that they live by. Ethics are defined as a set of moral principles or a theory or system of moral values.
Somebody who follows protocols and laws and ethical principles in society.
An ethical person is considered to be someone who can recognize or identify what is right from wrong
and always follow what he/she thinks is right. But ethics do really matter? Yes, it does. I can’t imagine
living a world without ethics, without separation of good and evil. It would be chaotic.
In the cultural diverse world we live in today, everybody has their own beliefs, principles, morals
and standards by which they practice to face on every day’s life challenges and choices. Everybody
perceives life differently. Ethics is defined as the “branch of philosophy that deals with morality. Ethics is
concerned with distinguishing between good and evil in the world, between right and wrong. But what
does it mean to be an ethical person? It has been explained from the Harvard Business review as to why
a person is biased towards others thus committing unethical practices implicitly and explicitly. But the
real question is how do we know if we are an ethical person?
Let’s assume this situation. Your employer ordered you to manipulate financial statements.
Because you believe you are an ethical person, you thought of not doing it as it violates honesty, but
your other self told you to follow the boss’ order since it makes you disloyal to your boss. So which must
prevail? Loyalty or honesty? Loyalty is important, and honesty is a virtue. However, the former should
not be used to trump other ethical values such as honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, etc. A lie begets
another lie and deceitfulness becomes the controlling behavior.
One of the predominant ethical issue in the Philippines is corruption. Politicians, who often,
when truth is exposed, run away. Sample case is the recent PHILHEALTH issue. It is unquestionable that
what they did is morally wrong and didn’t adhere to ethical standards. The citizen’s welfare must be the
paramount priority. There should have been no room for self-interest and should they commit gravely
crimes, be punished rightfully.
I believe that everybody wants to be seen as a good person, however, we are unaware of our
implicit desires and prejudices. We mistook our criticisms as an observation rather than a judgement.
We, Filipinos has always been family and friends-oriented. We try to favor our acquaintances since we
value friendship, our relationship to them. We also tend to lie or omit some part of the truth in order to
protect someone.
Bottomline, “one must not do what you do not want others done unto you” or shall I add, “ one
must do to others what you want others do unto you.” That is my philosophy in life, though I am
surrounded my toxic people, everyday I’m trying my best to treat them like how I want to be treated.
That is my own way to becoming an ethical person.
Filipinos also tend to lie or omit some part of the truth in order to protect and not hurt
someone.
What does it mean to be an ethical person? How do we know if we are an ethical person. ?
