Calculation Purpose
As soon as a compressor is tripped, its inlet and outlet SDV close and anti-surge recycle valve
opens. High pressure/High temperature hot gases reach the suction side. Both the suction and
discharge side reach a common pressure and temperature called settle-out. In case of a common
casing for two or more number of stages, after an intial settle-out of individual stages, all the
stages on the common casing reach a common or overall settle-out pressure due to leak thru
labrinth seals.

Suction side should be designed for the settle-out condition + a suitable margin. Otherwise Suction
KOD PSV will pop and close quickly - chatter and damge PSV seat and eventual PSV leaks. Suction
PAHH has no remedy in this cases. In the early stages of the project, piping run length may not be
known to determine settle-out pressure correctly. It is suggested a good margin is made in
settle-out estimate, to avoid PSV lift + damage, a problem known to operators. Some clients
require shutdown and investigation if a PSV lifts, addded cost. [Note: Leaking discharge check
valve can add more HP gas in the time taken for the discharge SDV closes!!, another known
headache.]
