LESSON PLAN

TEXTBOOK: Upstream Proficiency

UNIT: The science of life

LESSON: Anger is heat

TIME: 50 min.

LESSON AIMS:

 to develop fluency in speaking


 to promote a collaborative attitude
 to stimulate creativity

OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

Cognitive objectives:
 use appropriate discourse language
 employ grammar topics taught previously;
 exchange information using grammar and vocabulary related to anger
 exchange information and express personal opinions on the topic of the lesson

Affective objectives
●to create a warm atmosphere;
●to help students enjoy the topic of the lesson
●To get students intersted in the topic

STAGES:
Activity 1: Warm-up (10 min)

Timing : 10 minutes
Technique: brainstorming ,
Aim: to brainstorm ideas

Negative and Positive


T prepares a set of blank cards. T invites the class to shout out a number of
“negative” things associated with this time of year e.g. “I usually get the flu” or “It’s dark in
the mornings”. Write each idea on a separate card. Then T hands out blank cards and
gets groups of learners to write more negative things. When every group has written a
few they pass their cards on to another group.
The new group should turn each card over and write a positive side for each piece of
bad news - for example on the card that says “I usually get flu” they could write “but
that’s good because I can watch TV all day in bed!” When they’re done pass the cards
around, read them and have a good laugh.

Activity 2: LEAD IN (10min)

Timing : 10 minutes
Technique: brainstorming ,
Aim: to brainstorm and introduce new lexis
Skills: S, W, L, R

T writes on the bb words related to expressing anger and elicits antonyms from Sts
blow a fuse hit the roof blow off steam go bananas Be cheesed off 
be  sick to the stomach
drive you up the wall, (keep calm, stay calm/cool, chill out, take your time)

T asks Sts to identify the topic of the lesson and writes the title on the bb. Anger management

Activity 3 : self evaluation and role play


Interaction: T-Sts, Sts -Sts
Timing : 10 minutes
Technique: decision making, acting out
Aim: to brainstorm ideas
Skills: S, W, L, R

T gives Sts handouts with the Anger Meter to rank their anger. Sts then compare their irritability in
pairs and share their results with the whole class.
T then asks Sts to come up in front of the classroom and act out one of the situations on their
handouts using some of the new lexis.
Sts perform the task and the most convincing couple is rewarded with a round of applauses.

Activity 5: Collaborative writing


Interaction: T-Sts, Sts –Sts, group work
Timing : 20 minutes
Technique: discussion, collaborative writing
Aim: to stimulate creativity in writing and develop self confidence of lower leveled Sts
Skills: S, W, L, R

T divides the class into teams of 6. One group is the jury while the other teams receive specific tasks to be
solved on a flipchart within a specific time frame The jury decides who has the best presentation.
