Statics – Set 3
Instruction: Present your solution in details.
Problems:
1. Knowing that the forces P and Q are equivalent to a single force R that passes through
point A, determine P and R.

2. The two forces can be replaced by an equivalent force R acting at point B on the beam.
Determine the distance b that locates B. (Hint: the combined moment of the two forces
about any point is equal to the moment of R about the same point.)

3. Given the T = 28.3 kN and W = 25 kN, determine the magniture and sense of the moments
about the point B of the following: (a) the force T; (b) the force W; and (c) forces T and W
combined.
4. Calculate the combined moment of the couple C and the force P about the axis AB. Use
C = 80 N-m and P = 400N.

5. A device called a rolamite is used in various ways to replace slipping motion with rolling
motion. If the belt, which wraps between the rollers, is subjected to a tension of 15N,
determine the reactive forces N of the top and bottom plates on the rollers so that the
resultant couple acting on the rollers is equal to zero.
