GNED 07 – CONTEMPORARY WORLD

LESSON 1: DEFINITION OF GLOBALIZATION

INTRODUCTION TO GLOBALIZATION

OVERVIEW

Over the last century, human beings have encountered many changes especially in their
social relationships and social structures. We are part of the global age. Through internet and
social media, we will be able to know what is happening and we can have connections not only
in the Philippines but also all over the world.

LET’S GET STARTED!

What is your idea about the term “globalization”? Write as many words related to
globalization as you can.

LESSON 1: DEFINITION OF GLOBALIZATION

Globalization is a concept that is not easy to define because of its shifting nature. The
meaning varies because it is complex, multifaceted and can be influenced by the people who
gives its definition.

What is globalization?

 Globalization is the set of processes by which more people become connected in more
and different ways across ever-greater distances.
 Globalization is the process by which capitalism expands across the globe as powerful
economic actors seeking profit in global markets and impose their rules everywhere, a
process often labeled “Neoliberalism.”
 Globalization is an interaction of people and primarily an economic process of integration
which has social and cultural aspects as well and consciousness across world-time and
across world-space.
 Globalization is the expansion and intensification of social relations

LESSON 1: DEFINITION OF GLOBALIZATION

The Meaning of Globalization to Different People

According to Lechner (2015), globalization means different things to different people.

 To a Korean Pentecostal missionary, it means growing opportunity to spread the faith

and convert lost souls abroad.
 To a Dominican immigrant in the United States, it means growing new roots while
staying deeply involved in the home village.
 To an Indian television viewer, it means sampling a variety of new shows, some adapted
from foreign formats.
 To a Chinese apparel worker, it means a chance to escape rural poverty by cutting
threads off designer jeans
 To an American shoe company executive, it means managing a far-flung supply chain to
get products to stores.
 To a Filipino global justice advocate, it means rules of the global game that favor the rich
North over the poor South.

Modern World-System Theory

The world system is a perspective that globalization is essentially the expansion of the
capitalist system around the globe.

The world-system analysts focused on global inequalities. Immanuel Wallerstein

proposed a three-tiered structure: the core, the periphery and the semi-periphery. Currently, the
terminology the “core” refers to the Global North and the “periphery” and “semi-periphery” refers
to the Global South. The periphery countries supply cheap labor and resources to the core
countries while the semi-peripheral states are producing both for core and periphery. Majority of
the profits are gained by the core countries. This shows unequal exchange of capital from weak
to strong political regions. The world-system perspective views the “core/periphery hierarchy as
a central structure for capitalism.”

Core

 high-income countries
 manufacturing base of the planet

Periphery

 low-income countries
 supports the wealthier countries with resources and labor

Semi-periphery

 middle-income countries
 closer ties to the global economic core

Does Globalization Make the World More Homogenous?

Globalization is the work of the Western state and has taken hold around the world; by
controlling information flows, Western media companies shape global consciousness; the
popular culture of “Mc World” is of mostly western origin. Globalization thus entails cultural
imperialism. We agree that some things become more similar around the world as globalization
proceeds.

Capitalism – is a system in which all natural resources and means of production are privately owned.

Market globalism is an idea that reflects the concepts of globalization. It seeks to endow globalization with free
market and norms and neoliberal meanings.

Neoliberalism – is in the first instance a theory of political economic practices that proposes that human well-being
can best be advanced by liberating individual entrepreneurial freedoms and skills within an institutional framework
characterized by strong private property rights, free markets and free trade.

Privatization – is the process of transferring an enterprise or industry from the public sector to the private sector.
Some of the government owned and controlled corporations in the Philippines transferred already from public to
private sector are Philippine Airlines (PAL), Philippine Long Distance Corporation (PLDT), Manila Electric Company
(MERALCO) and Manila Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) which are now MAynilad Water Services and
Manila Water Company.

LESSON 1: DEFINITION OF GLOBALIZATION

The Globalization Experience

No one experiences globalization in all its complexity but globalization is significant

insofar it reshapes the daily lives of billions of people. Increasingly, the larger world is present
locally. This obviously applies to a Ban Ki-moon (the UN secretary –general) or a Bill Gates
(founding chairman of Microsoft), conscious contributors of globalization. American textile
workers sense the global in the local through the impact of intense foreign competition and
outsourcing to overseas companies. Soccer fans regarded as routine the fact that a large
portion of the world’s population directs its attention to the World Cup every four years.
Business people travelling internationally witness globalization daily in the media offerings in
their hotel rooms. Migrants who call home, send money back, or make return visits bring a bit of
that wider world to the villages they left.
