When Protestantism Follows The Beast

Turn with me to the book of Daniel, chapter 7. When it comes to

understanding prophecy, there must be a study that takes us beyond
a surface reading of the text, We've got to look beyond and behind
the Devil's facade and see his strategies. You see, the Bible says the
serpent was "more subtle than any beast of the field" [Genesis 3:1],
and what we've learned so far about the prophecy [Daniel 7;
Revelation 13] is obvious. God has revealed to us the moves that the
Devil plans to make on God's church. And He's revealed to us the
Devll's strategy so that we will not be caught unaware. Paul says,

'~.. we are not ignorant of his devices. " [2 Corinthians 2: 11]

And so God has revealed to us in the Scripture how the Devil would
work. We saw how the Devil would seek to kill the baby Jesus through
that dragon power. Remember, it was through pagan Rome that the
Devil first attacked Christ Himself, and later the Christian church. It
was the Roman emperors who fed the Christians to the lions. It was
the Roman Empire, that pagan Roman power, that sought to
obliterate the early Christian church. But you know, it didn't work,
did it? In fact, the Devil discovered that "the blood of the martyrs
was the seed of the saints." And so he changed his tactic. What was
the new plan? If you can't beat them, join them. That's It, That's why
the dragon resembles this beast [the first beast of Revelation 13].
Remember the beast had seven heads and ten horns [Revelation 13:1].
The dragon had seven heads and ten horns [Revelation 12:3]. And so
the Devil, who could not destroy the church from the outside, sought
to infiltrate. Now this is made clear in a number of other texts. For
instance, in Acts 20:29 Paul says,

"For I know this, that atter my departing grlevoIU wolves shall

enter In among you, not sparing the tlock. "

And they will teach pernicious doctrines [2 Peter 2:2]. Paul

understood that wolves would attempt to creep In. Now Jesus had
already said what these wolves would be like. You can read it in
Matthew 7: 15, where Jesus says there will come false prophets and
they'll be wolves "in sheep's clothing." Now the sheep is a symbol of

'Page ,.,
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

Christ, the Lamb of God [John 1:29). A sheep represents Christians

and Christianity. And yet the Bible says these false prophets would
come but they'd be wolves in sheep's clothing.

And so we see this infiltration taking place at a very early time in

church history. In fact, as you study 2 Thessalonians it becomes
obvious that Paul understood and predicted this happening. He says
in 2 Thessalonians 2:2 and 3,

"benot soon shaken In mind, or be troubled, not by spirit, or word,

nor by letter (U from us, as that day of Christ Is at hand..for that
day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and the
man of sin be revealed.•." [paraphrased]

Now, that word "sin" there is the word "lawlessness" in the Greek;
hamartia. So, he's the man of lawlessness. There will be a falling
away first, When would that falling away take place? Acts 20:29 says,

'~.. after my departing ..•"

After Paul died, there did come a falling away. And a man of
lawlessness was revealed. Now where was he to sit? Paul goes on to
say, in 2 Thessalonians 2:4, that he will set himself up

'~.. In the temple of God..•1/

And notice, this was not something that Paul expected to happen 2000
years in the future, not at all. Paul says, "after my departing" this is
going to take place [infiltration of wolves in sheep's clothing] in Acts
20:29. And right there in 2 Thessalonians 2:7 he says,

"Forthe mystery of Iniquity doth already work.••1/

It's already at work. It's already beginning, he says. In fact, 1 John

2: 18 and 19 makes it clear that not only was it beginning to happen
when Paul said that, and when Paul wrote that he knew that

'~..the mystery of Iniquity doth already work•••"

Page 5
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

but after Paul died, it happened exactly as Paul had predicted. Paul
was dead when John the Apostle was writing the first epistle of his
book. In 1 John 2:18 and 19, he specifically says,

'~•.06 ye have heard that antlchrist 6haU come, even now are there
many antlchrists ..• They went out (rom IU •••"

And so John makes it clear that already there had begun a "falling
away,· and that a counterfeit Christianity was arising that played with
and changed God's law. Remember, this man was called the "man of
lawlessness" because he would disregard God's law. In fact, one of
the first things that happened in that falltng away was that idolatry
came into the Christian church. That's why, in 1 John 5:21, the last
verse of this epistle, John closes his book with these words,

"Little children, keep yourselves (rom idols. /I

Well, how could idols have crept into God's church unless the
"mystery of iniquity," or the mystery of lawlessness, was already at
work? Just as Paul said. Yes, that "mystery of iniquity" was already
at work and that "man of lawlessness" would set himself up in the
temple of God. And in Acts 20:29 it says [this would happen], "among
you.·

We are the temple of God. Remember, in 1 Corinthians 3:16, Paul

says, [writing to the church in Corinth],

I~ •• ye are the temple o( God. ••n

In fact, for the Apostle Paul, there is not a building on earth that can
truly be considered the temple of God. Only the body of Jesus Christ
is, indeed, the temple of God. And further, he says in 1 Corinthians
3:16, our bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost.

And so, when we talk about the temple in the New Testament, we're
not talking about some literal building of bricks and mortar upon the
earth. No, no. We're talking about the community of believers; and
this "falling away" did indeed take place right in among Christians
and Chrtstlanity, In the so-called temple of God, the church, a ·,falling
away· took place; and a system arose right there, as God predicted it
would, in the very place that God predicted it would, at the very time

.Page 6
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

that God predicted it would, doing the very things that God predicted
it would. Ifyou missed messages 4 and 5 of this series, then friend,
you need to study these messages and understand who this beast of
Revelation 13 is.

We're talking about a time when Protestantism follows the beast Now
friends, the Bible says the whole world Is going to "wonder after the
beast" (Revelation 13:3]. There's no security in a church. There is
security only In Jesus Christ And friends, only as we have a saving
relationship with Jesus, only as we follow Jesus and His Word and His
commandments, can we be kept from the errors and deceptions and
traditions of the beast But the day will come when all the world will
be divided. Who will follow Christ? Who will follow the beast? I
don't know about you,but I have made up my mind tonight to follow
Jesus.

Now, as we look in Daniel 7, it's obvious that this "man of lawlessness,"

as Paul calls him, and this "mystery of lawlessness," as Paul puts it in
2 Thessalonians 2, involves the law of God. Notice right here in Daniel
7:25, one of the specific clues that Daniel gives in identifying this little
horn or this beast It says in Daniel 7:25,

''And he shaU speak great words against the most High, and shall
wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times
and laws•••"

Now, I want to stop right there and make one thing clear. We are
not talking about the ceremonial or Mosaic laws of the Old Testament
In fact, if you turn with me to Colossians 2:14, it reads,

"Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us,

which was contrary to us, and took It out of the way, nailing It to
his cross;"

Paul says that "the handwriting of ordinances that was against us,"
(and remember that word "against" us), Jesus took out of the way,
nailing them to His c,ross. So we're not talking about the Mosaic or
ceremonial laws. Now turn to Ephesians 2: 15 and notice this text,
again referring to what Jesus did at the cross. It says,

Page 7
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

..
"

"Having abolhhed In hi. fle.h the enmity, even the law of

commandments contained In ordinances•••"

Paul says that Jesus abolished the laws 'contained in ordinances."

And so you see, if Jesus abolished those ceremonial or Mosaic laws
at His cross, then it would be impossible for the beast to change
something that was already abolished. And when we read that the
beast, or little horn, would "think to change times and laws,' we know
that the laws we're talking about are not ceremonial or Mosaic laws.
We must be referring to the moral laws of God. And, of course, that's
what we've already learned, haven't we? The Bible says very clearly
in Exodus 20:4 and 5,

'Thou .halt not make unto thee any graven Image.••or bow down
thyself to them. •."

Now, that was not a law of Moses. That was a law of God that He
wrote with His own finger in stone. And yet the beast came along,
and in the teachings of this system, in the catechisms, etc., you will
find that commandment was left out, And it was in this way that
idolatry crept into Christianity. And we know that for thousands of
years, statues have crept into Christian churches and people have
bowed down to them.

Someone may say, 'Oh, yes, but we don't worship the statue. We just
honor il" Well, friends, what do you think the heathen did? Do you
think the heathen actually worshipped the rock? Did they think that
Zeus was stone? Did they think that the statues were the gods? No:
There was not a pagan or a heathen in the world who ever believed
that his statue was his god. He understood that the statue simply
represented his god. You see, the Greeks and the Romans believed
that the gods lived on Mount Olympus, didn't they? They believed
the gods lived on Mount Olympus; and yet they formed images
representing their gods, and they bowed down to them. And that's
exactly what God said His people were never to do. He says, "Thou
shalt not make unto thee any graven image ...or bow down thyself to
them."

Of course God does not want us bowing down to images. Now that's
what began happening, even at a very early time in Christianity,

Page.8
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

because we learn that John had to caution the early Christians after
Nthe falling away' had taken place.

1 John 5:21 says,

"Little children, keep yourselves from idols. H

And so, it's important that you realize the Devil's strategy here. What
is the Devil attempting to do? Well, let's look at how he worked in
the past, Turn with me to the book of Daniel, chapter 3. Remember,
this is how Satan got the church in trouble back then. And of course,
now I'm referring to the 'church in the wilderness,' as Stephen calls
it [Acts 1:44), the Jewish church of that time. Notice what it says in
Daniel3:l,

''Nebuchadnezzar the king made an Image of gold ..• /I

Isn't it interesting that back then the beast was Babylon?

Nebuchadnezzar was the man at the head of that beast system.
Remember, the first beast was a lion, and that lion represented
Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar was the man at the head of that
Babylonian beast system, and he made an image of the beast He
made an image of gold from the crown of its head to the sole of its
feet; and he made a law, friends. He passed a law that when the people
heard the music, when they heard the trumpets, everybody had to
bow. Everybody had to bow; a law was passed. But there were three
Hebrew boys who would not bow. They had broken the klng's law.
So what happened to them? They were cast into a fiery furnace. They
were to be killed because they would not bow to the image of the
beast Now does that sound familiar? Notice that here in Revelation
13:14 and 15 it says,

"And decelveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those
mirada which he had power to do In the sight of the beast; saying
to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an Image
to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. And
he had power to glce life unto the Image of the beast, that the image
of the beast should both speak, and cause that a. many as would
not worship the Image of the beast .hould be killed. /I

Page 9
lfhen Protestantism Follows the Beast

Don't you see, friends? The Devil is using the same strategy. And
what was his strategy? His strategy was to make a law that
contradicted God's law. Now turn to Daniel 6:4 and 5, and notice
what it says.

"Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against

Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion
nor fault; forasmuch as he was Ialthtul; neither was there any
error or fault found In him. Then said these men, We shaU not
find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find It against
him concerning the law of his God. H

. Notice what the Devil tried to do to get rid of Daniel. You see, in
these last days, friends, the Devil wants to get rid of Christians. He
wants to get rid of those who fear the Lord and especially is he going
to want to destroy that last generation who will be preaching the
gospel to the world just before Jesus comes [Matthew 24: 14]. He
wants to do away with them. Now how can he do it? Well, he's going
to use the same strategy he used in the past, He's going to make a
law that contradicts God's law. Now remember, on this occasion, the
Devil had the king make a law that no one could pray to any god
except the king. Now would Daniel bow down and pray to a man,
pray to a king? Would Daniel, in praying, worship and honor a man
above his Creator? Of course not, So Daniel refused to pray to the
king and instead continued praying to his God. And you know the
story. The law caused him to be cast into a den of lions. But friends,
God took care of him.

And so it will be in the last days. But notice that the Devil always
operates in the same way. He makes a law that contradicts God's law
and then he gets God's people in trouble. Now turn with me to Isaiah
24, verse I, and you'll see that it is very clear that in the end God is
upset with this world and this earth because it has attempted to
change His holy law. And not only have people attempted to change
it, but they have attempted to persecute the people of God, and they
will want to kill those who refuse to break God's law. Now notice
what he says in Isaiah 24:1 and 19. It is the end time.

'Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty~ and maketh it toaste,
and turneth It upside doum, and $cattereth abroad the inhabitants

Page 10
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

thereof. The earth Is utterly broken down, th~ earth /$ clean

dlssoloed, the earlh /$ mooed exceedingly. /I

This is the end of time and notice right In the context of this in verse
3,

"The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: (or the
LORD hath spoken this word. II

Now, why is this going to happen? Why is God upset with the
inhabitants of the earth? Notice what it says in verse 5,

"The earth also Is defiled under the Inhabltanu thereof; because

they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken
the eDerl(Utlngcotenant; /I

Notice, God is upset with the world because they have transgressed
the laws. Now, let me ask a question. What laws have they
transgressed? Here we're reading Isaiah 24, but it's talking about the
end of time, isn't it? It's talking about the time just before Jesus comes
and it says "they have transgressed the laws, changed" (notice that
word) "the ordinances, broken the everlasting covenant" Now, it's
obvious that if God is going to punish the earth at the end of time for
having broken His laws and changing the ordinance, this reference
does not refer to the laws of Moses. It can't be referring to the laws
of Moses because you can't break something that's been done away
with. And remember, we just read that the laws of Moses, the
ceremonial laws of ancient Israel, were nailed to the cross when Jesus
died (Colossians 2:14]. Surely God could not be upset with anybody
breaking laws that were "nailed to the cross" and done away with. So
there is only one understanding that can be maintained, and that is
that the law we're talking about here is God's moral law. And that's
what we see in the world today, don't we? People are murdering,
they're killing, they're lying, they're stealing, they're committing
adultery; and friends, those laws are moral, and it is those laws that
the beast has attempted to change.

So it's important that we understand that the Devil's strategy has

always been, and will always be, to counterfeit God's law - to change
the law and then persecute those who will not follow his changes.
Instead, those who refuse to be controlled by the Devil will obey God.

Page 11
J.VhenProtestantism Follows the Beast

And if they obey God then Satan will make things so hard that they
must be killed. That's what we read In Revelation 13. You see, the
time will come when the whole world will be forced by law to "worshlp
the beast and his image and receive his mark in his forehead or in his
hand- [Revelation 14:9). But those people who serve God rather than
man will refuse to do that [Acts 5:29). And because they refuse to
follow the changes that the beast has brought forth, because they
refuse to follow the law as it has been changed by the powers of the
earth, they will become Public Enemy Number One; just as Daniel
became Public Enemy Number One and just as those Hebrew boys,
who refused to bow to the Image, became Public Enemy Number One.
And in the time of the end, friends, the thing that will mark the
difference between those who follow God and those who follow the
beast will be their obedience to God's Word.

In fact, this is made very clear. Who is the Devil angry with in the
end of time? Notice what it says in Revelation 12:17,

"And the drQgon WQSwroth with the uioman, Qnd went to make
WQrwith the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments
of God, and haoe the testimony of JesJU Christ. "

These commandments are not the ceremonial laws of Moses.

The 'remnant," the ones whom the Devil is angry with, are keeping
the •commandments of God.• It becomes obvious that in this great
conflict, this is indeed the case. It says In Revelation 14:9 and 10,

"And the third Qngel followed them, sQglng with Q loud toice, If
Qny mQn worship the beast and hlslmQge, Qnd receive his mark
in hls Iorehead, or In hh hQnd, The same shQII drinle of the wine
of the wrQth of God. .•"

Now come down to verse 12 and notice what it says,

"Here ls the patience of the salnts: here are theg that leeep the
commandments of God.••"

Don't you see, friends? The big issue is, are we going to obey the
commandments of God or are we going to follow the beast and obey
the changes that he has made. And the bottom line is going to be:

Page- ]2
IVhen Protestantism Follows the Beast

will we worship the beast and his image? Will we receive his mark in
our foreheads or in our hands? [Revelation 13:16, paraphrased).

Now, some people have said, "Oh well, that law about making images,
that was a Mosaic institution" That's the greatest deception that the
Devil has ever been able to perpetrate on mankind - to think that
what God wrote with His own finger in stone is Mosaic. Turn with
me to a number of texts. I want to establish beyond a shadow of a
doubt that in the Word of God there is a clear distinction made
between the laws that are moral and the laws that are ceremonial.

Notice Daniel 9:11. Daniel is praying to God and he says,

''Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that
they might not obey thy oolce; •• n

Notice, the law we are talking about here is the law that God gave
with His own voice. Then it says,

'~.. therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that Is
written In the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have
sinned against him. /I

Now, in this text there are clearly two laws brought forth. There is
lhe law of God which He spoke with His own voice and then there is
lhe law of Moses. In one verse we find two different laws - the law of
God and the law of Moses. Turn with me to 2 Kings 21:8. It says,

"Netther willI make the feet of Israel mooe any more out of the
land which I gave their fathers; only if they will observe to do
according to aU that I have commanded them, and according to
all the law that my servant Moses commanded them. /I

Don't you see very clearly here the word "commanded" is repeated
twice? Once when God commanded He said, ·Only if they will observe
to do all that Ihave commanded them": this teJls what God Himself
commanded them. He wrote with His own finger, spoke with His own
mouth and wrote on tables of stone. But then it says, •And according
to all the law that my servant Moses commanded them. -

Page 13
J.YhenProtestantism Follows the Beast

Very clearly, here again we see two different sets of laws - one given
by God, the other given by Moses. You see, it's important that we
notice this because the Bible says that in the time of the end the beast
will indeed, attempt to play with God's laws. It says he will 'think to
change times and laws' [Daniel 7:25]. And when we read the book
of Revelation, it's obvious that the question of obedience to God will
be the question that sets the destiny of the world. It says that the
dragon 'was wroth with the woman and went to make war with the
remnant of her seed which keep the commandments of God'
[Revelation 12:17]. And friends, if we don't know what the difference
is between the commandments of God and the commandments of
Moses, between the laws of God and the laws of Moses, between what
God has called moral and ceremonial, then we won't be able to discern
what we are to obey or what we are to follow. Now notice
Deuteronomy 31:24. It says,

'~nd it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the
words of this law in a book..• H

Notice the word "this.' It's a demonstrative pronoun. You don't have
to use this or that unless you've got two things. And the verse says
very clearly,

'~•.when Moses had made an end of writing the words of tha law
in a book•••n

Notice, 'this law' was written by Moses 'in a book." But now, friends,
we'll see there is another law in Deuteronomy 4:13, (we won't turn
there yet.) that is written not by Moses, but by God Himself; and it's
not written in a book, but in 'tables of stone.' Notice with me that
it says,

~nd he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you

to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two
tables of stone. n

Deuteronomy 31:25 and 26 says,

'That Moses commanded the Leoites, which bare the ark of the
covenant of the LORD saying, Take this book of the law, and put

Page. 14
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

It in the side of the ark of the covenant of the L,.ORD your God,
that it mal/'be there for a witness against thee. II

Notice the words "against thee." What law did Paul say was nailed
to the cross? Colossians 2:14 says,
:-

'~..the handwriting of ordinances that was against us.••"

Here it is, friends. The law that was "against us" was the Mosaic or
ceremonial law that was written "in a book." And so, this law of Moses
written in a book that was "against us" is the law that, when Christ
came was abolished, according to Ephesians 2:15. Now, turn with me
to Deuteronomy 4: 12 and 13. You will notice a great difference here.

'~nd the LORD spake unto I/ou out of the midst of the fire: ye
heard the voice ofthe words, but saw no similitude; onll/ ye heard
a voice. . And he declared unto you his covenant, which he
commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he
wrote them upon two tables of stone. II

Now who wrote these laws? Very clearly, it was God. In fact, in
Exodus 34:1 and 34:28 it clearly says that God wrote these laws.

..I [God] will write upon these tables the words that were In the
'~
first tables, which thou brakest:"

You see, Moses did not write the Ten Commandments in stone, It
was God Himself who wrote them. Even after Moses came down and
broke the tables, the Bible confirms that God again wrote them with
His own finger in tables of stone [Exodus 34: 1].

So, it's important that we make this distinction between these two
laws - the law of God and the laws of Moses. One set of laws is
ceremonial and the other set is moral.

Now you say, "Well, why would the Devil hate God's law and attempt
to change it?" Here's the answer, friends. You see, the Bible says a
lot of things about the character of God, doesn't it? Remember Isaiah
6:3, where the angels say,

Page 15
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

Holy, holy, holy, Is the LORD God of hosu: The whole earth 1$
1~••

full of his glory. II

You see, the angels never stop saying that God is holy. That's His
character. He's holy. Furthermore, in Revelation 15:3 the Bible says,

I~ •• just and true are thy ways, thou King of salnu. "

So, God is holy and God is [ust, Furthermore, the Bible says that God
is good. Remember 19: 16, when they called Jesus "Good
in Matthew
Master,' and Jesus said [verse 17J,

'~.•Why callest thou me good? there u none good but one, that Is,
God..•"

I have known people who have gone to that verse to prove that Jesus
Isn't God, but that can't be, for in John 10: 11 Jesus says,

"I am the good shepherd. •• II

He is good. He says, ·1 am the good shepherd.' And the Old

Testament says 'Yahweh is my shepherd" [Psalm 23:1]. But Jesus is
the Good Shepherd and there's "none good but one, that is, God"
[Matthew 19:17J. SO it's clear that Jesus. is part of the Godhead,

''For In him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily."

[Colossians 2:9J

When we study the Scriptures, it's clear that when we talk about the
character of the Godhead, the character of God, He is holy, just and
good. In fact, Jesus says in Matthew 5:48,

"Be ye therefore pertect, as your Father which u In heaoen Is

perfect. II

So if we were to describe God's character, we'd describe it this way,

according to the Bible: holy, just, good and perfect, Notice what Paul
says about the law of God, not the law of Moses, not the ceremonial
laws. No, no. It's obvious, that he's talking about the Ten
Commandments, because he says In Romans 7:7,

Page.16
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

''What shaU we sag then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nag, I had
not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except
the law had said, Thou shalt not cODeL"

Now, what law says, "Thou shalt not coveP? The Ten
Commandment-law. It is the tenth of the Ten Commandments. So,
he's [Paul is] referring here to the laws that God wrote with His own
finger in stone. Now, it says in verse 12,

''Wherefore the law Is holy, the commandment holy, and just, and
good."

So, here the law is holy and the commandment holy and just and
good. Obviously, this law is a transcript of God's character. In fact,
Psalm 19:7 says,

'The law of the LORD Is perfect .••n

Now, think it through. God is holy, just, good and perfect But from
two Scriptures, in the New Testament as well as the Old, we find that
God's law is also holy, just, good and perfect You see, the law
becomes a transcript of God's character. Now you understand why
Satan hates the law - because it reminds him of God. So the Devil
attempts to twist the signpost, to change the directions so that he can
confuse the world. Today people don't know which way is up, they
don't know which way to go, they can't tell right from wrong because
they have turned their back on God's law. Now notice Romans 7:22.

Here's the Apostle Paul, filled with the Holy Ghost, a new covenant
Christian, and what does he say?

"
/II deUght In the law of God after the Inward man:"

And notice what he says in Romans 3:31, because, you see, there has
been a lot of misunderstanding, even among Christians, as to what
Paul believed about God's law. Now, the reason there is so much
confusion is because Christians have not differentiated between those
ceremonial or Mosaic laws that were nailed to the cross, and the law
of God that is still binding today. Remember, friends, it is clear from
Scripture that there are two laws: the law of God and the laws of
Moses, the moral law and the ceremonial laws. The laws of Moses

Page 17
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

were nailed to the cross when Jesus died. The laws of Moses, whlch
were ceremonial in nature, have been abolished. But friends, if the
beast, after the time of the ten horns, after the fall of the Roman
Empire, would attempt to "change times and laws," it's obvious that
a law must remain intact There still has to be a law that the beast
can attempt to change. And it's obvious that there is still a law in the
new covenant, as we'll see from a number of texts. In one that we Just
read, it says, ·1 delight in the law of God.· Paul didn't say I delighted,
past tense. He says the law Is holy, Just and good. He didn't say the
law was holy, just and good. You see, Paul still believed in the Ten
Commandments. In fact, notice what he says right here in Romans
3:31,

"Dowe then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea,
we establish the law. "

What was Jesus' mission? As you compare these texts, you will see
the great difference between antichrist and Jesus Christ Notice that
antichrist comes to change God's law. But what does Jesus say about
His mission and His work? Here's what Isaiah said that Christ would
do in reference to God's law. Isaiah 42:19,

"Whois blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I

sent? who is blind as he that is perfect; and blind as the LORD's
servant?"

Now that's referring to Jesus, because He is the Lord's servant He

is the only One who was perfect But you may say, ·Well, why does
it say He is deaf and blind]" Well, friends, because He was deaf to
the accusations of lawbreakers. Remember when they brought the
woman caught in adultery before Him? He stared down at the ground
as though He were blind to her sin, and when they accused and
accused He answered nothing; as though He were deaf. But as He
wrote in the sand, one by one these men were convicted of their own
sins and left And when the woman looked at Him, He said,

'~..Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. n [John 8:11J

Now, notice it goes on to say here that He sees many things. Isaiah
42:20 says,

Page ,18
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

"Seeing many things, but thou obseroest not; open}ng the ears, but
he heareth not II

Friends, it was the Lord Jesus Christ, He who is perfect, who opened
the deaf ears. Now it says in Isaiah 42:21,

'The LORD Is well pleased for hb rlghteousneu sake: he win

magnify the law, 'and make It honorable. /I

Now read the whole chapter. It's a chapter dealing with the Messiah
and what the Messiah would do. And it says the Messiah' would
"magnify the law and make it honorable."

Now, again we can't be referring to the ceremonial laws of Moses,

because we know that when Jesus came He abolished the laws
contained in ordinances that were "against us." But what did He do
in reference to the Ten Commandments? Let's turn to Matthew 5: 21
and 22. You will notice how clear it is. Remember when Jesus said,

/lYehave heard that It was said by them of old time, Thou shaU not
lcill... 1/

What did Jesus do to that commandment? Did He do away with it?

Did He say, "Now you can kill all you want"? "Oh yes," some people
say, "God wrote 'Thou shalt not kill,' but now you can just forget
about that" That's not what Jesus did, friends. He magnified the law
and made it honorable. He says,

/lYehave heard that It was said by them of old, Thou shalt not kill;
but I say unto you that If you hate your brother without a cause,
you are a murderer. [paraphrased]
U

Now go on and read Matthew 5:27 and 28, where it says,

''¥ehave heard that It was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not
commit adultery: But I say unto you, that whosoever loolreth on
a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her
already In his heart./I

Again, do you see what Jesus is doing? He's magnifying the law and
making it honorable. Now, did Jesus come to do away with the law,

Page 19
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

to destroy the law? Notice, the beast or the antichrist would "think
to change times and laws' [Daniel 7:25]. But far be it from Jesus to
have this thought in mind. In fact, notice His own words, the very
words of Jesus, In Matthew 5:17,

'Think not that I am come to destroy the low, or the propheb: I

am not come to destroy, hut to fulnL"

Now, don't let that word 'fulfil' confuse you. I'll never forget meeting
someone who said, 'Oh yes, but Jesus fulfilled the law.' And then I
said, •Amen.' And I said, 'What do you understand by that word
'fulfilled'?" And she said, "Well, to fulfill means to destroy, to do away
with." I said, NOh,is that what it means? Well, if fulfilled means to
destroy or do away with, then if you put that word which means the
same thing, according to you, in the text It should make sense, tight]"
She didn't understand, so I said, 'Well, let's read it that way. Let's
read it the way you understand it. 'Think not that I am come to
destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to
destroy: Well, now, Jesus wouldn't 'double talk: You see, to fulfill
does not mean to destroy." In fact, in Galatians 6:2 Paul says,

'~..fulnt the law of Christ"

Now. did Paul mean to do away with the law? No. To ·fulfill· means
to fill full or to keep. And Jesus did not come to destroy the 'law or
the prophets" [Matthew 5:17]. He came to keep the law, and He was
the only man who kept it perfectly, and He gives us that gift of His
perfect righteousness when we believe in Him by faith.

And so as we read the Scriptures, it's obvious that this word "fulfill"
does not mean to do away with. In fact, In James 2:8 we read that If
we love one another we "fulfill the royal law," according to Scripture.

By fulfill, He didn't mean, If you love one another you do away with
the law. No. He says that you fulfill It. You are obeying It, you are
living it out and filling it full. And so, according to the Bible, Jesus
did not "come to destroy the law," but to live it out perfectly.

Now, let's keep reading in verse 18; and again, keep in mind that the
beast or the antichrist would "thlnk to change times and laws.' But
what does Jesus say? Read what Matthew 5: 18 says,

Page 20
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

':.. verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, oneJot or one
tittle shall In no wise pas. from the law, till all be fulfilled. "

Now, notice He says "till heaven and earth pass. I Are the heavens
still here? Is the earth still here? Then God's law is still here. Not
those ceremonial laws of Moses. No, no. The ceremonial laws of
Moses were nailed to the cross. But God's law, Jesus says, will abide
as long as the heavens and the earth endure. That's why, friends, no
matter what the beast may say or do, I will not bow down to that
'.
image. Because God wrote with His own finger in stone. What do
you think that means when He wroteIt In stone? You know, if you
write something in a book, that could fade away. But when you write
it in stone it's going to last a long time.

Matthew 5: 19 goes on,

"Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least

commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least
in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them,
the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

So Jesus made it clear that there was a law that would endure through
the new covenant, through the New Testament times, even until the
end. And it's that law that the beast would attempt to change. But
Jesus says that "not one jot or one tittle" shall in any way be changed
[Matthew 5:18].

It can't pass away. It cannot be changed. Now, listen to the Scripture

and you will see why this attempt is indeed so blasphemous. To think
to change God's law is "to speak great things' against God. It says
in Psalm 89:30 and 31,
'.
"If his children forsake my law, and wallt not In myJudgments; If
they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments;"

Notice the context, His law, His commandments. Then it says in verse
34.

''My covenant wiU I not break, nor alter the thing that Is gone out
of my lips."

Page 21
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

God says I will not alter the thing that is gone out of My lips. What
is a synonym of alter? Change. God says He will not change what has
gone out of His lips. He will not break His covenant, nor alter what
has gone out of His lips. And in Deuteronomy 4: 13 we read that God
declared unto you His covenant -even ten commandments, - and the
people heard His voice, and He wrote it with His own finger in stone.

Friends, the only laws that God spoke from His lips that He called His
covenant, that He wrote in stone, were the Ten Commandments. And
He says,

''Mycovenant willI not break.•." [Psalm 89:34]

Iwon't break it And Iwill not "alter the thing that is gone out of my
lips." Let's once again establish that this law of God, the Ten
Commandments, cannot be changed. It cannot be altered. That's why
the Bible said the beast would "think to change times and laws."
Because though he may attempt it, though he may think to do it, he
will not succeed. And the reason he will not succeed is because there
is a people who have His law written "not in tables of stone, but in
fleshy tables of the heart- [2 Corinthians 3:3]. And that's the beautiful
part of it It says in Psalm 111:7 and 8,

"The works of his hands are verity' and judgment; all his
commandments are sure. "

Notice, this is the work of His hands. How did God write the Ten
Commandments? With His own finger in stone. And so it says,

"The uiorks of his hands are verity and judgment; all his
commandments are sure. They stand fast for ever and ever, and
are done In truth and uprightness. n

You see friends, they can't change. It says God's work, the work of
God's hands,

'~.. his commandments are sure. They stand fast forever and
ever..•"

No wonder Jesus said as long as the heaven and the earth endures,
"not one jot or one tittle shall in any wise pass from the law." No

Page ~2
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

wonder the beast is spoken of as doing -great th~!1gs- against God

when he attempts to change God's law. But friends, there is a people
who will not follow the beast, There always has been, there always
will be a people who follow God. And that's why it says in Revelation
12: 17 that "the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make
war with the remnant of her seed, who keep the commandments of
God, and have the testimony of Jesus," You see, the Devil will be
angry at anyone who will not bow down to that image.

Turn with me to the book of Hebrews. The important thing that we

need to understand is that we are not under the old covenant; we are
under the new covenant, We are new covenant Christians. But do
you know that many Christians don't even know what the new
covenant is? Let's read about it right here in the book of Hebrews.
And let us understand what the new covenant is and let us understand
the difference between the old covenant and the new covenant, It's
so important that we grasp this fact, It says in Hebrews 8:8,

"Forfinding fault with them, he salth, Behold, the days come, saith
the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah:"

So God says, -I will make a new covenant," A new covenant, And

then He says in verses 9 and 10,

"Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers In

the day when I took them b/l the hand to lead them out of the land
of Egypt; because they continued not In my covenant, and I
regarded them not, laith the Lord. For this II the covenant that I
will make. •."

So, here in verse 10 He is talking about the new covenant, He is

going to tell us what this new covenant is all about, What is this new
covenant?

"Forthis Is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
after those days, salth the Lord; I will put my laws In their mind,
and write them In their hearts: I w/ll be to them a God, and they
shall be to me a people:"

Page 23
»'hen Protestantism Follows the Beast

Now friends, it is so important that we understand the difference

between the old covenant and the new covenant The old covenant
was ratified by the blood of bulls and goats. And God wrote in the
old covenant, His law in stone. And the people said,in Exodus 19:8,
"Everything that God has said, we're going to do" [paraphrased]. And
they tried to do it in their own strength and by their own power; and
they failed miserably. But now God says, "I'm going to make a new
covenant with the house of Israel." A new covenant He says that
this time it will be not the blood of bulls and goats, but the blood of
a spotless "Lamb which taketh away the sins of the world" [John 1:29].

So the new covenant was ratified by the blood of Jesus. Now, does
this new-covenant do away with His law? Does God say in this new
covenant, "I won't have a law"? Does God say in this new covenant,
"I will get rid of the law"? No. He says this is the new covenant, which
I will make with them after those days. I will write my laws in their
minds and in their hearts [Hebrews 8:10]. What law does He write in
our minds and in our hearts? It says in 2 Corinthians 3:3,

"Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ

ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the
living God.•. If

Now He's talking about what the Holy Spirit is going to write. He
says this is written "with the Spirit of the living God.· And then He
says,

'~••not in tables of stone, but In fleshy tables of the heatt: "

Now friends, what did God write in the tables of stone? The Ten
Commandments. The minute Paul says "tables of stone" we know
what law he is talking about And God says that this time I'm going
to write My law, not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of your
heart So, it is obvious that the law God says He is going to write in
our hearts is not some new law or some different law, but the same
law that He wrote at one time in tables of stone. And that's why,
friends, it was wrong to kill then and it's wrong to kill now. It was
wrong to commit adultery then and it is wrong to commit adultery
now.

Page 24
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

In fact, let me share with you that everyone of the Ten

Commandments existed before Moses was ever born. Think it
through. Every one of the Ten Commandments existed before Moses
was ever born. Didn't Joseph know better than to commit adultery
when Potiphar's wife attempted to seduce him? [Genesis 39:7-9].
Didn't Cain know better than to kill his brother Abel? [Genesis 4:8,
9]. Didn't Rachel know better than to steal her father's idols? [Genesis
31:34]. Didn't Abraham know better than to lie to Abimelech?
[Genesis 20:1, 2]. Friends, every one of the Ten Commandments can
be traced in the Old Testament before Moses was ever born. And so,
in no way, shape or form can the Ten. Commandments be attributed
to Moses. Oh, yes, Moses wrote those ten commandments in a book,
and they were part of his Book of the Law, along with the ceremonial
ordinances, but those laws had their origin with God. In fact, turn
with me to Genesis 26, and I'll prove this. Abraham, remember, was
under the new covenant Abraham was saved through grace, by faith
[Romans 4:1-5], the same way we are, but notice what it says here in
Genesis 26:5:

"Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, kept my charge, my

commandments, my statutes, and my laws. "

So Abraham kept God's commandments and he kept God's laws. And

yet Abraham was saved by grace, according to Paul, the same way we
are. Moses hadn't even come yet But Abraham kept God's laws.

You see, friends, grace is not against God's law. Paul says, in Romans
3:31,

"Dowe make void the law through faith? God forbid•••"

In Romans 6:1 he says,

''What JhaU we Jay then? Shall we continue In sin. ••/I

And what is sin? 1 John 3:4, a very important text, says,

'~..sin iJ the tramgression of the law. "

What is sin? John says in the New Testament, "sin is the transgression
of the law.· So, there must still be a law if there is sin. If there is no

Page 25
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

more law, then there is no more transgression. In fact, Paul, in

Romans 4: 15, comes right out and says,

"Because the law worlceth wrath: for where no low is, there is no
transgression. II

So, if there was no law, there would be no sin. And if there's no sin,
we don't need a Saviour. But Jesus-what Is His name? Jesus. What's
the reason they called His name Jesus? Because, "he shall save his
people from their sin" [Matthew 1:21]. And what is sin? "The
transgression of the law.I John says it in the New Testament. People
are still sinning. And what is sin? "Transgression of the law," so there
must still be a law, and there is. And it's that law that the beast is
attempting to change.

In these last days, Christians who are saved by grace will not have an
attitude that they can do anything and live any kind of way. Christians
who are saved by grace today will agree with Paul, IDo we make void
the law through faith]" Our answer will be, "Cod forbid. We establish
the law" [Romans 3:31]. With Paul, in Romans 6:1 and 2, we'll say,

''Whatshall we sag then? Shall we continue In sln•••n (Will we go

on breaking God's commandments?) ".••that grace may aboundP"

Again, what's the answer?

"Godforbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer
therein?"

Now somebody may quote Romans 6:15 where Paul says,

"... we are not under the low, but under grace.•. n

I've heard that quoted many times. In fact, I remember preaching

this In a particular audience where there were many, many people
who belonged to churches that did bow down to images. They had
images in their churches. And this stepped on their toes a little bit,
you know. On the way out, a lady came to me and said, "But, we're
not under the law but under grace." In other words, it's all right to
bow down to statues now, because we're not under the law, but under
grace. And again I clarified to her that the law that said, "Thou shalt

Page 26
W'hen Protestantism Follows the Beast

not make unto thee any graven image ...or bow doW,n...to them" was
not the Mosaic or ceremonial law but it was one of the Ten
Commandments that Jesus said would never be changed, never be
done away with. And she said, "Yes, but it still says we're not under
the law but under grace.' I said, "Now, I wish you'd read the whole
passage-there; in fact, read the whole chapter.' Because, it's right
there that Paul says, 'What shall we say then, shall we continue In
sin that grace may abound? God forbid' [Romans 6:1,2].

You see, Paul never meant for us to understand by that statement

that we're "not under the law but under grace, that we could go
I

ahead and break God's law and continue in grace. That is not what
Paul meant for us to understand. In fact, let me give you a little
illustration that will clarify what Paul meant.

If I get out here on the highway this evening and go speeding down
the highway and a policeman comes behind me, lights flashing, and
pulls me over, what am I under? The law; that's what I'm under. Now,
if he comes up to me and looks at me and he says,"For no reason,
just out of the unmerited favor of my heart, I'm going to let you go.'
What am I under? Grace. It's obvious. You see, I don't deserve it.
I deserve a ticket I was speeding. I was under the law. But now, for
no reason except the mercy of his heart, he says, "I'm going to let you
gO." Now, I'm under grace. Now, what do I do? Do I say, "Thank
you.Offlcer." Vrooooomi Do I take off down the highway [speeding
again]? Why, of course not, friends. You see, we are not under the
law, but under grace, because we have been forgiven, because we
have tasted of the grace of Jesus Christ And that grace has so affected
our hearts, so touched and changed our mind and nature, that now
every time we think about sinning, we think about Jesus and we say,
"Lord, deliver me out of temptation. I

Every time you go by that particular police car, that particular place
where the policeman stopped you, without even thinking about it,
your foot comes off the gas, doesn't it? Hasn't that happened to you?
You see, friends, that's what grace does for you, In fact, Titus 2:11
and 12 says,

"For the grace 01 Cod that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all
men, Teaching IU that, denying ungodlinus and worldly lusts, we
should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;"

Page 27
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

..', .•

That's the teaching of Cod's grace. Cod's grace doesn't tell me, -Co
ahead and commit adultery; God will forgive you. - Cod's grace
doesn't tell me to kill or bow down to images. God's grace tells me to
obey, and by His grace and power and by His Spirit, I can Why?
Because He promises in the new covenant to write His law in our
hearts and in our minds. :,

How many laws does the Devil have to play with? Does he have to
change them all? We are about to understand how Protestantism will
follow the beast Let's read James 2:10. Remember, we're reading in
the New Testament It says,

"For whosoever shall keep the whole law ••. n

Now, we have to ask ourselves a question: what law is James talking

about here? He will make it plain in the next verse. Any text without
the context is a pretext But the context will always make it clear.

'~.. whosoever shall keep the wlrole law, and get offend in one point,
he is guilty of all. "

Now, let's see what law he is talking about Is he talking about the
law of Moses here? Let's see. Verse 11 says,

"For Ire that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kilL
Now If thou commit no adultery, get if thou kill, thou art become
a transgressor of tire law. II

Now, it's obvious; he's talking here about the Ten Commandments,"
It's in the Ten Commandments that you find, "Thou shalt not kill,
Thou shalt not commit adultery," And he says, -If you break one, you
are guilty of them all.- Because if you keep the whole law of Ten
Commandments but offend in one, you are guilty of them all. You've
become a transgressor of the law. And then he says in James 2:12,

"So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by tire law of
liberty. /I

So, God's law is a law of liberty. I can't believe that there are
Christians who are antinomian I don't know if you know what that
word means. "Annnomtan" Is a big word. It means, against the law.

, Page 28
U'hen Protestantism Follows the Beast

I've been in certain places where when you mention the law they say,
"Ugh, the law." But friends, God's law is a blessing. Aren't you glad
about the law of gravity? Why, if it wasn't there, you'd be floating
even now, bumping your head upon the ceiling. Aren't you glad for
laws like stoplights and yellow lines? Some people don't stay on their
side of the lines. I wish they would. But I thank God that there's a
law that says to stay on your side of the line. You see, laws are given
not to make us miserable but to preserve our lives.

"...the wagn of sin Is death.•." [Romans 6:23]

If we break the law, we're going to die. God knows if we run around
and play around and cheat, we're going to come down with some kind"
of disease. And He knows it will ruin the happiness of our homes. So
God says, "Thou shalt not commit adultery." And God knows that

'~.. uihatsoeoer a man soioeth, that shall he also reap." [Galatians

6:7]

And so He said, "Do not kill. Do not lie. Do not commit adultery,"
Friends, the Bible is clear. These laws are not against us. They are (or
us.

"Honouryour father and your mother: that your days may be long
upon the land which the LORD thy God glDeth thee." [Exodus
20:12]

And Paul quotes that one in the New Testament in Ephesians 6:2. It
wasn't done away with. It was just as binding in the New Testament
as In the Old. Why? Because it was one of those laws that God wrote
with His own finger In stone and that, In the new covenant, He writes
in the tables of our heart Remember, Paul says,

"Idelight In the law of Godatter the Inward mans" [Romans 7:22]

But notice in 1 John 2: verses 3,4, and 7,

commandments, Is a liar, and the truth Is not In him. Brethren,
I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment

Page 29

which ye haDehad from the beginning. TIre old commandment Is

the word which ye haDeheard from the beginning. II

You see, friends, all of the Ten Commandments are based upon the
law of love. If you love God, you'll keep the first four. And if you
love your neighbor, you'll keep the last six. And that's why Paul says
that

'~..looe Is the tulfilUng of the law. n [Romans 13:10]

It doesn't mean that if you love, you can break them. But if you love,
you'll keep them. A lot of people today want to talk about love. We
call it "sloppy agape," or "cheap grace." Have you ever heard of that?
"Cheap grace, sloppy agape." 1 John 5:2 and 3 says,

''By this we /mow that we looe the children of God, when we looe
God, and keep his commandments. For this Is the looe of God,
that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not
grleoous."

Friends, it is no sin to want to obey God. In fact, in the last days it's
obvious that it's with those obedient Christians that the Devil is going
to be upset.

How then will Protestantism follow the beast? Well, in the same way
that the Devil deceived the world in the past. You see, he "thinks to
change" God's law. And he wants to foist that change and that
deception upon the whole world. And the Bible is clear. The "whole
world will wonder after the beast" [Revelation 13:3]. The whole world
will worship the beast. An image of the beast will be set up. And the
world will bow to the image of that beast [Revelation 13:15]. But
God's people will not. That's why there'll be a great tribulation, such
as never has been known since there was a nation. No, nor ever shall
be known [Matthew 24:21]. God will preserve the people then who
follow Him. But thank God, He does have a way of escape.

If you have your Bible, in closing I want you to turn to Revelation 13.
We've talked. about America in our past lecture. We want to learn
what part America will play in Bible prophecy. It's important that you
understand what we've already said in past lectures to establish what
we're going to say right now. Read in Revelation 13:5,

Page 30
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

'There was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and
blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and
two months. II -,

Right away, we know that this is talking about the beast - the beast
who has a mouth like a lion, the feet of a bear, the body of a leopard
and ten horns. And we know that this is not a literal beasl This is a
symbol. And it says that this symbolic beast Is going to reign for 42
months. Now, it's obvious that if the beast is a symbol, the time period
must also be symbolic. Now 42 months are 1260 literal days. But
would a symbolic beast reign literal days? No. We must be consistent
and understand that this symbolic beast reigns during symbolic time.
And we've already learned the key to understanding symbolic time
prophecies in the Bible. This is not true of every text in the Bible that
refers to time. This is only true of symbolic Bible prophecy time
periods. When the Bible says God made the world in six days, that's
literal days. It says, "the evening and the morning." That's not
prophecy; that's history. When we read that Jesus was dead three
days, that's not symbolic prophecy; that's history. That's telling us
He was dead for three days. But when we get to the book of Daniel
and Revelation, we're talking about beasts, and horns, and all of this,
and we know that it is symbolic. Just like the 70 weeks are symbolic,
the 490 days, we know, are literal years. And Ezekiel 4:6 says,

n••• 1 have appointed you each day (or a year. "

Numbers 14:34 also says,

'~•.each day for a year••."

And so we know that this beast was to arise after the fall of the Roman
Empire, among the first of the ten barbarian tribes because,
remember, he was to subdue three of the first horns. He was to
continue for 1260 years, for 1260 symbolic days, or years. These are
the 42 months. And he did exactly that, But read in Revelation 13:10
what's going to happen at the end of that 1260 years or 42 symbolic
months. It says,

"Hethat leadeth Into captivity shall go Into capt/vlty ..•"

Page 31
When Protestantism Follows the Beast
I'

,'J ..•

Now remember, this system was to reap what it had sown. It made
war on the saints. It had taken them into captivity. There was the
Inquisition. Many, many people, saints of Cod, were thrown into
dungeons, beheaded, burned at the stake and persecuted. They were
taken captive. And yet it says,

"He that leadeth into captioity shall go into captioity: he that

killet" with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here Is the
patience and the faith of the saints. II [Revelation 13:10]

Now, friends, that happened in 1798 when Napoleon's general,

Berthier, rode into Rome and took the man at the head of this system
into captivity? The beast received "a deadly wound" by the same sword
that it had used against the so-called heretics. Remember, it was the
sword of France that was one of the most lethal in the hands of this
system against the Protestants of that time. And yet, "he that killeth
with a sword must be killed by the sword." And it was the sword of
France that did indeed give to this beast a "deadly wound."

Now when that deadly wound is inflicted in verse 10, immediately

following in verse 11 it says,

''/ beheld another beast coming up out of the earth... /I

Now, stop right here, because I want you to notice the connection
with the earth immediately following the 1260-year period. It
mentions the 42 months in verse 5. In verse 10 it mentions that this
beast will be killed with the sword, which happens at the end of that
period. And the very next verse says that when this beast receives a
wound, when this beast is killed with the sword, John sees another
beast coming up out of the earth. Now notice Revelation 12:14,

"And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she
might ny into the wilderness, Into her place, where she is
nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of
the serpent. II

Now, here is a woman with wings, and she is flying in the wilderness.
Again, it is not a literal woman, not literal wings, and not literal time.
The time represents years. That brings us down to 1798; and it says
in Revelation 12:16,

Page 32
~t'henProtestantism Follows the Beast

"And the earth helped the woman ..• n

I want you to notice that in both of these prophecies.after the 1260

years, when the beast is receiving a deadly wound, the earth is brought
to view. He says,

'1 beheld another beast coming up out of the earth. n [Revelation

13:11]

Revelation 12:16 says,

"•.•the earth helped the woman ..• n

We can't fail to see that the earth is brought to view at the end of the
1260-year period. Now, here is the question: why does this prophecy
talk about a beast coming up •out of the earth"] Listen, all the beasts
that have come before this one have come up "out ofthe sea: every
beast in Daniel 7 and in Revelation 13. But this time the beast comes
'out of the earth." That's different, friends. Now, the sea represented
the Old World. In fact, some of the newer versions in Daniel 7 actually
say the Mediterranean Sea And those beasts came out of the Old
World, the European world, the Mediterranean world. They all came
up in that densely populated area The sea represents 'multitudes,
nations, people and tongues" [Revelation 17:15]. But there was
another part of the world, my friends, that was not densely populated;
that was not situated over there in the densely populated areas of the
world, in the old Mediterranean world. There was another part of the
world called North America, a sparsely-populated area And it was
exactly as God said. After the 1260 years when this beast was
receiving a "deadly wound," North America was arising as a nation of
prominence in the world. John, in Revelation 13:11, says that when
this beast would receive a deadly wound,

'1beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two
horns like a lamb... "

Why friends, this beast was not a lamb, but

'~.•he had two horns lib a lamb..• n

Page 33
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

" .
Now, it doesn't say what kind of beast it was, and we really don't
know. An artist has imagined that it may have been the bison or
buffalo. We don't know what beast it was, so we can't be dogmatic
on that John doesn't say what beast it was, but he does say it was a
beast that came out of the earth and it had two horns like a lamb.
Now, what is a lamb the symbol of? Christ Christ is the "Lamb of
God that taketh away the sins of the world" [John 1:29]. And so here
is a beast or a kingdom, a nation; but notice - there are no crowns on
its horns. It's a beast, it's a kingdom, a nation. But no crowns, no
king. And it says it arose out of the earth and it was like a lamb. It
was a Christian nation, my friends. No other beast in the entire Bible
was ever spoken of as being, "like a lamb." But here is such a beast
It doesn't come out of the Old World, but out of the New World.
When did the lamb-like beast arise? It arose at about 1798; at about
the time that the lion-like beast was receiving the deadly wound. Now
remember, the United States became a nation in 1776, but the Bill of
Rights which promised religious liberty did not go into effect until
about 1798. And so it's at this time, when this lion-like beast is going
into captivity and receiving the deadly wound, that John says he
beheld, at that time, "another beast coming up out of the earth." It
was, even then, coming up out of the earth, the same earth that had
helped the woman.

Now, where did God's church find a place of safety, a place of refuge,
a place of hiding from the tyranny of the Old World religious system?
It was here in North America [a wilderness]. And out of this same
North America that would help the woman, another beast is to arise:
a lamb-like beast having two horns like a lamb. Now, what do those
two horns represent? They most likely represent the two systems that
were indeed separated in this nation contrary to every other kingdom.
In America, remember, religion and politics did not mix. The
constitution of the United States established separation of church and
state. And so Democracy and Protestantism were the two horns that
established America as a place of religious liberty and a place of
religious tolerance. And yet, what's interesting is that as we study
the Scriptures it says that though this beast "had two horns like a
lamb, he spake as a dragon." So this beast is to become a dragon-like
power; a world-wide power that would command the authority and
respect of the whole world. And then it goes on to say,

Page 34 '
W71en Protestantism Follows the Beast

"he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and
causeth the earth and them that dwell therein to worship the first
beast, whose deadly wound was healed. And h, doeth great
wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the
'.
earth In the sight 01men. n [Revelation 13:12, 13)

Now friends, obviously there's more to that than what I am about to

say. But isn't it interesting that there is one nation that did, indeed,
brlngrflre down from heaven" on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? And it
was the United States of America, the same nation that was arising
when the lion-like beast was going into captivity. It did, indeed, come
with "horns like a lamb," a Christian nation; and it did, indeed, begin
speaking "like a dragon." And today, remember, it is America that.
has sent an ambassador to this system acknowledging that it is a
kingdom, not just a religion. You don't send an ambassador to a
church. You send an ambassador to a nation. Just a number of years
ago, the great nation of America sent an ambassador to this system.
And friends, there are constant communications between this system
and the United Stales of America. There is constant intrigue, political
activity and espionage being carried on, and it doesn't take a big brain
to figure that out [see Time Magazine, Feb. 24, 1992).

The fact of the matter is, that in the future Protestantism will follow
the beast. In fact, it says that this beast [the beast of Revelation 13:11]
will form an "image to the beast" [Revelation 13:14]. Now, what is
an image? Something that resembles, isn't it? And when these two
horns are no longer separate, when these two horns become one, then
what do we have? We have an image to the beast, When these two
horns become one, when there is no longer this separation of church
and state, when the government begins to pass, by legislation, laws
enforcing religious restrictions that are contrary to the laws of God;
then friends, America has ceased to be that nation like a lamb. Jesus
Himself said In Mark 12:17,

'~.. Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to Cod the
things that are God~... n

Jesus established this difference of authority between spiritual things

and governmental things. And yet, in the world today, even in
Christian America, this difference Is being blended and washed away.

Page 35
When Protestantism Follows the Beast

..", ..•

And so we see, indeed, an image to the beast being formed and the
question is this - if the beast changes God' s law, if Protestantism (one
of those two horns), goes along with that change - aren't they
following the beast? Read the newspaper today, read the headlines,
read Ii.IM magazine and Newsweek. I just stopped saving the articles
because I don't have room to carry them around anymore. But we
read everywhere articles like this one that appeared in Ii.IM and
Newsweek titled, "Retracing The Reformation." Articles like this:
"Lutherans Come Home.' Articles such as these are in every one of
our journals. Friends, Protestantism is going back to Mother. It has
stopped protesting. That's where the word Protestant came from -
protestors.

In the last days, there will be a people "who follow the Lamb,
whithersoever He goeth" [Revelation 14:4] who refuse to follow the
beast Read this, beginning in Matthew 15:3 to 6, and 9,

"But He answered and said unto them, Whg do ge also transgress

the commandment of God bg gour tradition? For God
commanded, saglng, Honour thg father and mother: and, He that
curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ge sag,
Whosoever shall sag to his father or mother, It Is a gift, bg
whatsoever thou mlghtest be profited bg me; And honor not his
father or his mother, he shall be free.' Thus have ge made the
commandment of God of none effect by gour tradition. But In
vain do theg worship me, teaching for doctrines the
commandments of men. /I

Friends, God has written with His own finger in stone, "Thou shalt'
not make unto thee any graven image ...or bow down to them." And
though we know that in the time of the end an image to the beast will
be set up, our prayer should be, "Lord, write your law In my heart
that Iwill follow Jesus and His Word and not the beast"
