I. Introduction
IV. Discussion
Listen attentively as I read to you the story entitled “From Now
On.” Then, answer the questions that follow.
From Now On
by Cindy F. De Asis
One day, Jimmy went to school 2 very sleepy. While in class, he fell
asleep. When he woke up, his classmates and his teacher were gone. He
was alone. But there were a lot of things scattered everywhere: piles of
books, pencils and crayons, crumpled papers, and even wrappers of
candies and snacks. The chairs and tables were also a mess.
Jimmy was confused at first, but decided to go home. But before
he could go outside the room, a voice stopped him.
“Where are you going?” said the voice.
Jimmy turned his head and saw the chair talking. Before he could react,
another voice got his attention.
“Are you not going to clean us?” said the pencil.
“Are you going to leave us like this?” said the crayon.
One by one, the objects approached him, asking him to put them in
proper place. Even the blackboard asked to be cleaned. Jimmy was
afraid and started to cry.
“Please, don’t hurt me. From now on, I promise I will clean all of
the mess in this classroom. Please, leave me now,” cried Jimmy.
“Jimmy! Wake up! Our class is already finished,” he heard another
voice calling him.
He opened his eyes and found himself in their classroom. His
teacher and classmates were there. There were no mess, no talking
objects, and no shouting blackboard.
Flooded with relief, he stood up and grabbed a broom. He started
to sweep the crumpled papers, arranged the books and chairs, and erased
the writings on the board. 3
“Wow, Jimmy! We are so happy that you are here,” his classmate
said to him.
“Me, too. I know how difficult it is to clean a lot of mess. From
now on, I will help you and our group in cleaning our classroom,” said
Jimmy.
They smiled with each other and continued cleaning.
Comprehension Check:
In the story you have listened to, there are some events which can
be considered real and made-up.
For example, when Jimmy was very excited to go home to play his
video game and watch his favorite TV show, this expresses reality
because the feeling of excitement really happens to everyone. It is an
action that actually happened in the past.
While the part of the story when the objects like pencil, and crayon
approached him to put them in proper place is an example of made-up
event or detail because it is just a fantasy which is too far from reality.
Going back to Item Numbers 4 and 5, you are right if your answers
are B and A respectively. The pencil and the crayon are not human
beings, so they could not really talk. This is an example of fantasy or
made-up. While sleeping performed by Jimmy took place in the past
which also happens to someone is an example of reality.

Roy started to do his assignments. After a minute, he said,
“Oh no! It is time for my favorite TV show.”
As he stood up, his book called him.
“Roy, my friend, you should finish your assignment first. You
need to study before doing what you want.” “That’s right. Studying
hard will help you achieve your dreams,” his pencil said.
“And it will make your parents proud, too,” his book added.
