1. INTRODUCTION :-

Today as we step into 21st century the jet age of 20th century has replaced by
THOUGHT age. Now people work, move and react at the speed of thought. In this
world of deadly competition one experiences a terrific mental and physical pressure.
Today everything is so mechanical and routine that people crave for a change in
atmosphere and best way to get it is from a multiplex, that houses various form of
entertainment under one roof. A place where family get together for a day full of fun
laughter. An integrated unit where you get everything from movies to games to food
and above all great fun.
There is a need to relax, to refresh our mind and change our brain to
face the new challenges of the next day.
A need of a place to relax, entertain, to seek fulfillment of social needs
supplement the deficiency of houses and work environment is a public place. A
place where one can go out with family and friends and spend some time together
and forget all the worries about the daily life.
Such a public place consist of public gardens, community centers,
cinema halls, restaurants etc.

The measure of truly successfully urban space lies in the ability to

accommodate varying functions for different groups in the city i.e, a MULTIPLEX.
Multiplex means multiple places in one single complex i.e, multiple –
complex – multiplex.
A multiplex is lot more than a cinema halls, which are of varying sizes; it should also
include restaurant, shopping, number of cafeterias, and every form of light
entertainment under one roof. Thus one stop of entertainment centre.
Today’s multiplex offers games of all types and ranges. From virtual reality games
where the person will not be just a participant but a part of game itself. They also
video games, pool tables, music stores, jukeboxes and listening posts. Other
activities could include a full stoked bookstores, a vast greeting cards section and
outlet of popular brands. Thus a multiplex include everything to give public a true
value for time and money.

2. Aim :-
The “Multiplex” is the first such a best entertainment centre in South Asia and the
aim of this is to focus on the entertainment of persons with multiple options,
including cineplexes, restaurants, multipurpose hall, shopping plaza, play area, open
landscapes, parking, etc.

3. Objective :-
The objectives behind this thesis project and programme is to undertake an in-depth
study of the subject and thus identification of full entertainment and enjoyment to be
given to the public for their mental relaxation, pleaser and excitement.

To develop solutions for an environment that supports independent functioning of

individuals or persons with multiple interests.

4. Scope and Limitations :-

The architectural design would be prepared for the main building consisting of
Entrance Foyer, Common Atrium, Circulation area, Shops, Auditoriums, Restaurant,
Open area, parking, etc.
The design would be done with regard to Construction Details in which
drawings illustrating the concerned details would be made.
The major scope of my study would be through Primary Survey which
includes Case-studies and information of the latest public demands with other new
concepts.
The prime limitation is the lack of availability of entertainment centers as very less
work has been done especially in my home town, Varanasi, which is the place of a
very large population of tourists and local urban population.

5. Methodology :-
• Understanding the urban demands for multiplex.

• Literature Study of books relating to the subject.

• Case studies of buildings that have fulfilled the similar requirements.

• Meetings/Interviews with the urban public.

• Site Analysis

• Formulation of area requirements.

• Deriving Design guidelines

• Concept development

• Design and Planning

• Construction Details Material Specifications

6. Why a Multiplex ?
Right from our first year of college we were aware of the biggest project we
would ever do in college and that would mean our design dissertation. What the
whole issue was about we realized only when we saw for the first time the crowd of
people waiting nervously outside the jury room with their relatively large models and
wrapped up sheets. Throughout the four years we realized the work and time that
would go into this one project. Even four years seemed very less to decide on a
thesis topic, especially when we would be working so much for it, shouldn’t we be
deciding on something that would be exquisite? Even though we were aware of the
big project at the end of our years in Architecture College, when the question really
hit us, as to what topic to choose, most of us seemed to be in a fix, most of us had at
least 3-4 potential topics listed with us.

Logically speaking a topic had to be something where data would be easy to

find and a lot of creativity could be shown. Maybe something that was repeated over
the years and finding write up on it would be a piece of cake. Of course our design
then would have to be something different.

I am interested in alternative therapy and a strong believer of the same, so an

alternative entertainment centre would be good. A multiplex maybe with a difference
would be nice too, but in the end how different can different be? There were so
many topics to choose from and it just seemed a bit impossible to decide on one
thing. I guess it was more difficult because I still had not understood the way to find
a topic.

During one of our initial studio sessions, Prof. C.L.Razdan gathered us

around. I can’t remember his exact words, but he said something like, “this is your
last project at college, your own project”, “everything about this project would be
your own, your topic, your site, your views, where alone you get to choose
something, you could choose something with ready data and very standard needs
and submit it”. I guess what he meant was a topic need not only be something that
was “easy” but something that was first close to our hearts and then easy or difficult
can be dealt with at a later stage. Since this would be entirely a reflection of
ourselves, this would have to be a part of us.

The first thing that seemed to instantly come to my mind was entertainment.
My thesis guide Ar. Abhimanyu Sharma had just taught me and a group of friends a
little of multiplex. It was a very memorable experience and it left something very
deep with all of us who attended that session. I had also attended a Architect’s
meeting here at Hotel TAJ GANGES, Varanasi, along with Ar.R.C.Jain, during which
there was a conference in the hall. Contrast colours and innovative ideas had made
a permanent place in my heart. India is truly very rich in culture as well as growing
urban economy. Or was it that everyone else entertain and I was ignorant. All I knew
about Indian cinema and its large number of viewers were from what we had studied
in our society

I re-read all my cinema histories and realised that despite being born in India.
I didn’t have to look any further for a topic for my thesis; a multiplex seemed to be
that was needed here, to entertain the people of India.

I would be thankful to Prof. C.L.Razdan and Ar. Abhimanyu Sharma for

helping me choose a topic in their own ways.

During the course of my research on the topic I realised that a lot of

entertainment industry flourished in India to urban areas and most of the people who
visited these sites were totally enjoyed of the site. The point is that people are
interested enough to travel and visit a multiplex site.

I got more encouragement for this topic during the research work where
people showed interest in my work and approval of the need for a multiplex in my
hometown, Varanasi.

Only a multiplex would not be enough in today’s day, there had to be more
information, more attraction for tourists and other people. So the topic would have to
provide for tourists, and people from different age groups.

To entertain the people, a topic close to the heart and a definite reflection of
me as a person is what this topic is all about. A multiple complex in modern context
– Multipex – Continuity of virtue.

About the Site :-

• The site is located north west part of Varanasi in a densely populated and one
of the fastest developing locality of Maldahiya.

• It is 2.0 km from main railway station and located in main commercial area of
the city.

• The site measures approximately 100 m x 180 m in dimension and site area
is around 18000 sq. mts.
• The site is accessible by 24 m wide road along the front side and 14 m wide
road at the rear side.

• The site is about 3.5 km from Taj hotel and other 5 star and 3 star hotels.

• The site has very little natural vegetation over.

• The site is fairly leveled and contours are negligible.

• There is no such facility located in the radius of 4 km.
