SECTION A (40 marks)
Section A is compulsory. You are requested to answer all questions.

Question 1 (15 marks)

Pacific Manufacturing Company manufactures bicycle tyres at a factory and it is expected to
average 13 minutes. Numerous observations for the time taken to manufacture tyres are
illustrated below. Based on the sample data given below, construct the appropriate control
charts. Do the results suggest that the process is in control? Why?

Question 2 (10 marks)

In a rope manufacturing factory in Fiji, coils of synthetic rope are scrutinized for defects.
Each coil contains 2000 feet of rope. Twenty rolls have been selected and the number of
defects per roll is presented below. Construct the appropriate control chart and determine the
chart's control limits. Does the process appear to be in control? Explain

Question 3 (15 marks)

Pacific Beverages, a large juice manufacturing company, bottles orange juice with 10 bottling
machines. A sample of 500 days yielded the following data:
Number of machine failures 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
No of days observed 50 75 25 100 50 75 50 25 50

(a) Based on the above data, construct the probability distribution of the random variable X
= the number of machine failures on a given day. Draw a graph of the distribution.
(b) Find the variance and standard deviation of X.
(c) What is the probability of at least 2 machine failures on any day?
(d) What is the probability of more than 4 machine failures on any given day?

2
SECTION B (60 marks)
Section B has eight questions. Answer any four questions. Each question is worth 15
marks.
