The Rapture and the 1000 Years

If you have your Bibles, I'd like to invite you to turn with me to Acts
1:9 to 11,

''And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was
taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while
they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two
men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of
Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus,
which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come In like
manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. II

Friends, that's good news; And do you notice how many times this
verse refers to the visual sense: the words, "as ye have seen Him";
"shall so come in like manner." Over and over again it says the
disciples "looked" into heaven, and He was taken out of their sight
as "they beheld." Friends, over six times in these three verses the Bible
appeals to the visual sense. When Jesus went up, they saw Him go
up. And the Bible says we will see Him when He returns. He shall
come

'~.. in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. 11

And so the Bible is clear that we should never be deceived by the

thought that Jesus would come in some other way. He will come
again as He went into heaven. His return will be just as real as His
leaving. I'm glad I know that, aren't you? The Bible is clear that
Jesus is coming again, and He's coming back for His church. But the
Bible is also clear that at the end of time there will be a tribulation.
Some have called it the great tribulation. The Bible calls it "the time
of trouble." Daniel 12:1 reads,

''And at that time shall Michael stand up•.. II

You know that Michael is associated with the rapture [the second
coming]. The apostle Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 4, verse 16,

Page 4
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

"Forthe Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with
the voice of the archangel •."

And we'll come back to that text, But notice again Daniel 12:1 and
2,

"And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which
standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time
of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that
same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every
one that shall be found written In the book. And many of them
that sleep In the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting
life, some to shame and everlasting contempt. "

Daniel here speaks about "a time of trouble" at the end of time. He
also speaks of the deliverance of God's people and of the resurrection.
And yet, in this passage it is not very clear when and how these events
take place in chronological order. And this is what has caused some
confusion among Christians. They know that Jesus is coming back
to deliver His people. The Bible is clear that God will indeed keep us
from the seven last plagues. Let me read you some texts that will
make this clear. Turn to 1 Thessalonians, chapter 1. It is clear,
according to Scripture, that God will preserve His saints from the
seven last plagues. He will keep them. It says in 1 Thessalonians 1:10,

"And to walt for his Son .from heaven, whom he raised from the
dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come. /I

He has "delivered us from the wrath to come." And in Revelation 16,

we find that the seven last plagues are "the wrath of God"(Revelation
16:1). And so the Bible has already said that Jesus has delivered us
from "the wrath to come. •

Friends, we will not suffer. Those who have received the seal of God,
are born-again, who love Jesus with all their hearts, and are following
Him, will not suffer the wrath of God. The first thing we need to
establish is that point: God will keep His people. It says very clearly
in Revelation 3:10,

Page 5
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

"Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep
thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the
world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. 1/

Jesus said He will keep us from the "hour of temptation which shall
come upon all the earth [world]." Again, He has promised to keep
us. Now, there's an interesting point there. He Says, "Because thou
hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee." Because
thou hast kept the word of my patience," God will "keep thee." Notice
He says, "Because thou has kept the word of my patience." What is
the "patience of the saints?" Revelation 14:12 says,

''Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the
commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. 1/

So, if we have the patience of the saints, and have kept the word of
God's patience, John says, if we have kept "the commandments of God
and the faith of Jesus," then He says,

''Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep
thee from the hour of temptation .••" [Revelation 3:10]

Yes, friends, the Bible is clear that there are those who are sealed,
and Isaiah 8: 16 says,

'~..seal the law among my disciples."

In the end of time they will be kept from the wrath of God and kept
from the seven last plagues. This is clear. There is no
misunderstanding it But the question that we must still ask is: "will
God keep us from all suffering and tribulation that may be brought
by men?"

Let's look at a few texts. 2 Timothy 3: 12 says,

"Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer
persecution. "

In John 16:33 Jesus says very clearly,

Page 6
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

1~ •• ln the world ye shall have tribulation .•.II

And if you turn with me to Acts 14:22, Paul says this,

IIConfirmlng the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to

continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation
enter into the kingdom of God. II

Now, I read these verses to let you see that God has never "promised
us a rose garden." According to Scripture, it is clear that yes, we will
be kept from the seven last plagues. But God has never promised to
preserve us from all persecution or from all tribulation. In fact,
throughout time Christians have suffered. Remember, we talked
about the beast and how he "made war with the saints" [Revelation
13:7]. And there was indeed a great tribulation of 1260 years. Millions
died during the Inquisition. Burned at the stake, friends. In the days
of the apostles many were killed by lions in the Roman Colosseum.
God has never promised to keep us from the wrath of men and from
persecution and tribulation. But He will keep us from those seven
last plagues. And set your heart at ease on that thought, at least,
because I'll tell you what, I'd rather suffer the wrath of man than the
wrath of God any time.

But the question yet remains: how will God keep us? You s~e, God
could keep us in a number of ways. God's power is not limited. And
that's why there are different views, even among Christians. Some
Christians take the pre-tribulational rapture view. Others take the
mid-tribulational rapture view. Others believe the post-tribulational
rapture view. And so when it comes to this question of the rapture
and how God will deliver His people and keep them from the seven
last plagues, there is a debate that rages.

Now friends, we don't care what theologians say or what the opinions
of men are, we want to know what, "thus saith the Lord." That's the
question we want settled.

Now, first of all, let's just make it clear that God could deliver us a
number of ways. He could indeed take us out of the world before the
plagues are ever poured out He could do that There is no limit to
God's power or strength. And yet we should remember that in the

Page 7
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

past He has worked differently. In fact, remember what Paul says in

1 Corinthians 10:11 about the things that happened unto ancient
Israel,

"Now all these things happened unto them for ensamplest and
they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the
world are come. "

So Paul says, in this text and in Romans 15:4,

"Forwhatsoever things were written aforetlme were written for

our learning..•"

They are examples, he says, for us. So these texts make it clear that
ancient Israel served as a type or a shadow. In fact, in this chapter
[1 Corinthians 10], he says they were all baptized unto Moses [1
Corinthians 10:2]. Just as we are baptized before we enter God's
church and become a part of His family, so the Bible says that the
Israelites were baptized when they walked through the Red Sea That
was a shadow or a type. It also says in 1 Corinthians 10:4,

'~nd all did drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that
spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. /I

In this chapter it is clear that Israel is an example.

Now, let me ask you a question: how did God keep Israel from the
plagues? He did keep them, remember? The last seven of the ten
plagues that fell upon Egypt did not affect Israel. Oh, Israel suffered
persecution at the hands of Pharaoh. Yes, they suffered much sorrow
and many of them were killed and afflicted. It seems they were
afflicted by the first three plagues. There were ten plagues in ancient
Egypt in Exodus 8:22 through Exodus 10:23. In Exodus 11:7 one
thing is made clear, and that is this: when the last seven plagues fell
upon Egypt, God's people were kept He preserved them. In fact, it
says He set them apart He made them different in that time because
the plagues did not affect the people of Israel.

And so those who argue for a pre-tribulatlonal rapture say, "Well, God
will preserve us by taking us out of the world." Others argue, ·Well,

Page 8
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

God can do for His saints what He did for ancient Israel, which is to
keep them in the world, but not allow the plagues to touch them or
afflict them." And so the argument goes. And it is clear that God
could do it either way. In fact, I like to quote John 17:15 where Jesus
says,

'1pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that
thou shouldest keep them from eoil. /I

And so Jesus Himself prayed: Father, don't take them out of the world
but keep them from the evil. And so obviously, God could keep us
from evil while we were yet in the world. And yet we also know that
the Bible is clear that Jesus is coming to take us out of this old world.

So again, you can see why there is some confusion and some argument
on this particular subject But friends, I'll tell you what When Jesus
speaks, the argument is over. Do you believe that? If Jesus tells us
when He will rapture His people, then we should be satisfied with His
answer; and no matter what the books may say, no matter what the
preachers say, no matter what the theologians say, what Jesus says is
going to put an end to the argument

Now, turn with me to Matthew 24 and let's look at this subject of the
rapture and the tribulation, and let's understand very clearly what the
Bible says. You will see that this will definitely settle it As we continue
studying, we will come to.more and more verses that will prove that
what Jesus taught is exactly what the Apostles Paul and John and
Peter, and all of the prophets believed about the subject of the rapture
and the tribulation. Now, right here in Matthew 24:40 and 41, it is
clear that Jesus is indeed talking about the rapture,

"Thenshall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other
left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be
taken, and the other left. /I

Now I should say something about that word "rapture," because

actually that word is not found in the Bible. You will not find the
word "rapture" anywhere in the Bible. But you will find, in the Latin
version of the Bible, the word raptura. In fact, when Paul says,

Page 9
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

. .

"For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout,
with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and
the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and
remain shall be caught up.••"

In 1 Thessalonians 4:16 and 17 that phrase "caught up" in the Latin

version of the New Testament is the word raptura or rapio. It's from
this word that we get the word" rapture." So the rapture is, in a sense,
a biblical word. It comes from the words "caught up." And so the
Bible is clear that we will "be caught up." And Jesus says that two
shall "be in the field. The one shall be taken, and the other left Two
women shall be grinding at the mill. The one shall be taken and the
other left" He says in Matthew 24:42 to 44,

"Watchtherefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in
what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and
would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be
ye also ready: for In such an hour as ye think not the Son of man
cometh."

So, according to this verse, it is clear that Jesus will come and rapture
or catch up, or catch away His people. "One shall be taken and the
other left," and this verse says His coming is as "a thief" [1
Thessalonians 5:2]. Now, Christians all agree that when Jesus comes
as a thief to take away His saints, that is the rapture. And He says it
will be "in such an hour as ye think not," So everyone agrees that this
is, indeed, the rapture. Right here Jesus is talking about the rapture.
Now the question we want to know is: does this rapture come before
the tribulation, in the middle of the tribulation, or after the
tribulation? Now let's see; Jesus answers it very clearly. And He also
clarifies this question of whether the rapture will be secret, You see,
some have maintained that when the rapture happens, it will be a
secret coming of Jesus in the clouds. But again, let's see what Jesus
says. Let's notice what it says in Matthew 24:21 through 31, and
verses 40 and 41,

''For then shall be great tribulation such as was not since the
beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And
except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be

Page 10
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. Then
if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe
it not. For there shall arise false Chrlsts, and false prophets, and
shall shew great signs and wonders: Insomuch that, if it were
possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you
before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is In the
desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe
it not. For as the Ughtning cometh out of the east, and shlneth
even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
For wheresoever the carcass is, there will the eagles be gathered
together." (Listen carefully, we want to know when this will happen.)
"Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be
darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall
fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be shaken: And
then shall appear the sign of the Son of man In heaven: then shall
all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man
coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And
he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet," - Paul
said, "the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout,
and with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God..• "
[1 Thessalonians 4:16] "and they shall gather together his elect from
the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Then shall
two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two
women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and
the other left. "

So, according to Jesus' teaching, it is clear that His coming to rapture

His church "as a thief in the night" happens after the tribulation.
And notice, it's not secret, because the Bible says it's like the lightning
coming "out of the easl..even unto the west" [Matthew 24:27]. And
it says that even the wicked "shall see the Son of man coming with
power and great glory." And they shall weep. In fact, Revelation 6:16
says that they shall run to the rocks and to the mountains and say,

Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sltteth on the
1~••

throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:"

You see, the Bible is clear that it won't be a secret, In fact, Revelation
1:7 says,

Page 11
The Rapture and the 1000 Years
...

"Behold, He cometh with clouds •••"

It says He's coming with clouds and "every eye shall see him- when
He comes. Remember when He left, He left with the clouds and He'
will come again "as ye have seen him go into heaven" [Acts 1:11].
When He comes again, "every eye shall see him", [Revelation 1:7].
And here it is clear that even the wicked will see the Son of man
coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Matthew
24:31 says that it is then that He sends His angels with the great sound
of a trumpet and they gather together His elect. Who are the elect?
Colossians 3:12 says that the church is "the elect of God" [the book
of Colossians is written to the church at Colosse. See Colossians 1:2].
Peter, writing to the church in 1 Peter 1:1 and 2, calls them the •elect. -
And in Romans 8:33, Paul, writing to the church at Rome says,

"Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect: ••"

Friends, the church is "the elect of God." And Jesus says that it's after
the tribulation that He sends His angels to "gather together His elect. •
It is then that "two shall be in the field, the one [shall be] taken and
the other left." And very clearly that happens, not before the
tribulation, not in the middle of the tribulation, but according to Jesus
Himself it happens after "the tribulation of those days" [Matthew
24:29]. Now we'll prove that further as we go to the book of
Revelation. Turn to Revelation 16.

We already read that Jesus made it clear that when He raptures His
church, it would be when He comes as "a thief." That's when "one
shall be taken and the other left," and everyone agrees [with that]. In
fact, there are even movies made about it. One is called "The Thief
In The Night." It's about the rapture and it's talking about Jesus
corning as a thief. We are going to read this in Revelation 16. 'This
is after the seven churches, after the seven seals, after the seven
trumpets, but we're in the time of the plagues. If you study the
chapter, the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth plague have
already been poured out. And notice what it says in Revelation 16:15,

"Behold, I come as a thlef. ••"

Page 12
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

Now notice, Jesus says,"] come as a thief: This is still in the future
tense.

'~..Blessed Is he that toatcheth, and keepetk his garments, lest he

walk naked, and they see his shame. II

So, according to Revelation 16, Jesus has not yet come as a thief until
the plagues have been poured out, After the plagues have been
poured out, we hear Him saying, "Behold, I come as a thief."

Now this will become even clearer. When does Jesus come in the
book of Revelation? We should remember that the book of Revelation
has a tendency to repeat itself. Many of the prophecies of Revelation,
like the prophecies of Daniel, are repetitive. But if you look at
Revelation 19, when does it say that the bride has made herself ready?
Let me ask you a question: who is the [symbolic] bride? The church
is the bride of Christ [Ephesians 5:23-32]. Now notice Revelation 19:7
through 9,

"Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to him: for the marriage
of the Lamb Is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And
to her was granted that she should be arrayed In fine linen, clean
and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And
he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto
the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he salth unto me, These are
the true sayings of God. ".

Now notice, friends, that He does not say that the wife, or the bride,
has made herself ready until chapter 19. The marriage supper of the
Lamb does not take place until chapter 19. That's after the seven
churches, seven seals, seven trumpets and seven plagues. And so
according to Revelation, the bride of Christ (which is the church) will
not be ready for the clean linen and the rapture until chapter 19. It
says it's at that time that "she hath made herself ready." And then
we read in Revelation 19:11,

"/ saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat
upon him was called Faithful and True, and In righteousness he
doth judge and make war."

Page 13
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

And so we see that the second coming of Jesus to receive His church
and to begin the marriage supper of the Lamb takes place in
Revelation 19. Again, it's after the tribulation. Now turn with me to
Revelation, chapter 20 and we come to this subject of the 1000 years.
It says in Revelation 20: 1 and 2,

saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the
1'[
bottomless pit and a great chain In his hand. And he laid hold on
the dragon, that old serpent, which Is the Deoll, and Satan, and
bound him a thousand years. /I

Now friends, the question we need to ask ourselves is: how does this
1000 years fit in terms of the rapture? We've already settled the
question, but we'll settle it more as we continue to go on. You'll see
that the Word of Cod will continue to confirm that the rapture is
indeed, as Jesus said, "after the tribulation of those days."

Notice, we've understood that there is a tribulation. By the way, how

long will the tribulation last? How long will the time of those plagues
last? For how long will the plagues be poured upon the earth?
There's only one text that I know of that really gives a key to
understanding that It's Revelation 18:8,

"Thereforeshall her plagues come In one day..• II

Now, obviously that's not a 24-hour day. Well then, how long is it?
We know, according to Numbers 14:34, that Cod gives each day for
a year, and Ezekiel 4:6 says,

1~ •• 1 have appointed thee each day for a year. "

We've already learned that in the 70 weeks, or the 490-day prophecy,

each of those days represents a year [see lecture number 6]. It does
make sense that these plagues would be poured out in a year's time.
Not a literal day, but it very well could be a symbolic day, or a year.
Her plagues could be poured out in a year. During that time, it is
easy to see how Cod could preserve His people. We have prophecies
like Isaiah 33:2 that clearly talk about the time of trouble. It says,

Page 14
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

"0 LORD, be gradous unto US; we have waited for thee: be thou
their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble. "

So in the time of trouble, God will be our salvation. And it says in

verse 16 of the same chapter,

"Heshall dwell on high: his place of defense shall be the munitions

of rocks: bread shall be given him; his water shall be sure. "

So the Bible promises that bread will be given to us and our water
will be sure. God will provide for His people just as He provided for
ancient Israel. When the [Egyptian] plagues were falling He kept His
people. He put a seal upon them, a mark upon them [Exodus 8:23].
And as the angels went and poured out the vials and poured out the
plagues, friends, God's people were preserved. And God promises to
preserve us. There's that wonderful Psalm that you're probably
familiar with; Psalm 91. What a Psalm of encouragement for those
who will be living during that time of trouble I And friends, we may
very well see the plagues come, even in our generation. But God
gives us good news in Psalm 91 beginning with verses 2 and 3 and 5
through 11,

'1 will say of the LORD, He is my refuge my fortress: my God; in

him willI trust Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the
fowler, from the noisome pestilence. Thou shalt not be afraid for
the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for
the pestilence that uialketh in darkness; nor for the destruction
that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and
ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the
wicked. Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge,
even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee,
neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give
his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. /I

God says that no plague shall come nigh thy dwelling. And those of
us who have kept the Word of God's patience, those of us who have
received the seal of God in our forehead [see lecture number 9], God
promises to keep. And so we will be kept

Page 15
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

We see that the tribulation will come. Oh yes, we may suffer the wrath
of man, but praise God that when those plagues begin to fall in that
last prophetic day of earth's history, God says He will keep us; and
"no plague shall come nigh thy dwelling," Then, of course, Jesus will
appear and every eye shall see Him, and we will be caught up to meet
Him in the clouds [1 Thessalonians 4:17]. Notice how Paul says this.
It will lead us right into our subject of the 1000 years. You see, when
we come to the subject of the 1000 years, there are four points that
we need to settle. And if we can clarify how the second coming of
Jesus affects these four different groups of people, then we can settle
what this earth will be like during the 1000 years.

What are the only two types of people in the world, according to God?
Do you know? The only two types of people in the world, according
to God, are the saved and the lost We can call them the righteous
and the wicked. But it means those who have accepted Christ as their
Saviour and those who haven't And so those are the only two types
of people that God recognizes: the righteous and the wicked.

Now there are two types of righteous and two types of wicked, if you
think about it There are the righteous dead and the righteous living;
the wicked dead and the wicked living. And we need to know how
the coming of Jesus affects the righteous dead and the righteous
living, the wicked dead and the wicked living. If we can determine
how the second coming of Jesus and the 1000 years affects those four
groups, then we can know how the coming of Jesus and the 1000
years affects all humanity; because all humanity is comprised in one
of those four categories - righteous dead, righteous living, wicked
dead, wicked living. Now look with me at 1 Thessalonians 4:15
through 17. These verses will answer how the second coming of Jesus
affects two groups, the righteous dead and the righteous living. It
says,

"Forthis we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which
are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent
them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from
heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the
trump of God: and the dead In Christ shall rise first: Then we
which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them

Page 16
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: so shall we ever be with
the Lord.

Now; do you mind just staying in the air for a little while there? Let's
not go any farther than that It says when the Lord comes, "the dead
in Christ shall rise first," Now, notice that he says the dead in Christ
rise first, So this must be, according to Paul, the first resurrection.
If the dead in Christ are going to rise first, then this must be the first
resurrection. And when does it happen? In the rapture. This is when
we are "caught up." This is very important because it will tell us when
the 1000 years begins. It says, according to 1 Thessalonians 4: 16 and
17, that when we are caught up, the dead in Christ rise first. And so
the first resurrection takes place at the rapture; it's at the second
coming of Jesus when He comes in the clouds. Then we will be caught
up, and the dead in Christ rise first

So we've already answered how the coming of Christ affects the

righteous dead. They are raised to life in the first resurrection and
then are "caught up" to meet Him. We, the living, are also 'caught
up." So we know that the righteous dead and the righteous living, at
the second coming of Jesus, are caught up with the Lord in the clouds.
Let's just stay in the clouds for a moment

Now turn with me to Revelation 20 and we will see how the rapture,
or the second coming, or the 1000 years affects the wicked dead. We
will also see when the lQOO years begins. Revelation 20:4 and 5,

'1saw thrones, and they sat upon them, judgment was given unto
them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the
witness of Jesus, for the word of God, and which had not
worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his
mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and
reigned with Christ a thousand years. I' (It says) 'But the rest of the
dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. ••1/

But what is this resurrection that the writer, John, just mentioned,
where he says,

'1 saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of
Jesus, for the word of God, which had not worshipped the beast,

Page 17
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

neither his Image, neither had received his marie upon their
foreheads, or In their hands; and they lived" (the Greek says they
came to life) "and reigned with Christ a thousand years."

What resurrection is that? Well, verse 5 says,

'~.. This is the first resurrection. /I

Referring to that resurrection of those souls that had been beheaded

for Jesus, those that had been persecuted and had not worshipped
the beast or his image, it says,

'~.. This Is the first resurrection. /I

So when those souls come to life, John says, "This is the first
resurrection. "

''But the rest of the dead" (meaning the wicked dead) 'lived not
again until the thousand years were finished. .. /I

So we see that the first resurrection begins the 1000 years. And
according to Paul the first resurrection takes place at the rapture
[Christ's coming], when we who are "alive and remain" shall be caught
up. It is then that "the dead in Christ rise first," And so, according
tv Paul, the first resurrection begins at the rapture. And according to
John, it is this first resurrection that begins the 1000 year reign.

So the rapture, friends, begins the millennium. When the dead in

Christ "rise first" [1 Thessalonians 4:16], that is the beginning of the
1000 year reign, for they are raised to live and to reign with Christ
1000 years. And in Revelation it is clear - Jesus comes [at this time].
In Revelation 19:11 we see the white horse coming. In Revelation 20
He binds the Devil, and the dead in Christ rise first, This is the first
resurrection and it begins the thousand years. And then it says the
"rest of the dead," (meaning the wicked dead) "lived not again until
the thousand years were finished."

So on either side of the 1000 years is a resurrection. The first

resurrection is the "resurrection unto life," and at the end of the 1000
years, there is the "resurrection unto damnation" [John 5:29].

Page 18
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

I want you to notice that in this text it is clear that the rest of the
dead "lived not again" till the 1000 years were finished [Revelation
20:5]. We've answered three of our questions now: (1) What happens
to the dead in Christ? They rise first, in the first resurrection which
begins the 1000 years, according to Paul and according to John. (2)
The living righteous, we "which are alive and remain shall be caught
up together with them in the clouds" [1 Thessalonians 4:17]. (3) Now,
the wicked dead stay dead till the end of the 1000 years. Now we
only have one more group of people that we need to know how the
rapture and the 1000 years affects. And that is the living wicked. In
other words, the wicked that are yet living when Jesus comes. How
will the second coming of Jesus affect them? Turn with me to Luke
17:26.

This, of course, is a very important question We must get an answer

to this. How does the rapture affect the wicked, who are living on
this earth at that time? When Jesus comes to rapture His saints and
the dead in Christ rise first, and that 1000 year reign begins; how does
it affect the wicked people that are living on the earth at that time?
I know you've heard many stories. There are people who think that
after the rapture there'll be seven years that will go on as normal.
Others think that after the rapture there will be three and a half years
that will go on as usual. But friends, the Bible is clear. Every time
you read about the coming of Jesus in whatever passage, it is always
on this basis. Remember Matthew 24:3, when the disciples said,

'~.. what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the
world?"

Friends, the Bible says that when Jesus comes, it's the end of the
world as we know it In fact, Jesus Himself says it at the end of almost
every gospel in the Bible. He says, in Matthew 28:20,

1~ •• lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. /I

And so according to the Bible, when Jesus comes this earth will come
to an end. Listen to what it says in Luke 17, beginning with verse
26,

Page 19
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

"as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the dags of the
Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wiDes, they
were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the
ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all; Likewise also as
it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, theg bought,
they sold, theg planted, they builded; But the same dag that Lot
went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaoen, and
destroyed them aiL Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son
of man is revealed." [Luke 17:26-30]

So you see friends, according to Jesus, when He comes the second

time (and I'll prove it's in the rapture), when He comes to rapture His
saints, it is the end of the wicked who are living on this earth. They
will not continue living for three and a half years or seven years or a
thousand years. The Bible says it will be as it was in the days of Noah;
"the flood came, and destroyed them all." As it was in the days of Lot;
fire came "and destroyed them all." And He says thus it shall be "in
the day when the Son of man is revealed.· Now, to prove that this is
at the time of the rapture, look at what it says in Luke 17:34 to 37.
This is in the context of this coming talked about in previous verses.

"Itell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one
shall be taken, and the other shall be left. Two women shall be
grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two
men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said
unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be
gathered together. "

Now do you see how this all fits together with Matthew 24? When
the Son of man comes, according to Matthew 24:27 and 28, it will be
'~.. as the lightning that cometh out of the east, and shineth even
unto the west .•.wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be
gathered together. "

What is this talk about eagles coming? Well, according to Revelation

19, it's clear that when Jesus comes to rapture His saints, in that day
when "one shall be taken and the other left," it will be the end of this
wicked world as we know it It says in Revelation 19:11 and 17 to 20,

Page 20
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

'1 saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat
upon him was called Faithful and True..•1 saw an angel standing
in the sun; he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that
fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together
unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of
kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, the
flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all
men, both free and bond, both small and great...the beast was
taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before
him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of
the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were
cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. /I

So there will be fire at the second coming of Jesus, according to this

text, And in verse 21 it says,

'itnd the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon
the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the
fowls were filled with their flesh. "

So according to the Bible, when Jesus comes, when the church is

raptured, •one shall be taken and the other left, •.not left alive but left
dead It says that "wheresoever the carcass is, there will the eagles
be gathered together! You see, friends, when Jesus appears and
speaks the word that will raise the righteous dead and "catch up"
[rapture] His saints, the wicked will not be able to stand in the day of
His appearing. And as His glory is revealed they will instantly die.
Then and there. They'll fall dead all over the earth. Now remember,
there will be a resurrection, because it says at the end of a 1000 years
they'll be raised. It says "the rest of the dead lived not again until the
thousand years were finished" [Revelation 20:5]. But when the 1000
years are finished, as John says in Revelation 20:12,

'1saw the dead, small and great, stand before God... /I

And it's at the end of the 1000 years, according to Scripture, that
there will be a general judgement We call it "the great white throne
judgement," And then, of course, they'll be judged according to the
things written in the books, and they'll be cast into the lake offlre.
Not just the beast and the false prophet, but all"those who have

Page 21
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

rebelled against God and His law. And so according to Scripture, it

is clear that when Jesus comes, it is the end of the world.

Now, this is revealed in Daniel, chapter 2. Notice how clearly this is

said. I can't believe that Christians who read their Bible would ever
get the idea that when Jesus comes the second time that life will go
on as usual. There are people who actually believe that after the
church is raptured; you still have seven years to get saved. Friends,
the Bible is clear. J.1!henJesus comes, it is too late. In fact, the minute
He leaves Heaven, He says, in Revelation 22: l1,

'~..he that is holy, let him be holy still: he that is righteous, let him
be righteous still: he that is filthy, let him be filthy still:"
[paraphrased]

The Bible is clear that we cannot be saved after Jesus comes. "Now
is the accepted time; today is the day of salvation" [2 Corinthians 6:2].

Now, who do you think would invent a doctrine that would lead people
to believe that after Jesus comes a person could still be saved? Well,
it's pretty obvious, isn't it? But Jesus knew and understood the
question that the disciples asked [in Matthew 24:3], and He answered
it correctly,

'~.. what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the
world?"

What will be the sign of the end of the world? You see, when Jesus
comes it will be like it was in the days of Noah. Friends, "the flood
came, and destroyed them all." It will be like it was in the days of
Lot, The fire fell and "destroyed them all." And so we have to be
saved before Jesus comes.

Now, notice what it says in Daniel 2:34 and 35. It's so clear,

"Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which
smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake
them to pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver,
the gold, broken to pieces together, became like the chaff of the
summer threshingfloors; the wind carried them away, that no

Page 22
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image
became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. "

Friends, according to this text it is clear that when Jesus comes, these
kingdoms of gold, of silver, of brass, of iron, of clay will be broken to
pieces together. They will become like the chaff of the summer
threshingfloors: and the wind carried them away, that no place was
found for them. One thing is clear, at the second coming of Jesus
there won't be a United Nations left for Jesus to sit and rule over.
And yet there are some people who act as though, during the 1000
years, God is going to be down here shaking hands with the President
of the United States and the Prime Minister of England and Russia,
and whatever else they envision. And they envision this great time
when God will be working it out with the nations of the earth. No,
friends. The Bible says that when Jesus comes "the stone will smite
the image" and grind it to powder and none of these kingdoms will
ever be found again in this world. The Bible is clear.

Now, somebody says, "But doesn't it say 'He's going to rule over the
nations with a rod of iron'?" Yes, He's going to rule over the nations
with a rod of iron. But what does that imply? Does that mean He's
going to rule over them for 1000 years? Not at all. Turn with me to
Psalm 2, and you'll see that the Bible makes it very clear what kind
of ruling it will be, and how long His rule will last over those nations.
Psalm 2, verses 7 and 8 say,

'1 will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art
my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, I shall give thee
the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the
earth for thy possession."

Now, when will the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son here mentioned, take
possession of this earth? At His second coming. And what will He
do then? Read it in verse 9,

"Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them
in pieces like a potter's oessel:"

So this is how He will rule with a rod of iron. It says He will break
them to pieces. That's exactly what Daniel says. When Jesus comes

Page 23
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

with that symbolic rod of iron, it will not be to sit down here and
discuss politics. It will be to put an end to the wickedness of men.
And at that moment, the Bible says, "there will be found no place for
them"[Daniel 2:35, paraphrased]. It will be like it was in the days of
Noah. Like it was in the days of Lot, The Bible is clear. This earth
will be washed clean. This time it won't be by water, but by fire. And
the Bible is clear that during that 1000 years there will not be wicked
nations living on the earth. The Bible said the wind came and carried
them all away, so that no place was found for them anymore.

Now Jeremiah 4:23 will also clarify this. Notice what it says,

'1 beheld the earth, and, 10, it was without form, and void; and the
heavens, and they had no light. "

Now, I want you to notice closely that he [Jeremiah] uses words that
make you think of Genesis 1:2. Remember when God created the
world and it was "without form and void"? Well, here he says, "I
beheld the earth, and, 10, it was without form, and void; and the
heavens, and they had no light," But is he referring here to the time
before the creation? No. He's talking about the second coming of
Jesus. After the second coming of Jesus, according to Jeremiah, the
earth will revert back to the chaotic condition in which it was before
God created it, Now here's the proof. Continue reading in Jeremiah
4:24 and 25,

'1 beheld the mountains, and, 10, they trembled, and all the hills
moved lightly. I beheld, and, 10, there was no man, and all the
birds of the heaven were fled."

Notice there were birds. There was no man left alive, but there were
birds. Remember, when Jesus comes, He will call to the birds to come
and say eat the flesh [Revelation 19:17, 18]. Back in Genesis 1:2,
when the earth was without form and void, there were no birds. Here,
when the earth is "without form and void," it does mention birds. And
then it says in verse 26,

'1 beheld, and, 10, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the
cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and
by his fierce anger. /I

Page 24
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

There's the proof that this is not Genesis 1:2. This is Revelation 20,
because it says the cities of the nations were "broken down." And
friends, those cities will be broken down when that seventh plague
falls [Revelation 16:17-21], and those hailstones, 100 pounds in
weight will decimate this planet. The cities were broken down at the
presence of the Lord. Now that word "presence" in Jeremiah's Greek
version in the Septuagint, (which is the Greek version of the Old
Testament), is the word parousia, which is the exact same word used
in Matthew 24 about the coming of the Lord [Matthew 24:3]. When
they said, "What shall be the sign of thy coming?" the word "coming"
there is parousia, the word here translated "presence. The Lord will
I

be present in the clouds. And so at His coming, in His presence, the

nations will be destroyed. It says "the cities will be broken down at
the presence of the Lord and by His fierce anger." And then it says
in Jeremiah 4, verse 27,

"Forthus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate;
yet willI not make a full end. /I

Notice those last words. It says that the whole land is going to be
desolate or empty. Yet He will not "make a full end." When will He
"make a full end" of this earth? At the end of the 1000 years. This
is the beginning of the .1000 years. At the presence of the Lord the
cities are broken down, the seven plagues destroy the cities thereof,
the wicked are dead. And that is why it says that there is "no man"
left [Jeremiah 4:25]. There is no man left on the earth because "the
dead in Christ" have risen. We who are "alive and remain" have been
caught up together with them in the clouds. We're together in the
clouds with the Lord. And the Bible says the cities are broken down.
There's no man left, and it says very clearly that the land will be
desolate. And He says, "yet will I not make a full end." According to
Revelation, John does not yet say, "I saw a new heaven and a new
earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away"
[Revelation 21:1]. He does not say that until the end of the 1000
years; however, God at the beginning of the 1000 years says yes, "the
land shall be desolate, yet will I not make a full end.'

Again, we will prove that when Jesus comes this earth will be emptied
of inhabitants. The righteous have been caught up and the wicked
living have all been killed. The wicked dead don't even rise until the

Page 25
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

end of the 1000 years. So there's no man left on the earth. Listen
to Jeremiah 25:30,

"Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say
unto them, The LORD shall roar from on high, and utter his voice
from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his
habitation; he shall give a shout .••
II

Notice that Yahweh gives the shout. The LORD gives the shout. And
yet Paul says, "the Lord Himself," (referring to Jesus) "shall descend
from heaven with a shout" [1 Thessalonians 4:16]. So it's Jesus who
gives the shout in the New Testament. But in Jeremiah, it's Jehovah
who gives the shout. Obviously, here is more proof that Jesus is
indeed the Jehovah, or LORD, that Jeremiah was referring to, who
would give the shout [see lecture number 6]. And this, of course, is
at the rapture. The LORD will give a shout at the rapture. And it says
in Jeremiah 25:30 and 31,

'~..he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all
the inhabitants of the earth. A noise shall come even to the ends
of the earth; for the LORD hath a controversy with the nations, he
will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the
sword, saith the LORD. II

How many will be left alive after this confrontation? Verse 33 says,

litheslain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the
earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be
lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon
the ground. II

What a text! Friends, it says that they'll be "dung upon the ground."
They'll be left corpses, dead upon the ground, "from one end of the
earth even unto the other." Why? Because when the Holy God
appears, sinful men cannot stand in His presence. They give up the
ghost [die].

That's why Jesus wants us to give up sin. If we cling to our sins, if

we hold on to our sins, then when Jesus comes we will die, for the
"wages of sin is death" [Romans 6:23]. And when sinfulness goes into

Page 26
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

the presence of holiness, it's like a person walking into a uranium

vault Friends, radioactivity will kill you. It's not the fault of the
uranium. It's the fault of your body. You can't take it Now you can
throw a rock in there and it's fine. But if you go into there, it will
destroy your cells. It will kill you. And God is such a holy God that
if we come before Him in our sinfulness, we will die. And so God says
to give up your sin, give up your sin. He sent Jesus to take away our
sins. 1 John 3:2 says that before Jesus comes we will become like
Him, and be transformed into His likeness, so that when He comes
"we shall be like Him for we shall see Him as He is," And that's why
it says in Revelation 19:8, that we'll have" fine linen, clean and white,"
which is the "righteousness of the saints," And I thank God we can
receive that even now.

When Jesus comes, we've got to be ready. The wicked who are not
ready will drop dead on the spot, according to 2 Thessalonians 2:8.
When the Lord appears, the man of sin will be destroyed by the
"brightness of His coming." That coming of Jesus will cause the
wicked to drop dead all over the earth. And it says they shall be "dung
upon the ground." They shall not be "gathered nor buried." In fact,
it says the birds will come and feast upon their flesh [Revelation 19:17,
18].

Friends, it is clear that there will be no one living on the earth when
[after] Jesus comes the second time. It will be like it was in the days
of Noah. They were all destroyed. And so Jesus says it will be thus
when the Son of man is revealed. This earth will have "no man,' as
Jeremiah said, no man left upon it [Jeremiah 4:25].

Turn with me to Isaiah 24: 1 and 3 to 6. Listen closely.

"Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste,
lurneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants
thereof. The land shall be utterly emptied, utterly spoiled: for the
LORD hath spoken this word. The earth mourneth and tadeth
away, the earth [world] languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty
people of the earth do languish. The earth also is defiled under
the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws,
changed the ordinance, and broken the everlasting covenant.
Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, they that dwell

Page 27
The Rapture and the 1000 Years
" .

therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are

burned, and few men left. II

Friends, we will be the "few" that are left alive [the righteous
resurrected and the living saints], The Bible says that when Jesus
comes, few will be left. And friends, only those who have kept His
laws, who have not broken the everlasting covenant, who have
accepted Jesus as their Saviour and have accepted His blood as a
covering for their sins, only they will be alive, Remember, Jesus said,

"...for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth unto
destruction, and many there be that go in thereat: But straight is
the gate, and narrow is the way, that leadeth unto lite, and few
there be that find it. [Matthew 7:13, 14]
/I

The "few...that find it" are the "few" that Isaiah said will be left alive,
but the wicked will all be dead. Now listen to how clear this is, and
it will help us understand what Revelation means when it says Satan
was bound 1000 years in the pit, because the Bible does say Satan
will be bound in the pit [Revelation 20:1·3]. What is the pit? Listen
to what Isaiah 24: 19 to 22 says,

"The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the
earth is moved exceedingly. The earth shall reel to and fro like a
drunkard, it shall be removed like a cottage; the transgression
thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish
the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the
earth upon the earth. And they shall be gathered together, as
prisoners are gathered in the pit .••"

So here's the word "pit" and it's referring to the coming of the. Lord
when the earth will be "broken down." And he specifically mentions
"the host of the high ones that are on high." Now, who are "the host
of the high ones that are on high"? I'll tell you. The "host of the high
ones that are on high" are the Devil and his angels. Paul says in
Ephesians 6:12,

''For we wrestle not against flesh and blood," (but) '~..against

spiritual wickedness in high places. /I

Page 28
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

So the "host of the high ones that are on high" are the Devil and his
angels; and the Devil and his angels, it says, shall be punished. Isaiah
24:21 says,

shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the
lilt
host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth
upon the earth. 1/

Where will Satan be bound as a prisoner? Upon the earth. Isaiah

24:22 says,

"they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the

pit. .•"

Now: how do you gather prisoners? In the South they still do it with
chains. Have you heard of chain gangs? That's how you gather
prisoners, with chains. And so Isaiah says they will be gathered
together as prisoners upon the earth and the earth will be called "the
pit." According to Revelation, Satan will be bound by a great chain.
That chain, friends, is made of chains of darkness as Jude refers to
them [Jude 1:6]. "Chains under darkness." Chains of circumstance.
And he will be bound upon this earth, and it is the earth that is called
"the pit," according to Isaiah.

Now there's another point that is very interesting on this note. And
it is that the word that Revelation uses for the words "bottomless pit"
is the word abussos or abyss. Abussos is the Greek word. And in the
Greek Old Testament, or the Septuagint, in Geneses 1:2 where it says
that "the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon
the face of the deep," the word there in the Greek Old Testament for
"deep" is the word abussos, the same word that is translated "pit" in
Revelation 20:1 to 3, referring to Satan's being bound in the pit. This
is the same word that Moses used in referring to this earth when it
was without form and void. So, very clearly when Jesus comes and
the sun is darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, [Isaiah
13:9-11], the Bible is clear; the sun will go out. This earth is going to
be dark and Satan will be bound in chains of darkness upon this earth
which will become a "pit.·

Page 29
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

'.
Now listen to Isaiah a littler further, in verse 22 [Isaiah, chapter 24J,
and this will clear up the 1000-year question.

"they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the

pit, and shall be shut up In the prison, and atter many days shall
they be visited. "

Now, friends, after how many days will they be visited? Satan will be
bound 1000 years, but it says that at the end of the 1000 years he
shall be loosed for "a little season" [Revelation 20:3J. Isaiah here is
talking about the 1000 years. He says Jesus will come, Satan will be
bound upon the earth for 1000 years, and there are the "many days."
Again, each day represents a year. And so the "many days" here are
the 1000 years of Revelation [Revelation 20:7]. It says,

'~.. and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall
they be visited. II

Now, where are we during that time? What happens to the saints?
(Remember, we've been in the clouds). But where do the saints go
during that 1000-year period? Well, Isaiah 24:23 answers,

"Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when
the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem,
and before his ancients gloriously. II

So it says here that when Satan is bound in the pit uponthe earth,
during those many days while Satan is bound, the Lord shall reign in
Mount Zion and in Jerusalem. The Lord is going to reign in Mount
Zion and in Jerusalem. So we shall reign with Him [for] 1000 years.

So there's the answer. Where are we going to reign? In Mount Zion

and in Jerusalem. Watch this! Now you have a chance to see why so
many Christians get confused. They read a text that clearly says that
we're going to reign with Him 1000 years, and here it says "the Lord
of hosts shall reign in Mount Zion, and in Jerusalem," and so they say,
"Well, there it is. We're going to reign with Jesus in Mount Zion and
in Jerusalem." And that's true. We are going to reign with Him in
Mount Zion and in Jerusalem. And they say, "Well, there it is. So
we're going to reign over there in Israel because that's where Mount

Page 30
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

Zion is and that's where Jerusalem is." Now, here's the problem,
friends. It is the same reason Christians don't understand the Bible
when it talks about the law, and they try to get rid of all the law,
including the Ten Commandments. They have a hard time with that,
so they bring back nine. They don't know whether they're coming or
going in the Bible when it talks about the law because they don't
understand that there are two laws [see lecture number 9]. You see,
unless you understand that there are two laws, then you're confused
when you read the New Testament, aren't you? It says in Matthew
5:17 and 18,

"Think not that I am come to destroy the law.•.onejot or one tittle

shall in no wise pass from the law.••/I

And then you read Paul, and he said that when Jesus came He
abolished the law [Colossians 2:14]. Well, there has to be two laws,
otherwise there is total confusion. A lot of Christians don't realize
that there is a difference between the moral law and the ceremonial
law, so they're confused. A lot of Christians don't realize that there
is the Sabbath of the Lord, the seventh day of the week that was
blessed-in Genesis; the one that will exist in the new earth, and that
Jesus said we should be concerned about, even during the tribulation.
In fact, He said in Matthew 24:20,

"But pray that your night be neither in winter, neither on the

sabbath day. II

This is the Sabbath [rest] that Paul says "rernaineth to the people of
Cod," - the seventh day. Many Christians do not understand that
there is a difference between the Sabbath of the seventh day, which
is in the Ten Commandments, and the sabbath days which were
"shadows of the things to come," which are the "sabbaths" of Israel:
Passover, Pentecost, Feast of Unleavened Bread, Day of Atonement
These were sabbaths as well [see lecture number 8]. Leviticus 23:37
and 38 makes the difference between those sabbaths. So Christians
are confused, because when they read the word "law" they don't
realize that there are two laws. When they read the word "Sabbath,"
they don't realize that there is the seventh-day Sabbath of the Ten
Commandments, and those other sabbaths of Israel. And so they're
confused when Paul says that we don't have to keep the sabbaths

Page 31
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

which were "shadows of things to come" [Colossians 2:16 and 17].

Yet he turns around and says in Hebrews 4:9,

"There remaineth therefore a rest [keeping of the sabbath] to the

people of God." [see Interlinear Bible, Hebrew. Greek. English: The
New English Bible: Ryrie Study Bible; Holy Bible: New International
Version: misc. inf. lecture number 8, p. 62]

Christians don't know whether they are coming or going, because

they don't understand that there were two laws, two [types of]
sabbaths; and for the same reason, friends, they are confused about
this verse and our reign with the Lord. They read that we are going
to reign in Jerusalem .. They read that we're going to reign in Mount
Zion. But friends, there are two Jerusalems; there are two Mount
Zions. Now I'll prove that I'll give you the verses and you can look
them up. Galatians 4:25 and 26 says,

'~..Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us
all.
II

So, according to Paul, in Galatians 4:25 and 26, there are two
Jerusalems-" Jerusalem which is now" and •Jerusalem which is above."
Furthermore, in Hebrews 12:22 it says,

"yeare come unto Mount Sion ...the heavenly Jerusalem. .. "

So there is earthly Zion, earthly Jerusalem. But then there is heavenly

Jerusalem. In fact, in Revelation 21:2, John says that at the end of
the 1000 years,

'~..I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from
God out of heaven... "

Let me ask you a question. If, at the end of the 1000 years, the New
Jerusalem comes down from heaven, then where was it during the
1000 years? In heaven, obviously. You see, it's the heavenly
Jerusalem, the heavenly Mount Zion that Isaiah is referring to (Isaiah
24:23). We will not reign on this earth with the Lord until after the
1000 years. Yes, at the end of the 1000 years the New Jerusalem

Page 32
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

descends. There will be a new heaven and a new earth and the saints
will reign on the earth. But that is after the 1000 years. During the
1000 years we will reign with Him in the heavenly Zion, in the
heavenly Jerusalem. In fact, that's clear in John 14:1 to 3,

"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in

me. In my Father's house are many mansions: If it were not so,
I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I
go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you
unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."

Now listen closely. Jesus says, "I'm going away." Where did He go?
To heaven; the "Father's house." And it was there that He said, "I'm
going to prepare a place for you." Remember, in Hebrews 11:10 God
says that Abraham "looked for a city which hath foundations, whose
builder and maker is God." And so the city that Jesus has prepared
for us is that New Jerusalem. And He says, "I'm going to go away
and I'm going to prepare it Then I'm going to come, and I'm going
to take you back to the Father's house,

"that where I am ..• "

And where is Jesus today; friends? In heaven.

'~.. there ye may be also. /I

He promises that we will reign with Him.

Now, friends, it's the marriage supper of the Lamb. You've never
heard of a fellow who marries a lady and says I'm going to take you
on a honeymoon, and then stays in the wife's home town. Would that
make sense? No. When you marry a woman and take her to be your
wife, you don't stay in her home town. You take her back to your
father's house. In fact, that was the way the ancients did it There in
the Arab lands in the time of Christ, in the Middle East, the man would
come and take the wife from her home back to his father's house.
Jesus is coming as the heavenly Bridegroom to receive us, the bride,
to Himself, and we're going to have a "marriage supper of the Lamb"
[Revelation 19:9], and we're going to go on a honeymoon. And
friends, we're not going to honeymoon in our own back yard. We've

Page 33
The Rapture and the 1000 Years
.
,"•...

seen this earth, and when Jesus comes it will be in no shape for a
honeymoon. So He's going to take us by the Milky Way. We'll see
the stars and the moon and the planets, and what a trip it will be!
And we will reign with Him in the third heaven, in that New Jerusalem,
for 1000 years. [See lecture number 11 for third heaven].

Now, at the end of that 1000 years what will happen? Turn with me
to Zechariah 14. This is another verse that confuses a lot of people
because they don't know when to place it People tell me, "But
doesn't it say that at the second coming His feet will touch the Mount
of Olives?" No, friends, it does not say that At the second coming
of Jesus, the Bible nowhere implies that His feet will touch the earth.
At His second coming, Paul says He's coming "in the clouds" [1
Thessalonians 4:17]. Jesus said that when He comes the second time
it will be "in the clouds" [Mark 14:62]. And He'll send His angels to
gather [to rapture] His saints from the earth back to heaven. And in
every place where you're talking about the second coming of Jesus,
you will find that when He comes, He comes in the clouds. He comes
in the air. Read Zechariah 14:4,

"hisfeet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives..•"

But the question is; what day is it referring to here? Is it referring to

the beginning of the 1000 years or to the end of the 1000 years?
We've got to know. But right in the text it makes it clear. Read what
it says in verse 5,

"And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of
the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall nee, as ye fled
from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah:
and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee."

Notice that when His feet stand upon the mountain, it's when He
comes with His saints. Now, at the second coming, He's coming for
His saints. But at the end of the 1000 years, we return from heaven
with Him. At the end of the 1000 years we will come with Him. Thus
the Lord God comes and all the saints with Him, according to verse
5. It's then that His feet shall stand upon the Mount of Olives. It says
in verse 9,

Page 34
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

"And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall
there be one LORD, and his name one. /I

But let me prove that this is at the end of the 1000 years, not at the
beginning. And I'll show you how I can prove that beyond a shadow
of a doubt It clearly says that "his feet shall stand in that day upon
the mount.;." Now, we want to know what day. At the beginning of
the 1000 years, or the end of the 1000 years? Well, we've already
seen that it says when He comes with His saints, which implies the
end of the 1000 years. Turn with me to the book of Nahum - Nahum
1:8. Remember that when Jesus comes the second time, at the
beginning of the 1000 years, Jeremiah says He will not make a "full
end." Remember? It says the earth shall be black, the heavens shall
be black. Yet will He not make "a full end" [Jeremiah 4:27]. So, at
the beginning of the 1000 years He doesn't make a full end, because
Satan is simply bound and it's not until the end of the 1000 years that
John says, in Revelation 21:1,

'1 saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the
first earth were passed away ..• /I

So, remember that at the beginning of the 1000 years God says,
according to Jeremiah 4:27,

I~uyet willI not make a full end. /I

Now read this in Nahum 1:8 and 9,

''But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the

place thereof, darkness shall pursue his enemies. What do you
imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction
shall not rise up the second time. II

Now, let me ask you: is Nahum 1:8 and 9 referring to the beginning
or the end of the 1000 years? It has to be the end of the 1000 years
because Nahum says that's when He "will make an utter end." Do you
follow my logic? At the second coming, Jeremiah says God will not
make "a full end." But here in Nahum, it says "he will make an utter
end." So it has to be referring to the end of the 1000 years. Now read
the whole context, then look at Nahum 1:15,

Page 35
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

"Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that brlngeth good
tidings, that publisheth peace!•.•/I

So according to Nahum, when will His feet be on the mountains?

When He "makes an utter end." It is clear that His feet will be on the
mountains at the end of the 1000 years when He will come to make
an utter end. It is then that He will come, not for His saints, but with
His saints. Never let that verse confuse you. The Bible is clear. When
He comes the second time He comes in the clouds. We are caught
up to meet Him. We reign with Him for 1000 years in heaven. At
the end of the 1000 years the New Jerusalem descends, and it is then
that He comes to make an "utter end." It is then that there will be a
great white throne judgement [Revelation 20:11, 12]. The wicked will
be judged and cast into the lake of fire. And the Bible says, in
Revelation 21: 1,

'1saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the
first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. /I

Let's go to Revelation 20 to review. Now remember, to understand

Revelation 20 you've got to understand all of Isaiah and Jeremiah and
these other prophets that we've shared with you. The reason so many
people don't understand Revelation 20 is that they don't study
Jeremiah, Isaiah, and the other prophets. But it says in Revelation 20
that Jesus will come at the beginning of the 1000 years, at the end of
the tribulation. Matthew 24:29 and 30 says, "after the tribulation of
those days" shall the Son of man come [paraphrased].

And in Revelation 19:11 we see the Son of man coming. We see the
wicked being destroyed, or killed, in verse 15. We see the birds eating
their flesh in verse 18. And verse 21 says that all the rest of them,
the remnant, were destroyed, or killed, by the sword that comes out
of His mouth. The dead in Christ have been caught up to meet Him.
It is the marriage supper of the Lamb. The living in Christ have been
caught up, or raptured. And the Bible says that at that first
resurrection of Revelation 19:5 [see Revelation 20:4-6, ed.], those who
have suffered because they wouldn't receive the mark of the beast,
or because they wouldn't follow the beast, because they loved Jesus
more than their own life, will be raised; and they will reign with Him
1000 years [Revelation 20:4]. And it even says that "judgment was

Page 36
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

given unto them." You see, 1 Corinthians 6:2 and 3 say that during
those 1000 years we will judge the world. We will judge angels.
People say, "Well, how will we judge the world or judge angels?" We'll·
judge them according to the things written in the books [Revelation
20: 12, 13]. In other words, it will be up to us to determine and
vindicate God's decision. We will be able to say, '~••just and true are
thy ways, thou King of saints. [Revelation 15:3]
/I

We will look over the history of the world and the record of the human
race, because we will be with God in that judgement as jurors on the
jury. And during those 1000 years we will reign with Him.

Now, it says that at the end of the 1000 years, of course, Satan will
be loosed out of his prison [Revelation 20:3, 7]. Why is he loosed out
of his prison? Well, because the wicked, at the end of the 1000 years,
come back to life. Remember, Revelation 20:5 says,

"therest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were
finished ... "

Well then, it implies that the moment the 1000 years ends, the moment
God's clock sounds 1000 years or more, what happens to all the
wicked dead who have ever lived upon the earth? They come to life,
and that is the second resurrection, Satan sees them, now that he is
loosed out of his prison. He can once again go and tempt the nations.
Why could he not tempt the nations during the 1000 years? Because
there were no nations to tempt, you see. He was bound by chains of
darkness, by chains of circumstance. There was no one to tempt But
at the end of the 1000 years the nations are raised and that's when
Satan goes out to deceive the nations. These nations that had been
resurrected, according to Revelation 20:8, at the end of the 1000 years
are,

'~..in the four lfuarters of the earth, Gog and Magog,...the number
of whom is as the sand of the sea. "

At that moment, of course, the New Jerusalem has been coming down
from God out of heaven [Revelation 21:2]; remember, at the end of
the 1000 years Jesus returns with the New Jerusalem. Now His feet
touch the Mount of Olives at the end of the 1000 years and the

Page 37
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

...•. .•

mountain splits to form a great valley [Zachariah 14:4]. The New

Jerusalem will settle there in the plain and that is when Satan will go
out to deceive the nations. It says he'll be "loosed for a little season"
[Revelation 20:3]. He gathers all the wicked together and they
surround the New Jerusalem that has just come down from heaven.
Notice what it says in verse 9, [Revelation 20].

"theywent up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp

of the saints about, and the beloved city ... "

John goes on to explain, in Revelation 21:2, that after the 1000 years
he saw,

'~..the holy dty, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of
heaven... "

And so you see, there's the New Jerusalem that has come down; Jesus
is with the saints; the wicked surround the city, and they attempt to
take it

Revelation 20:9 continues,

'~..fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. "

You see, it is there that Cod will judge the world, it is there that there
will be a great white throne judgement [Revelation 20: 11, 12].
Revelation 20: 12 says,

'~..the books were opened: and another book was opened..•"

And it is there and then, of course, that the wicked are judged, and
then cast into the lake of fire [Revelation 20:12-14]. But friends, in
the new earth, after the 1000 years, John says, "I saw a new heaven
and a new earth" [Revelation 21:1]. Cod will reign with His saints in
the new earth. In fact, listen to what it says in Revelation 21:3,

'1heard a great voice from heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle

of God Is with men... "

Page 38
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

Now, it is interesting that during the 1000 years we reign with Him
Notice the way the verse says it During the 1000 years we will "reign
with Him" [Revelation 20:6]. But after the 1000 years the tabernacle
of God is with men. Do you see the difference? He will be with us
after the 1000 years. He will tabernacle with men, but during the 1000
years we will reign "with Him." There is the proof, of course, that we
will return to the Father's house during the 1000 years. And it is not
until after the 1000 years that He will reign with men on the new
earth. Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world" [John 18:36].
Oh, friends, Jesus' kingdom is not of this world. We are looking for
"a new heaven and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness" [2
Peter 3:13].

And it is then and there that the lion will lie down with the Iamb. In
fact, Isaiah 65:25 proves that the lion lies down with the Iamb not
during the 1000 years, but in the new earth,

"The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw
like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. Theq shall
not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD. "

Some people think this is referring to the millennium, but it is not

In fact, if you read the context you notice that Isaiah 65: 17 says,

"For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former
shall not be remembered, nor come to mind. "

So it is when God creates the new heaven and the new earth, according
to Isaiah 65: 17 and 25, that "the wolf and the lamb shall feed together"
and "the lion shall eat straw like a bullock." That will be in the earth
made new.

And God says we'll have a house in the city. It says that "in my
Father's house are many mansions" [John 14:2] that He's gone to
prepare for us the New Jerusalem, and we'll have a city house. We'll
get the one the Lord built for us in the city, the New Jerusalem, where
there are streets of gold, but we'll also have a house in the country,
for Isaiah 65:21 says,

Page 39
The Rapture and the 1000 Years

"they will build houses, and inhabit them ...plant vineyards, and
eat the fruit of them.II

Friends, heaven will not be a boring place where we do nothing but

sit on clouds and play harps. No, according to the Word of God,
heaven will be a place where we can learn, where we can grow things
if that's our pleasure, where we can live together with people we love
and know.

Oh yes, it will be different. Mark 12:25 says that we won't marry

or give in marriage, rather we'll be like the angels. It says in
1 Corinthians 13:12 that we shall know even as we are known

"Noui we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face.•."

And so, friends, we will recognize one another and we will have the
joy of living together. We will enjoy together the things that God has
created, and what a time it will be to reign with Him! Not only during
that 1000 years in heaven, but during the ceaseless ages of eternity
in an earth made new where there will be no pain, sorrow, or crying
[Revelation 21:4]. According to Isaiah 66:23,

'~..from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come and worship
before me... "

Why not get ready for that lOOO-year reign? Why not get ready for
that new earth? Why not pray that prayer, "Lord, thy will be done on
earth as it is in heaven."
