The IPA used for allophonic or phonemic transcription
The IPA is used more frequently (Pekacar & Dilek,
2008) to show articulation in symbols
International Phonetic Association (1999) aims to
create a ‘consistent way of representing’ spoken
language
There are many symbols
Some are newly created and some obsolete
Problems with the IPA
Not accepted everywhere (e.g. The USA)
Enormous number of symbols
Difficulty of typing/finding symbols on keyboards
Difficulty of printing (loss of information due to out-
of-date printing software)
Cannot show all articulations within a language (e.g.
/θ/ by the English word thief is not valid for dialects which
pronounce the ‘th’ as a labiodental fricative /f/ or a dental
stop /t̪/)
Advantage of the IPA
The IPA chart is free to copy (many hardcopies, interactive
audio-visual resources)
Many learners are already familiar with the IPA (from
English coursebooks and the Latin alphabet)
Shows stress patterns within a word

A phonetic alphabet with selected symbols adopted
About 700 words transcribed into the IPA
While 38 of the symbols overlap with the IPA symbols,
only four of the symbols differ from widely used IPA
symbols which are /ɟ/ for ‘g’ as in ‘güzel’, but not
‘gazete’; /ɣ/ for ‘ğ’ as in ‘doğa’; /ɫ/ as in ‘lale’ but not
‘kalın’, /ʊ̈/ as in ‘üzüm’.
These symbols are also among widely accepted types
adopted by different sources.
/θ/ and /ð/ symbols were not used as they do not have
any corresponding sounds in Turkish.
Each word is transcribed in such a way that learners of TFL
are able to see each syllable split from eachother by (.) sign.
Another conducive aspect of the transcribed list is that
these learners can see the stress pattern in the words with
(') symbol.
e.g.:
/'ʌ.dʒʌ.ba:/ for ‘acaba’
The (-) sign shows that the word is the root of a verb.
e.g.:
/ce'sɪl-/ for ‘kesil-’
Needs developing by:
Adding more words
Adding more levels
Adding more features such as writing the parts of
speech of each word
Adding more articulative options for words if needed
For both native learners and TFLs
Useful for:
The symbols are TFL and ELT learners at the same
time
3.3. The List of A1-A2 Turkish Words in the IPA Format
There are examples from over 700 words in three columns in the list below. The IPA transcription
of the words can be seen on their left. They are ordered alphabetically. The (-) sign shows that the
word is the root of a verb.
