1. Introduction:

Electricity must be used in an efficient way. Manual meter reading and generation of the
power usage bill is subjected to errors. There may be a chance of not reading the meter value
properly, that leads to wrong bill generation. This may cause the electric bill to be very
expensive. Until the monthly electricity bill is generated consumer will be unaware of the
power usage. It also consumes lots of time to pay the bills. The conventional
electromechanical meters are replaced by new electronic meters to improve accuracy in meter
readings. Therefore attempts are being made to automate the billing system. So we have
proposed our project to develop a Smart Prepaid Energy Meter based on IoT.

2. Aim & Objectives:

To develop a Smart prepaid Energy Meter –using IoT.

 To track the power consumed using IoT

 To design a unit, this disconnects the electricity supply when the balance is exhausted.

 Anytime recharge using IoT.

3. Justification of the Project:

This project leads to efficient use of electricity since the usage of electricity can be
monitored. There will be no confusion in generation of the bill since it is precharged and
power usage can be monitored on request. Consumer will be aware of power balance and also
get an intimation to recharge when the available balance is less. So the consumer need not to
worry about the bill and payment of the bill. If the consumer is unable to recharge the
electricity supply will be disconnected automatically. It reduces man power to go to the
consumer place to generate the bill.

5. Proposed Methodology:
Our project is about to minimize the error by introducing a new system of Prepaid Energy
Metering using IoT (Internet of Things). IoT is a system of interrelated computing devices.
The present system power usage reading is made manually by moving to the consumer
locations. Manual billing is sometimes restricted and delayed due to bad weather conditions.
This requires large number of labor operators and long working hours to accomplish the task.
The printed billing also has the tendency of getting lost.

Smart Prepaid Energy Meter has been proposed as an innovative solution aimed at facilitating
affordability. This mechanism, essentially, requires the users to pay for the electricity before
its consumption. In this way, consumers hold credit and then use the electricity until the
balance is exhausted. If the available credit is exhausted then the electricity supply is cut-off
by a relay. This will enable the user to recharge his/her electricity account from home. The
block diagram is as shown in fig 1.
Consumer end:

Fig 1a: Block Diagram of Prepaid Energy Meter Consumer End

Server end:

Fig 1a: Block Diagram of Prepaid Energy Meter Server End

The components used are Node microcontroller unit, Relay, Load, Energy meter, LCD
display. Energy meter is a device which continuously measures the amount of current and
voltage used and gives energy used in Kilo Watt Hour. IoT (Internet of Things) is a system of
interrelated computing devices. The basic simplified workflow of Internet of things (IoT) can
be described as object sensing, identification and communication of Object specific
information, trigger an action and then, the smart device or system provides its service.

Flowchart:
The working of the system is shown in the following flow chart

It has two units-Server end and the Consumer end. At the server end Node MCU
microcontroller is used which has inbuilt Wifi module. It keeps track of power consumed
with respect to the Node MCU in the consumer end which is intern connected to the Energy
meter. The time to time data is stored and it is also updated in the cloud. And the data can be
accessed by the consumer through E-mail.
At the server the Node MCU which is programmed such that the counter keeps on decreasing
with the amount of energy used. We also make use of a relay which is a switching device. As
the power supply is given to the Energy meter, it starts reading the amount of energy usage
and the counter keeps on decreasing in the microcontroller. The energy usage is also stored
and updated in the cloud. The Microcontroller at the server end is programmed such that once
the energy consumption reaches 80% it sends an alert message to the consumer that the
balance has reached 80%, and then consumer can get the information such as, Amount of
recharge, Remaining balance, Summary by sending an E-mail by using a mail ID. Once the
balance has reached zero the microcontroller de -energizes the relay and the power is cut-off.

6. Expected Outcomes of the Project:

We will be able to develop a smart prepaid energy meter, that will be able to track the power
consumed using IoT. Power usage can be accessed via email. Consumer can get an alert
email which indicates the low balance. This unit will be able to get disconnected when the
balance is exhausted. It also provides anytime recharge using IoT.
