Salvaro: An extraordinary delicacy

Crunchy, tasty, and so yummy oh how I love to eat salvaro everyday.

Whenever people go to a new place, one of the things they normally look for is

the delicacies offered at the place. A delicacy, as defined by the Merriam-Webster

dictionary, is “something pleasing to eat that is considered rare or luxurious.” In other

words, a delicacy is basically food items you can find in that particular place.

It is further well-known that the Filipinos are using the root crops as the main

ingredients in the foods that can bring a tastier treat. The root crop like cassava can

form many kinds of delicacies for a snack such as the cassava cakes, balls, pie,

suman, and etc. At this moment, I would like to share a food that comes from

Mindanao. It is named as “Salvaro.” This kind of treat when biting is crunchy and is

tastier.

Bucas Grande Island has a good number of delicacies visitors can taste or take

home with them. These delicacies include the sayongsong, biko, pande totoy and

among others. In addition to these delicacies, Socorro is also home to a flat, oval-

shaped cracker, the salvaro. The coconut flavor of this makes it unique compared to

the other delicacies available in this island in the middle of the archipelago.

Some areas in Mindanao like here in the Island of Bucas Grande, they have their

own version of making salvaro chips by using cassava instead of coconut as one of the

main ingredients. These salvaro served as a livelihood of many Socorronhons but this

is also the way of earning money together with the learners with those special needs

(LSEN). They also offered a salvaro using “latik”, a red-colored sugar. Through this

idea, the LSEN pupils have now their own additional income for their needs both in

school and at home..

Even with these variations, the salvaro is just one of the many unique delicacies

one can find in Socorro. So what are you waiting for? Try this unusual delicacy!
