02 The Witch of Portobello
The witch of Portobello is written by Paulo Coelho telling the story of Athena. Athena is a mysterious
woman who has in anyway affected the people she relates with. It is the story about the courage to live
with one’s true-self. It is the story that invites people to move out from their comfort zone because only in
that external zone that change can truly start to emerge.
It is really a challenging journey for Athena to get on her way. She experiences lots of struggles and yet
she still always desires to be with her true-self because she knows it’s the only way leads her to freedom.
Despite of others’ thinking on her, she live her own way, her own true self. “Don't let yourself be weighed
down by what other people think, because in a few years, in a few
decades, or in a few centuries, that way of thinking will be changed. Live now what others will only live in the
future”.
There is another good thing on the story that Athena learns to get away from her comfort zone. “Changes only
happen when we go totally against everything we're used to doing.”
The book for me is not written well. The boredom would come usually as I go along with the book. It is
not as beautiful as his other book title “The Alchemist”. Yet there are many other bigger issues that we
can explore from this book such as: The way to live with one’s true self. What about the inter-cultural, the
adaptation with the contemporary atmosphere and society? Should we be more flexible or get on our way
doing things differently. Life is about relationship. Even in the book, the author mentions on the
incredible significance of Love. Thus the level of adaptation needs to be in line with relationships as well.
There are connections. However, in a sense, the importance of love is emphasized by the author, in
another, he failed to prove the connections with the ability of adaptation. He make the two go against
each other in its stead.
