At the time of writing this we are back to level two with Auckland locked off from the rest of the
country, events cancelled again and restricted use of our clubrooms. The uncertainty of what is
happening has a serious effect on everyone in their day to day life and this has a role on effect down
to our club and our hobby. A lot of planning is on the backfoot and things rapidly change. I have just
had my sixth event that I have entered, cancelled. Many entrants are not happy at no refunds but
many events are run as a business and they have already paid out organisational and planning costs
and do not have the financial ability to repay entry fees. I found that during the lockdown my walking
was something to get me out of the house and a focus. I also did a few virtual events. Once we moved
out of lockdown then training for the events kept me keen but after doing the training and not the
events it is very hard to remain motivated. On a positive note the easing up for a few weeks did see
some events held and a few did the Taupo events and more were doing parkrun and there was enough
of those held for Lex to complete his 250th, Denyse her 150th and Keith his 50th. Dennis also did his
254th marathon and awaiting the next few weeks to see if his next marathons he has entered will be
run.
Garmin
After all the issues with Covid and cancelled events etc who would have thought that the biggest
problem of the year for many runners and walkers would be the inability to connect their Garmin
watches to the Ap for a week due to Garmin being infected by ransomware and being asked to pay a
supposed $10million to have it removed. It shows how dependent we have all become on the use of
electronics. When I and many others were young to work out how far and fast you went was just an
estimation. You knew roughly what your average pace was and worked out how long you went out. A
drive round your favourite courses in the car more or less confirmed the distance. Events were all
done on a single start time which was when the gun went off and in bigger events like Rotorua
Marathon it meant that the ones at the back were up to five minutes before even crossing the start
line. People used to work out what time they should take to get to certain distances and maybe use a
watch or stop watch to confirm it. Some used to write these split times on their hands so they
remembered what it was. Now you can tell at any given time distance, pace, time. We do become so
dependent on those watches. Maybe we need to have a couple events where estimated times are put
in prior to start and no watches, phones etc are used. Other clubs do this and results can be interesting.
Denis Jordan
Some of you may have been at the meeting earlier this month, where we heard that one of the newer
club members, Dennis Jordan, had completed the Taupo Marathon on 2 nd August. What you may not
have appreciated is that this marathon was the 254th Dennis has completed, and that he is a long-
standing members (since 2006) of the New Zealand 100 Marathon Club. The New Zealand leader
board for the most marathons completed is led by Michael Stewart, and “mad Mike” has his sights set
of a thousand. If you’re interested in either a steady 100 marathons or challenging Michael Stewart’s
total, now is the time to start.
Denis started in 1983 at the New Plymouth Marathon and reached the 100 totals at the popular Aurora
marathon just north of Wellington. He has run Rotorua many times, but none more memorable than
in 1989 when there were 6000 runners in the field. In 1988 he had broken the barrier set for club
runners, the 3 hours marathon; Denis ran 2:59 at Havelock North.
Denis has moved to Hamilton from New Plymouth and is becoming a regular member of the race-
walking group. He knows a lot about runners and running, and is always ready to compare running
notes, talk about the great courses and the memorable events of marathon running. He is not just a
slog-it-out runner and walker; he has also been doing the park runs at the Hamilton Lake.
Club Website
We had two websites running and are in process of sorting out and removal of the paid site. Neal is
looking after the original sits and it is up to date and will be the one to use. The address is included
on our public facebook page. For those who do not know or have not been into the site, the details
are:

Club 10km Results
( Note: due to Covid causing date changes or several people being tied up with running the event ,they did the
event on practice day under timed conditions.).
Some on the list are not current financial members, so for the 15k you will need to be financial and
wear club uniform to continue. To be in contention for the club championship you must do the half
marathon and at least two of the other events. Points will accumulate with the half marathon and
your two best other results. There are some who will not be doing the half marathon either due to
age restriction (Must be 16) or it is too long to do. If you do three events you will be eligible for a club
medal this year but will not be included in the championship.
Thanks to all those who assisted at the first two events
