table.
5. Draw Lewis dot diagrams and Bohr diagrams for the first 20 elements & their ions.
6. State and explain periodic trends: atomic radius, ionization energy, electron affinity, electronegativity and reactivity.
7. Classify substances as ionic or covalent according to their properties, as well as using electronegativity values.
8. Draw the Lewis dot diagrams, Lewis structures and Molecular shapes of ionic and covalent substances.
9. Draw bond dipoles and molecular (net) dipoles and to classify substances as polar or nonpolar.
10. Explain properties of substances using concepts of intermolecular forces, intramolecular forces & metallic bonds.
11. Nomenclature: Write chemical formulas of substances given the chemical name and vice versa.
12. Classify/ write balanced chemical equations for chemical reactions: synthesis, decomposition, single/ double displacement,
combustion.
13. Write non-ionic, total ionic and net ionic chemical equations.

Unit II: Chemical Quantities

1. Round numbers to the correct number of significant digits.
2. Calculate average atomic mass and abundance of isotopes.
3. Use concepts of Avogadro’s constant and Molar mass to carry out calculations: moles  particles, moles  mass, mass 
particles.
4. Calculate percent composition, empirical formulas and molecular formulas of substances (including hydrates).
5. Solve stoichiometric problems to find mass/ moles/ particles of a substance given the mass/ moles/ particles of any other
substance involved in the chemical reaction.
6. Solve stoichiometric problems involving limiting reactants, theoretical yield and percentage yield.

Unit III: Solutions and Solubility

1. Interpret solubility curves and identify solutions as saturated, unsaturated or supersaturated.
2. List and explain factors affecting the rate of dissolving and the solubility of solids, liquids and gases.
3. Solve problems involving different concentration units: m/v %, m/m %, v/v %, ppm, ppb and molar concentration (mol/L).
4. Explain how to prepare solutions by dissolving a solid solute and then diluting a concentrated solution.
5. Calculations involving dilutions and mixing of solutions.
6. Solve stoichiometric problems involving solutions, including those involving limiting reactants
7. Describe and compare the Arrhenius and Bronsted-Lowry theories of acids and bases.
8. Write and identify conjugate acid-base pairs.
9. Calculate pH values given concentration of acids/ bases and vice versa.
10. Distinguish between strong, weak acids and bases in terms of degree of ionization/ dissociation as well as in terms of pH
values.
11. Perform calculations involving titrations and neutralization reactions (e.g. determine concentration of an acid by conducting
a titration).
12. Explain and describe the titration technique as well as the terms/ materials (e.g. indicators) associated with titrations.

Don’t Quit
When things go wrong as they sometimes will, when the road you’re trudging seems uphill, when the funds are low and the debts are high, and

you want to smile but you have to sigh, when care is pressing you down a bit, rest if you must but don’t you quit. Life is queer with its twists and

turns, as every one of us sometimes learns, and many a failure turns about, when you might have won had you stuck it out. Don’t give up, though

the pace seems slow- you may succeed with another blow. Success is failure turned inside out – the silver tint of the clouds of doubt. And you

never can tell how close you are; it may be near when it seems too far. So stick the fight when you’re hardest hit – it’s when things seem worst

that you must not quit. - Anonymous
