Basic Assumptions,
Functions, and Nature of
Art Appreciation
INTRODUCTION

Every man has an assumption about everything that

surrounds him/her. Unending questions and wild
curiosity drives a person to examine and look into the
real meaning of a certain thing. What do these things
mean and what are their functions that could benefit
man? What is the real meaning of the world and
assumptions that surrounds it? Do they really meant
for humans?

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

A. Clarify the different basic assumptions about art ;
B. Characterize the different assumptions and functions of art;
C. Explain the importance of different functions of the art around us.

at all times, in all countries and it
lives because it is well-liked and
enjoyed.
❑ Art involves experience; there can
never be appreciation of art without
experience.
❑ Art is everywhere.
❑Art is man oldest mean of
expression.

❑Art as an expression and

communication.
NATURE OF ART
The essential nature of art is meant to
portray the daily lives of the people in
that culture. It shows what the people
think is important, beautiful, and valid.
It expresses the emotions that the
artists feel, and it provides decoration
through his medium.
Here are some facts about art:

Art is universal- arts regardless of origin, time, and

place are liked and enjoyed by people continuously.
Art is not nature- art is made by man, whereas
nature is given around us.
Art involves experience- “all arts depend on
experience, and if one is to know art, he must know
it not as fact or information but as experience”
Here are some facts about art:
❖ Art is cultural- the sensitivity
and imagination of an artist is
what can make a culture.
❖ Art is an expression of the mind
❖ Art is a form of creativity
FUNCTIONS
OF ART
Personal Function
Arts are vehicles for the artists' expression of their
feelings and ideas. The arts also serve as means of
expression for us. Satisfying individual needs for
personal expression.

forms, textures, etc. in our environment.

Social Functions

Arts could be social needs for display, celebration

and communication. One cannot conceive of a

that has a physical function usually relates to items that can
be used for a practical purpose because of their physical
structure, despite their artistic appeal.

The need for beauty in functional objects for everyday use

(Form and function: the function of an object generally
determines the basic form that it takes).

primarily by its operational function.
