Topic: Advantages and disadvantages of choosing vegetarianism as a lifestyle.

Vegetarianism has become a polarizing topic in today’s culture. Food preferences and food

choices differ based on a variety of personal principals. People object to eating meat out of

respect under various beliefs or personal choices due to health related motivations. There are

advantages and disadvantages of a vegetarian diet. A vegetarian diet can make people feel

better, fitter and healthier but a wrong composition of food can cause deficiency symptoms.

To begin with economic is one of the factors affected in vegetarianism as a disadvantage as

there are huge amount of cash out flow. In order to prevent nutrient deficiencies vegetarians

have to visit dieticians regularly whereby money is spent on things such as transportation,

consultation fee, paying for dietician fee whereby One must have enough knowledge on food

labels and know how to plan out meals daily to help body function a healthier way and ensure

that you are not prone to disease, infection, fatigue, and low performance and that the body is healthy

to function. [ CITATION Ame1 \l 3081 ]

In addition another disadvantage of being a vegetarian includes social disadvantage whereas

one feels the fear of not being accepted in a given situation. Vegetarians feel awkward

between non veg eaters and eating with friends in a gathering or at work is greater task. Being

at a table with all non- veg eaters and you being the only vegetarian feels like the odd one out,

many restaurants do not have much options for a vegan to choose from. Vegetarian people get

so many open ended questions as to why they are vegetarians and how they can’t eat meat

which creates an awkward moment for vegetarians.[ CITATION eRI98 \l 3081 ]

However there is another side to vegetarianism. There are advantages of vegetarianism.

Firstly the economic advantage of being a vegetarian is that non-vegetarian food no doubt are

expensive compared to vegetarian food therefore it helps save a large sum of money. Its

affordable, readily available and certain vegetables could be can be eaten raw and does not

need cooking at all which is another added advantage as no nutrients are lost in the cooking
process and is healthy to consume. A vegetarian diet provides more than ample nutrition and

helps protect from illnesses be it caused by pesticides or contaminants. [ CITATION veg \l 3081 ]

Furthermore another added advantage of choosing vegetarianism as a lifestyles is health

related, many people usually become motivated by health reasons and gradually adopt to

ethical reasons. Scientific studies have shown that people who live on a proper vegetarian diet tend

to live longer than those who eat meat. A huge study of Seventh Day Adventists who ate little or no

meat showed longevity increases of 7.28 years in men and 4.42 years in women. [ CITATION Don61 \l

3081 ] it reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases various types of cancer through a balanced meal

plan, exercise and not smoking and other health habits. [ CITATION don61 \l 3081 ]

To add on religious restrictions are also an advantage to vegetarianism as it encourages people of to

practice a healthy lifestyle. Many religious groups are forbidden to consume meat because there

culture does not allow or if they are worshipping God meat is not to be consume because they

believe that it is the way to honour God e.g Hinduism is a culture whereby worshippers are not

allowed to touch or consume meat one day prior to worship day or they would not be able to attend

the prayer session or temples likewise for other religions like Adventist and other cultures that

restrict meat consumption.

Furthermore as stated in [CITATION Don611 \l 3081 ] a vegetarian diet is a healthful way to better

serve god. It is believed that a vegetarian diet has beneficial effects on human health however when

it is not well balanced with excessive or deficient quantities of nutrients may have adverse

consequences. Cooking process also has great effects on the nutritional vegetables. One of the

biggest benefits for eating veggies raw is higher vitamin content. Some nutrients, like vitamin C,

start to break down when they're exposed to heat, or they can leach out of your veggies and into the

cooking water. Stir-frying, roasting or steaming your vegetables instead if the vegetables are hard to

consume raw may be a better method to make it edible.

To conclude the advantages outweigh the disadvantages on choosing vegetarianism as a lifestyle.

The advantages are economic, health and cultural related whereas the disadvantages are economic

and socially related. A vegetarian diet should include diverse mix of fruits, vegetables grain, healthy

fats and protein to replace the protein provided by meat in one’s diet. Vegetarians should constantly

be assessed and receive nutritional support and to monitor deficiencies. Vegetarian foods have a lot

more benefits than discussed in this essay.
