Art Appreciation Module 2
1. Assumptions of Arts
ART IS UNIVERSAL
Art is a universal phenomenon and is as old as human being. Every society has its own art, which
is encouraged and molded by the patronage it gets from its members. Artists as members of
society create such works of art in accordance with the existing relations in the society.
ART IS CULTURE
Art influences society by changing opinions, instilling values and translating experiences across
space and time. ... Art in this sense is communication; it allows people from
different cultures and different times to communicate with each other via images, sounds and
stories. Art is often a vehicle for social change.
Art, then, is not merely the process by the artist; it involves both the artist and the active observer
who encounter each other, their mental environments, and their culture at large. That is, art is not
just a recording of human experience, but it is an involvement of human experience.
