ACTIVITY 1
LET’S MAKE A WAVE
Objective

In this activity, you will explore and explain how waves are
produced.

Materials

o Wide pan or flat-bottom basin


o Small paper boat

Procedures

1. Fill the pan with water to a depth of about 10 cm. Bring it under bright light and wait for the
water to be still.

2. Dip your finger once lightly near the center of the pan.

3. Now move your finger continuously up and down at a regular rate. Observe closely.

4. Place a paper boat near the center of the pan while you continuously move your finger up and
down the water surface near the edge.

Guide Questions:

1. What do you observe when you dipped your finger continuously up and down to the pan filled
with water?

2. Is there a transfer of energy from your finger? Explain.

3. Describe the motion of the paper boat.

4. What makes the boat move?

5. Describe the transfer of energy in this activity.

ACTIVITY 2
WHAT’S THE CHARGE!
Objectives

After performing this activity, you should be able to:

a. charge a material by friction;


b. observe the behavior of charged objects;
c. distinguish between the two types of charges; and
d. demonstrate how objects can be discharged.

Materials

o inflated balloon/smooth cellophane


o piece of fur
o wool or cotton
o pieces of paper

Procedures

1. Rub an inflated balloon/cellophane against a piece of fur, wool or cotton


of your clothes.

2. Bring the balloon/cellophane near some tiny bits of paper as a test.

3. Try charging other materials by rubbing them together. The possibilities


are limitless! As you test various pairs of materials, make a list of the
pairs that seem to work best.

Guide Questions:

1. Does the balloon/cellophane become charged?

2. What happens as you approach the pieces of paper?

3. When you rub a balloon/cellophane with fur, wool, or cloth, does the
balloon acquire a positive or negative charge?
