The evils of alcoholism and drug addiction
Among the social problems of the world today, the large use of liquor and drugs play a vital role. The use of liquor and drugs makes a man forget all decency. He starts abusing and misbehaving with his elders and becomes quarrelsome. Drinking destroys the peace of the family life. So it is a great evil in the society.
A good number of people of our society are addicted to the bad habit of alcoholism. A lot of people think that drinking is part of their status. Today, even the women and children are also addicted to this evil. The families which are ruined because of drinking are increasing day by day. A household, which is the dwelling place of peace and joy, is changed into quarrel, poverty and despair. The future of the children who are brought up in this family atmosphere is spoiled. Because of their bad experience from their family, they behave in a revengeful manner towards others. They too may be led to drinking. Who is responsible for this?
Many see the cause for drinking is the financial crisis or the pressure of the problems of life or the lack of love and affection which are to be received from their dear and near ones. Those who think that by indulging in momentary pleasure, they can drown their worries are in a kind of imaginary world. Liquor is not the remedy for this. When the intoxication of the liquor is over, their worries increase further. They will not have much strength to face the problems. Since alcohol and drugs affect their brain, their retentive capacity reduces and fear increases.
Drinking is a worse slavery. It is not very easy to be freed from this. Abraham Lincoln, once the president of America said, “Whatever slavery we are freed from, drinking is the worst.” Those who are addicted to alcoholism spoil others with whom they come in contact. They desire to bring others to the same path. Therefore this kind of social evils spread very soon through one society.
The defects of alcoholism are many. In the world today, alcoholism is the main reason for the road accidents, murders and suicides. For the degradation of morality and sexual abduction are mainly due to the large use of drugs. Today, many people have the wrong notion that drinking a little is not a problem. Even some doctors also think the same. But many start their drinking habit may be because of the compulsion from their friends or to add colour to the celebrations. Again, when these friends come together, devil tempts them to do the same. When this is repeated many times, they will become addicted to alcoholism. So, like this, those who are addicted to alcoholism and drugs are increasing day by day. It is the duty of each and every one of us to make people aware of the evil effect of this, and advising and helping them to give up drinking, rather than criticising or hating them. Let us be teetotallers and fight against this social evil.
