Null Set, Cardinality of Sets, Union and Intersection
of Sets and the Difference of Two Sets

LET US KNOW

The concept of sets is used in practically all areas of mathematics. You

have been working with sets of numbers and sets of shapes and the
relationship among them. Now you will study more closely the basic ideas of
sets. (Grade 7 Mathematics Patterns and Practicalities) by: Gladys C. Nivera
(2012)

Look at the objects below.

How can you group the objects? Name each group.

How many groups can you form? Is there an object that belongs to more than
one group?

Some possible groups are as follows:

1.The toy car, toy airplane, teddy bear, and the ball belong to the group of
toys.

2. The banana, apple, mango, and oranges belong to the group of fruits.

3. The teddy bear, cap and the toy car belong to the group of red objects.

2
LET US REVIEW

Directions: Study the given sets of words. Identify which item does not
belong to the group. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

1. airplane, boat, car, kalesa, bus

2. carabao, chicken, cow, pig, goat
3. Bulacan, Pampanga, Batangas, Bataan, Tarlac
4. hexagon, quadrilateral, rectangle, rhombus, square
5. 2, 12, 24, 11, 30

LET US STUDY
A group or a well-defined collection of objects
Definition is called SET. Each object in a set is called a
member or an element of a set.

1.The toy car, toy airplane, teddy

set is said to be well-
defined if it is possible

belong to a given set.

Other examples of well-defined sets Examples of Not well-defined sets

1. Set of all multiples of 5 1. The set of friendly students in
2. Set of English alphabet your class
3. Set of all factors of 18 2. The set of good actor/actress
3. The set of beautiful flowers
Now, it is for you to find
out the difference between
well-defined sets and not
well-defined sets based on https://images.app.goo.gl/ypyTu5y5jujwRXAG8
the given examples. 3
Notation and Description of sets

There is a fairly simple notation for sets. We simply list each element
(or “member”) separated by a comma, and then put some curly brackets
around the whole thing

{4, 8, 12, …}
Element
Element Element Three dots are called an
(Ellipsis) or goes on
forever (infinite).
The curly brackets are sometimes called “set bracket” or braces.

Some More Notation In the given example we say

that 𝒂 ∈ 𝑨 read as “a is an
element of set A” and 𝒇 ∉
A = {a, b, c, d} 𝑨 read as “f is not an
element of set A”.

Additional information
In listing the elements of the
sets each distinct element is
listed once and the order of the
elements does not matter.

4
Universal Sets and Subsets

When we define a set, if we take

pieces of that set, we can form what
is called a subset

Example: The set {2,4,6,8,10}it is called the

universal set in the given set. A subset of
this is {2,4,6}. Another subset is {6,8} or
even another is {2}, { } is also a subset.
But {2,12}is not a subset, since it has an
element (12) which is not in the parent set.

Additional
Information:

In the given example assuming that set A
A={4,8,10} and B={2,4,6,8,10}. Is A a 2. The empty set is a

5
Union and Intersection of
sets
4,6
The intersection of A and B can
be shown in a Venn diagram at
the right. As the diagram shows, 1,2,3 5,7,9
4 and 6 belongs to both set A
and set B it is in the double-
shaded region

Set A Set B
Definition:
Intersection of sets
The intersection of two sets A Intersection of set A and
and B which is denoted by 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵, Set B
(read as A intersection B) means the
set of elements or elements found both
in A and B.

Think about
this
Suppose Aliyah has an apple, an orange, and a banana, and Ace has an
apple, a mango, and a pineapple.

A ={Aliyah’s fruits} B ={Ace’s fruits}

Now, If Aliyah and Ace combine their fruits, what kinds of fruits do they
have in all?

By combining the fruits, we form a union of fruits belonging to either Aliyah

or Ace or both, written 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵.
𝐴 ∪ 𝐵={apple, orange, banana, mango, pineapple}

The union of sets A and B, written as 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵, is the set of all elements that
are in A, or in B, or in both A and B.

6
Difference of two sets

A ={Aliyah’s fruit} B ={Ace’s fruits}

- =

B ={Ace’s fruits} A ={Aliyah’s fruit}

- =

In the given problem, the fruits of Aliyah that are not in Ace’s are orange and
banana. Similarly, the fruits of Ace that are not in Aliyah’s are mango and
pineapple. This is what we called the difference of two sets.

Definition:
Difference of two sets
The difference of sets A and B denoted by A – B, is defined as the
set whose elements are in A but not in B.

LET US PRACTICE

I. Directions: State whether each of the following sets is well-defined or not well-
defined sets. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

_______________1. The set of honest people.

_______________2. The set of prime numbers.
_______________3. The set of even counting numbers.
_______________4. The set of big people.
_______________5. The set of all factors of 12.

II. Directions: Perform the operations of the given sets. Write your answers on a
separate sheet of paper.
Let A ={1,2,3,4,5,6}, B={2,4,5,6}, and C={1,6,7}. Find:
1.𝐴 ∩ 𝐵
2. 𝐴 ∩ 𝐶
3. 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵
4. A – B
5. B – C

7
LET US REMEMBER

• A set may be thought of as a well-defined collection of objects.

• A set is well-defined if it is clear whether a particular object
belongs to the set.
• A universal set, denoted by U, contains all elements being
considered in a given situation.
• A set with no element is an empty set or null set.
• The cardinal number/cardinality of a set A, denoted by n(A), is
the number of elements in the set.
• Set A is a subset set B, written as 𝐴 ⊆ 𝐵, if and only if every
element in A is also an element in B.
• The intersection of sets A and B, written as 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵, is the set of
elements that are members of both A and B.
• The union of sets A and B, written as 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵, is the set of elements
that are members of A, or members of B, or members of both A
and B.
• The difference of set A and B, written as A – B, is the set of
elements in A that are not in B.
