• Never adjust the driver’s seat while the vehicle is in motion as
the driver may lose control of the vehicle and cause an accident.
Adjust the driver’s seat only when the vehicle is stopped.
• Always make certain the seats and seat backs are locked
securely in position. Verify the seat adjustment levers return to
their original position. A seat that is not locked into position will
promote injury in the event of an accident.
• Do not modify the vehicle seats in any way. The seats are
designed for comfort and support while driving as well as safety
in the event of an accident. Modifying the seats may reduce
their effectiveness in a collision.

Do not drive the vehicle with the head restraints removed. The head
restraints are designed to provide protection from neck injuries in the
event of a collision. Driving without the head restraints installed or
adjusted improperly increases the risk of serious injury or death in an
accident.

• Seat belts greatly reduce the chances of severe injury or death if
an accident should occur. While operating the vehicle, the driver
and all passengers should wear seat belts at all times.
• When wearing the seat belt, sit upright, back into the seat, and
then adjust the belt properly for a snug fit. Improperly adjusted
seat belts will increase the risk of injury or death in the event of
an accident.
• The maximum number of people the vehicle can transport is
five (5), as there are only enough seat belts for five passengers.
Never transport more than five people in the vehicle at one time.
• Do not allow infants or small children to sit in the front seats of
the vehicle. Children and infants should be seated in the rear
seat of the vehicle.

To use the remote release lever, 2, to unlock the trunk, open the driver’s door and
locate the lever to open the trunk. The lever is located in the vehicle interior,
between the driver’s seat and door. Pull up on the lever with the vehicle trunk
symbol to release the trunk lock.

Once the trunk is unlocked, lift the door, using the recess located at the center
of the trunk to access the rear of the vehicle. The trunk will automatically lock
when closed.

Gear Shift Lever
The Indigo is equipped with five-speed manual transmission with one reverse
gear. The gear shift lever is located on the center console between the driver and 2 4 R
passenger seats. The gear shift lever is embossed with the gear pattern. When
the gear shift lever is not engaged in a forward or reverse gear; the transmission
is in the neutral position.

Fuel Gauge Tachometer/RPM Meter TIOM00049
The fuel gauge is located within the tachometer gauge face. The fuel gauge
provides the driver with the approximate amount of diesel fuel remaining in the
vehicle’s tank.
The fuel tank capacity of the Indigo is 42 liters. When the fuel remaining in the
tank drops below approximately 8 liters, the gauge needle will enter the red area 0 60
the low fuel indicator, 2, will illuminate to alert the driver to refuel as soon as
possible.
NOTE
• For better vehicle operation, Tata Motors recommends not to let

the fuel level drop below a quarter of a tank.
• The fuel gauge is dampened. After starting the engine, wait 2

LCD Information Display
The instrument cluster houses a two line LCD (Liquid 20 Crystal Display) 160
information display that operates whenever the vehicle ignition switch is in
the “IGNITION” position. The LCD provides the driver with an odometer

displaying overall kilometers travelled, two separate tripmeters, and control 180 0 1
buttons to adjust the instrument cluster illumination.

The odometer, 1, is the upper line of the LCD display and records the overall
kilometers the vehicle has been driven. The odometer reading cannot be reset.

Tripmeter
The tripmeter portion, 2, of the display is located below the odometer. The LCD Information Display TIOM00047
display has two tripmeters, “A” and “B”. Pressing the “MODE” button, 3 on the
right side of the display will cycle between tripmeters and the cluster illumination
intensity setting. To reset the tripmeter, select “A” or “B” then press and hold
the “SET” button, 4, for several seconds until the display resets.
Illumination Intensity
To adjust the intensity setting of the instrument cluster illumination, press the
“MODE” button, 3, until the intensity meter is displayed on the lower line of
the LCD. Press the “SET” button, 4, to change the illumination intensity. The
more bars, 5, displayed on the LCD, the brighter the illumination will be for the

If one of the turn signal indicators flashes rapidly or does not blink,
one of the turn signal bulbs may be burnt out or a malfunction of the
turn signal indicator electrical system may exist. Have the defective
bulb or malfunction repaired immediately.
Position/Parking Lamp Indicator (Green) - Illuminates when the switch
on the light stalk is in the position/parking or head lamp position OFF
High Beam Indicator (Blue) - Illuminates when the light stalk on the
combination switch is in the high beam position.
Front Fog Lamp Indicator (Green) - Illuminates when the front fog
lamps are activated (as equipped).
Rear Fog Lamp Indicator (Amber) - Illuminates when the rear fog lamp

The wiper ON/OFF control has several modes of operation to compensate for
the amount of rain or snow contacting the windshield. The following paragraphs
describe the modes of operation for the windshield wipers:

• Air conditioning system operation decreases vehicle fuel efficiency.
• The compressor cycles on and off automatically to maintain

Fresh Air - When the switch is in “Fresh Air” mode, the HVAC system draws air 4
from outside the vehicle and into the vehicle cabin. The indicator on the switch
will be off. This allows the air inside the vehicle cabin to be fresh.
Recirculation - When the switch is in “Recirculation” mode, the HVAC system
circulates the inside the vehicle cabin. Recirculation mode is useful when:
• Driving through dusty conditions
• To avoid breathing polluted air

Manually controlled outer rear view mirrors are equipped with a small adjusting
knob, 1, to adjust the angle of the mirror. Adjust the angle of the side view
mirrors prior to driving the vehicle.
Power Control (If Equipped)
The angle of power outer rear view mirrors is controlled by a switch, 2, located
on the dash panel, to the right of the steering wheel. Adjust the angle by selecting
the desired mirror (left or right) with the center switch and then using the four-
way directional control to adjust the mirror to the correct angle. Adjust the angle

Always replace the cap on the accessory power socket when not in
use, otherwise the socket may be exposed to foreign materials.
A 12 volt DC accessory power socket, 1, is located in the center console, below the
HVAC system control panel. The accessory power socket can be used to power 1

items such as mobile phone chargers, small air compressors, utility lights, etc. up
to a maximum load of 10 amps. The accessory power socket is connected to the
battery power supply at all times.
Clock
A digital or analog (as equipped) clock is located in the center of the dash panel.
The clock is powered by the vehicle electrical system at all times to keep the 1 Analog

Mobile Phones

vehicle. Using a mobile phone while driving diverts the operator’s attention
from driving responsibilities, increasing the risk of causing an accident.
Driver Fatigue - ‘Rest, Revive, Survive’
Do not attempt to drive while feeling tired or sleepy. Long drives will cause
fatigue, increasing reflex reaction time and affecting judgement. Switch drivers
and/or take a ten minute break from driving every two hours or less.

Stopping the Engine FACING

for at least thirty (30) seconds before moving the ignition switch to the “OFF”
or “LOCK” position. This allows the compressor wheel in the turbocharger to

Increase the distance behind the vehicle in front to allow adequate
stopping distance.
• Avoid Hard Braking, Excessive Speed, and Sharp Turns - Braking
hard or travelling at high rates of speed, and sharp corners increases
the chances of losing control of the vehicle. Slow down and drive
smoothly.

4. Locate the bonnet prop rod, 3, and place the end of the rod in the
appropriate hole in the passenger side of the bonnet. Make sure the
bonnet is secured before releasing the weight of the bonnet.

• Do not press on the bonnet to close. This may dent the bonnet.
• Make certain the bonnet is locked and secure prior to driving.
Use the following steps to close the bonnet: 3
1. Lift the bonnet slightly and disengage the prop rod from the bonnet.
Replace the prop rod into the securing clip.
2. Lower the bonnet to approximately 15 - 20 centimeters above the closed
position and allow the bonnet to drop.
3. Pull up lightly on the bonnet to ensure the bonnet locked properly. 2

Always remember to switch the engine compartment lamp “OFF”
when finished. Leaving the engine compartment lamp illuminated will
drain the battery voltage.

Fuel Cap
The fuel cap is located on the left rear quarter of the car. The cap is accessed by
pulling the fuel door release lever located between the driver’s door and seat. To

replace the cap and rotate clockwise until hearing two or three ‘clicks’.

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface. Stop the engine and wait two to three
minutes before checking the oil level.
2. Raise the bonnet.
3. Pull the engine oil dipstick, 1, from the dipstick tube and wipe clean with

• Changing the engine oil and filter requires access to the
underside of the vehicle. Use a hoist or a changing pit to change
the engine oil and filter.
• To preserve the environment, recycle used oil at appropriate outlets.

5 Use the following procedure to change the engine oil and filter:
! WARNING
Engine oil will be hot! Contact with hot engine oil will cause burns.
Use care when handling hot engine oil.
1. Run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached.
2. Stop the engine, apply the parking brake, and open the bonnet.
3. Remove the engine oil fill cap.
4. From underneath the vehicle, remove the oil sump pan drain plug and
drain the oil in a suitable container for disposal.
5. Wipe the sump drain plug clean and apply MAXIFIX sealant or equivalent
to the drain plug.
6. Re-install the drain plug in the oil sump pan with a new sealing gasket.
Tighten the drain plug to 34 Nm.

• Do not over-tighten the engine oil filter, otherwise damage to the
filter or filter block may occur.
• Use only a designated filter wrench to tighten the engine oil filter,

10. Remove the oil filler cap, 2, from the engine valve cover and add 5.5
litres of fresh oil to the engine. Clean up any spilled oil and replace the 2
fill cap.

11. Start the engine and observe the oil pressure indicator light on the
instrument cluster. Stop the engine if the light does not go out a few
seconds after starting the vehicle.
12. Allow the engine to run for two to three minutes and then stop. Max

Change the brake fluid every 40,000 km or 2 years, whichever comes first.

Corrosion 1
If corrosion (white or greenish powder) is present on the battery terminals, use
the following procedure to clean them:
1. Wear a protective faceshield, gloves and clothing.
2. Disconnect the negative (-) and then positive (+) leads, 1, from the battery
using a wrench.
3. Coat the terminals with a solution of water and baking soda or commercially

4. When the bubbling stops (the powder will turn brownish), clean the
terminals with fresh water.
5. Brush the terminals with a wire brush.
6. Coat the terminals with petroleum jelly to prevent further corrosion. Do

7. Re-install the battery cables, positive cable first, then the negative (-) cable.
Adding Water
Check the battery electrolyte level against the ‘MIN’ (minimum) mark, 1, on
the front of the battery case. If the battery electrolyte is below the ‘MIN’ mark,
carefully use a coin (do not use a screwdriver) to remove the caps, 2, on the
battery top and add distilled water until the fluid level is at the bottom of the caps. 2
Use distilled water only. Do not fill with electrolyte, tap water, or any other fluid.
! WARNING

To reduce exhaust pollution, the vehicle is fitted with exhaust gas recirculation
(EGR) system. The continuously variable EGR valve is controlled by ECU. A
controlled amount of exhaust gas is mixed with intake air, in part load and part 2

Check the air pressure in the tyres at regular intervals of once per week. In
addition to safety, maintaining correct tyre pressure will increase the life of the
tyre, provide better fuel economy, and ride comfort. When checking air pressure

tread and sidewall as well.
NOTE
Always check the pressure when the tyres are cold. When the tyre is
warm, the pressure inside the tyre is increased, giving false pressure
readings. The recommended tyre pressure and size is located on the decal, 1

! CAUTION
Never replace an open (blown) fuse with a higher-amperage fuse!
Always replace fuses with the recommended amperage. Damage to
the vehicle electrical system or fire will result.
Fuses and relays are utilized to protect the vehicle electrical wiring and electrical
components from damage in the case of overload or short-circuit conditions.
There are fuse panel locations in the vehicle; they are located under the hood,
under the driver’s side of the dash panel, and under the front passenger’s seat
(when equipped with power windows).
Check fuses first whenever an electrical component in the vehicle stops
functioning. To check the fuse, use the following procedure: 5
1. Remove the cover from the fuse box.
2. Using the fuse panel cover, locate the fuse for the component not
functioning.
3. Remove the fuse from the fuse panel and inspect. Replace fuses where
the elements are open (blown) with a fuse of the same amperage rating.
NOTE
Spare fuses are located in the underdash fuse panel box. Always
replace spare fuses when used.
4. Push the fuse firmly into the correct location on the fuse panel.
5. Check that all other fuses and relays are installed properly. Replace the
fuse panel cover.
6. If the fuse blows again, a problem with the circuit wiring or component
likely exists. Take the vehicle an authorised service outlet for repair.

connected jumper leads or allowing the positive (+) and negative (-)

batteries when attempting to jump start a vehicle.
Use the following procedure to jumper start a vehicle with a discharged battery:
1. Read this procedure entirely before attempting jumper starting a vehicle.

Use the following procedure to change a tyre:
1. Switch on the hazard warning signals. Pull off to the side of the road,

3. Have all occupants exit the vehicle. Place chocks at the wheel diagonal

4. Remove and set up the advance warning triangle located in the vehicle’s
trunk/boot. Instructions for setting up the advanced warning triangle are
detailed in this section of the manual.
5. Lift the carpet in the trunk to access the scissor jack, handle, and spare
tyre.
6. Remove the jack and handle from the trunk.
7. Remove the spare tyre from the trunk. Place the tyre near the tyre to be
changed.
8. If the wheel is equipped with a wheel cover, use the straight-blade
screwdriver (in the tool kit) to carefully pry the wheel cover off the wheel.
