THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
In every school institutions, oral recitation is always included in every meeting either
impromptu or not. Oral recitation is included in a grading system under performance that is
having a very high percentage. Oral recitation defined as the process of accessing a person’s
oral presentation style and their ability to support their arguments/opinions effectively through
the use of spoken communication and often used as a tool for testing the knowledge of
students in a way that allows assessors to prove and scrutinize students (Joughin,1998).
On this study, G-10 perception on oral recitation as highlighted and focused topic,
this would help the researcher gather information from the every side of students on how they
develop their speaking and communication skills through oral recitation
Oral recitation has a big impact in students’ performance in school, if a student
misses an oral recitation then there is a big possibility that they will get lower score. Oral
recitation is just one method of helping students memorize information. This practice set
information in the brain and helps students absorb and retain information, upon which
understanding and critical thought is based. (Interventioncenter.org)

Every day in schools, there are times when you want to know more about
something. It may be about how a plant grows, or how a mathematical equation can be solved.
Individuals may want a certain fact about Albert Einstein, earth, the invention of light or
examples to surpass the oral recitation in school. Information with comprehension is important
to boost our confidence to stood and answer the question. Yes, oral recitation is nerve
wrecking but it simply guides us to comprehend the knowledge we learn as the process of
recalling.
This study talks about the “Perception of Grade 10 students on oral recitation” it deals on
how grade 10 students react and set oral recitation as effective strategy used by teachers in
order to enhance and improve speaking skills that would give a highest development through
reasoning and giving out opinions.

Background of the Study
Oral recitation is the practice of having the entire class recite important facts,
identifications, definitions and procedures within the instruction and later when they need to be
revisited. Oral recitation is a communication skill that are vital to student academic success
and future career prospects Oral recitation is the best way to ensure a student truly knows the
material.
Oral Recitation develops good public speaking skills since oral recitation is a public event.
It builds student motivation and interest by having them participate along with the teacher in
repeated public event. The practice of having oral recitation keeps students engaged in
learning, helps them verbalize their knowledge and suggest that if the information being
presented is important enough for the entire class to recite, it is worth remembering.
Recitation is traditionally how students were tested. In earlier times, the primary form of
examination was by oral recitation. A student stood before a teacher or panel of teachers and
was asked to give oral explanations on a variety of questions in multiple subjects. These oral
evaluations were considered a key to academic progress. Additionally, much popular
entertainment consisted of animated recitations of favourite stories or poems. Winston
Churchill was famous for having recited all 70 stanzas of the Lord Macauley’s “Horatius at the
Bridge.”
Most students find it challenging when asked to present orally. Students often encounter
difficulties such as lack of proficiency in using the English language correctly as well as lack of
confidence when speaking in front of an audience. Some students are afraid of criticism and
making mistakes. Students who are afraid of oral recitation have low self-esteem and
confidence.
Statement of the Problem
The objective of this study is to investigate the perception of grade 10 students on

oral recitation. SY 2020-2021. Specifically in sought to answer the following questions:
Research Question:
1. How do students view oral recitation?
2. What are the experiences of students regarding oral recitation?
Significance of the study
The study of student’s perception in oral recitation can be a learning strategy in the
secondary level especially in Grade 10 to enhance student’s understanding on oral recitation in
boosting their knowledge and confidence to speak in front as well. The researcher imbued to
help Grade 10 student’s improve academics competence and develop its confidence as a way
to share their own perception and opinion.

This study will help the following:
Student
The findings of the study will help students view oral recitation in the positive side. As oral
recitation tests the knowledge adhere in every lesson. On indication that teaching strategy is
effective and help boost ones confidence in standing in front.
Teachers
The finding of this study will help teachers to examine ones capability in critical thinking
and reasoning in terms of oral recitation. It is also to anticipate the views and opinion of
students of oral recitation that is always include in every days meeting.
Parents
It will help the parents to be aware on their children’s participation in oral recitation either
they have good perception or doesn’t like oral recitation. And also to be aware on the
development their children’s academic performance and what aspires them to participate in
class.
Researcher
The finding will help researcher to find out the view of student’s on oral recitation. This will
help the researcher to gain more information about how student’s feel and perceive critical
thinking and giving of opinions in front of the crowd. Also to identify how oral recitation affects
student’s performance in school.

Scope and Limitation
The main purpose of this study is to grasp about G-10 students perceptions in oral
recitation and to identify its dependent variables such as lack of self- esteem, lack of
comprehension, and fear of criticism. The student’s personal information, are their age,
gender, and strand. The researcher limited the survey questionnaire to 10 respondents, to G-
10 students, in Gingoog City Colleges. Each of the respondents was given a questionnaire to
answer. In order to have an accurate result based on the data collected. The researcher
conducted a closed-ended question with a choices strongly agree, strongly disagree, agree
and undecided. The researcher did not include open- ended question. But the researcher
include additional interview question, for classifications and to have an accurate findings or
result. Also for those who are willing to share their experienced. Open- ended questions were
used in the interview to have a better result.
