Launching a business is a tough experience. Most of entrepreneurs start thinking on their own,
taking challenges alone. Not everybody is strong enough to accomplish this task until the end of
the project, entrepreneurs need networks. It is also financially difficult to support individually
the cost of a small company, like facilities, desktops, when a start-up is expected to grow
rapidly.
Entrepreneurs are facing a lot of obstacles. To help them to structure their ideas and benefit
from a friendly and innovative environment, co-working spaces were created in the US and exist
now in many different countries.
Co-working spaces consists in renting a desktop in an open space for a very flexible period. The
space is shared by other people coming from very different backgrounds: entrepreneurs,
associations, artists, students, researchers… The “co-workers” can interact so that everyone
brings his own talent to a project, improving the outcome. The co-working space is based on
important values: participation, sharing and open-mindedness.
The purpose of the study is to understand the concept of the co-working space, illustrated with
concrete examples. The profile of the participants will be analyzed as well as the services
proposed to them. This concept has a lot of advantages but entrepreneurs also have to deal
with major disadvantages. The study will try to provide entrepreneurs testimonies and some
success stories. But this business model is it sustainable? Are co-working spaces profitable? Is
the model-implementable to companies? We will try to answer these questions.
ABSTRACT
The new modern community consists of more freelancers, start ups and solo-
entrepreneurs, and will constitute a large amount of the total workforce in the future.
Nowadays younger generations prefer to work in places where they can find a
community of like-minded people as well as a "fun and social” workplace. This place can
be a co-working facility, which has become a part of the current sharing economy
revolution.
Bengaluru, located in Deccan region , has become a trade centre for small businesses and
IT hub , yet the city is struggling to survive due to a lack of social networks and
activities. There is an increased need for shared working spaces in order to enhance
social interaction and connect existing and emerging networks.
The aim of this thesis is to investigate a solution for achieving an extroverted and
inclusive working environment that can encourage its users to interact,

thereby creating a social platform where they quickly bounce ideas back
and forth. The intention is to combine people at different ages and background with a
common interest for sustainability and create a comfortable, homelike environment
in the workspaces to enhance work efficiency and productivity.
The Result is a design proposal for a coworking hub with flexible shared spaces for
activites such as co-working , co-creating and co-living .The aim is to provide the users
with and environment that encourages social interaction and enhance networking and
collaboration opportunities for businesses by working in close proximity to people in
other fileds that share similar values. This will contribute to a city that will be attractive
to visit, work and live in .
Research by design is mainly implemented, and problems have been tested through digital
model studies and sketching. The proposal should be seen as and example of how to
demonstrate, educate and inspire people to share, care and collaborate, in order to
generate new sustainable and innovative business ideas. Finally the concept , strategies
and design proposal could inspire other cities that are struggling with the same urban
challenge.
Barriers to coworking
Culture
Some organisations introduce coworking, but only selectively– coworking for certain
individuals, groups of individuals or departments. Allowing selected groups to work in a
more flexible setting, which is different to the rest of the organisation, may breed division
or resentment amongst staff. Organisations can also miss out on the opportunity to
translate the benefits of coworking across wider areas of the business. While it may not be
practical to extend coworking across the whole company, this needs to be carefully
managed to avoid any risk of cultural clash.

Security
Perhaps the greatest barrier to coworking is related to security. For companies dealing
with high volumes of confidential data, sharing space with external organisations or easing
the rules for using personal devices can be potentially challenging. Cyber security is a
growing strategic challenge for organisations and effective coworking solutions need to
help mitigate cyber security concerns. Premises security can be another potential
challenge. While coworking spaces are perhaps safer environments to leave equipment
unattended than your typical coffee shop, companies still risk a loss of equipment.
Effective policy frameworks and procedures can help mitigate risks, while solutions, such
as internal collaboration space or innovation hubs, substantially reduce external risks.
Motivation
Motivation can be a further barrier to the successful implementation of coworking.
Companies need to be clear about their objectives and about what creates the most value
for their organisations. Coworking which is imposed from the top down without due
consideration of the user or employee experience is unlikely to yield the benefits most
companies are seeking. By tailoring workplace solutions, companies can limit their
exposure to some of these barriers and achieve seamless integration of coworking into the
established real estate strategy
Privacy
Privacy is another frequently cited barrier to coworking. Many companies fear a loss of
intellectual property, ideas or other sensitive information. This concern can be amplified
further by the prospect of potentially sharing space with competitors. Some element of
private space or procedures around sensitive information sharing can help with risk
mitigation. However, inevitably organisations will need to adapt existing processes to
manage potential privacy risks associated with opening up their organisation to external
coworking environments.

THESIS QUESTION
How can we design for revitalization of a city outskirt that is drained out of urban life, by
focusing on co-working spaces, for a resilient socio-economic growth of bengaluru?

Aim & Purpose

Scope
The final result will consist of a buildingwith activities such as, working, and co- creating.
The co-working HUB will serve as a venue for social interaction through cooperative
collaborations, community events and room for local organizations.The design proposal is
limited to an architectural scale where the most important indoor and outdoor spaces are
investigated on a higher detail level.
The main focus is on the spatial qualities in the building, its immediate surroundings and
the working environment and interactions within it. The thesis does not focus on the
structural details, technical aspects of the building and its systems.

METHODS AND PROCESSES
METHODOLOGY
Research for design has been used to investigate the socio-economic structure of the city.
This method has also been implemented for the site analysis. The knowledge gained from
the theory part has been translated into design concept and design strategies.
In the design phase, research by design has been implemented, and problems have been
tested through digital model studies and sketching. The design proposal is further a result
of the theory part together with findings in the design phase. The proposal should be seen
as an example of how to create successful synergies that can promote co-working, and co-
creating on its best, as well as creating creative spaces and a social network, which can
encourage diverse users to meet, interact, share and exchange several resources like
materials, tools, skills, knowledge,experience, ideas and values
