ENGINEERING ETHICS FROM ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE

KULLIYYAH OF ENGINEERING
INTERNATIONAL ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA
Discovery KOE 29th Nov -5th Dec 2020

1.0 INTRODUCTION

In the name of Allah The Most Compassionate, The Most Merciful. Praise be to
Allah, Lord of the universe; praise and salam upon His Final Prophet, Muhammad
(p.b.u.h.).

As the COVID-19 pandemic has affected all social activities and events around
the world starting March 2020, many countries around the world has taken a safety
measure to contain the spread of the COVID-19 by imposing lockdown in their countries
which restricted the movement of their citizens between interstate and cities, reduce
human interaction by maintaining social distancing and forcing a self-quarantine for
everyone to prevent the intensity of COVID-19 outbreak and reducing the number of
infected.

The Government of Malaysia has imposed a Movement Control Order (MCO) on

18 March 2020 to contain the virus spread from infecting more people and preventing
more death due to the disease. Universities, schools, kindergartens and all other types of
academic institutions are ordered to cease operating and continuing their learning
sessions through online class particularly for Universities. Other stores, factories, offices
and so on are required to immediately cease operating and all workers are required to
work from home. For essential business and institutions are open and operated as usual
but with restrictions and guidelines from the Ministry of Health Malaysia.

As in September and early October, IIUM has planned to make orientation named
“TaWE ‘20” for new intake students and has many programs that will be held during the
Tawe ‘20. Enginius and Kulliyyah of Engineering have decided to make an exhibition of
engineering that represents each engineering major in IIUM. The program was planned to
be held from 5 October 2020 until 9 October 2020 with safety measures and standard of
procedure provided by the Ministry of Health Malaysia.

The exhibition planned was postponed due to the rise of daily cases of COVID-19
and all face to face classes for University were shifted back to online classes until further
announcement. As a result, the exhibition program for Engineering status is unknown and
there is still no decision has been made for the exhibition.

Since there may be low possibilities of making an expo that exposes new intake
engineering students about engineering majors in IIUM, a short 5-minute video of
exposure of every engineering major in IIUM is proposed to be made and posted on
every Kulliyyah of Engineering social media to give exposure to engineering students on
each engineering major available in IIUM and what they will learn for each major.

2.0 OBJECTIVES

2.1 To give the first-year engineering students exposure to their majoring by giving
them a clearer understanding on what their majoring is and what will they learn
throughout their study in IIUM;
2.2 To provide a channel for the seniors to share their knowledge and experience to the
juniors especially the first-year students;
2.3 To promote the department-based societies as one of the students support channel;
2.4 To assist the Enginius Society (ENGINIUS XXVI) to reach first-year engineering
students during this CMCO period.

8.0 SCOPE/RISK/BENEFITS OF THE PROGRAM

Discovery KOE is a program involving all departments under the Kulliyyah of

Engineering itself. There are 8 numbers of majors that will be involved in the program
which are Mechatronic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering,
Biochemical Engineering, Material Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and
Computer and Information Engineering. This program will be a collaboration program
with the Media Bureau of Engineering Students’ Society (ENGINIUS XXVI) as the
program will reach the students through an online platform.

Narrowing down the scope of the program, the program specifically targets the
first-year students who are in need of exposure to the departments under the Kulliyyah of
Engineering which they have already chosen beforehand. However, it is undeniable that
not only the first-year students but all engineering students might also get benefits from
this program.

Looking forward to the benefits of this program, this program is credible to equip
the first-year students with deeper understandings about their major engineering courses.
Therefore, they can be well-prepared with anything related to their courses before
proceeding to their second-year studies which are the majoring studies. In addition, the
students also get to acknowledge other majoring as well. This acknowledgment can give
an opportunity to the students either to remain with their current majoring or to intend for
course exchange. Aside from that, this program is a good platform to all engineering
students to gain more information about the engineering work fields. Thus, they can
enhance their comprehension about the engineering industry and be self-assured to
involve themselves in any engineering organizations. Furthermore, a well-rounded
engineering graduate will illustrate the good performance of the university. As a result,
International Islamic University Malaysia will be recognized as an exemplary institution
by the industry.

Nevertheless, this program may contain a few risks as it is conducted on online

platforms. The possibility to reach all students to participate in the program might be low
as there is no reassurance that all of them are able to be on the platform. It is viable that
some students might not have any social media to be aware about this program. Hence,
the aim of the program to all the targeted audiences will be a fail. Another concern on this
program is, as this is not a compulsory program, it may not attract the students to
participate. Therefore, the Publication and Promotion team needs to play their role well in
order to promote and attract the targeted students.

9.0 SOCIETAL IMPACTS

Discovery KOE aims to encourage students to have a clear vision to be engineers

in different fields throughout their study. It is hoped that the students will learn seriously
in order to achieve success at the end of the study. Next, it also aims to produce engineers
who are advanced in career and profession thus able to contribute to world developments.
It is hoped that the engineering graduate from IIUM can apply the professional
engineering practice for the betterment of society. Last but not least, as engineers it is
important to help society in order to live in harmonic surroundings. Good engineer will
have a good impact on society. Therefore, it is important to the students to have a goal in
their life as the engineers.

13.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, COVID-19 has led to a new normal across the globe- a large scale
of remote work and learning. This pandemic has caused an immediate series of
transformation in different aspects of our social life including education and affects the
society regardless of class, race, or nationality. Specifically, in our case, the sudden
transfer from face-to-face induction to online induction because of the CMCO has
resulted in postponement and cancellation of programs planned by IIUM to assist the
new students. Therefore, it is hoped that by launching Discovery KOE, our main
objective which is to give the first-year engineering students exposure to their majoring
can be accomplished. We would like to express our advance appreciation to all parties
that give their support and cooperation in making this project a reality. Nevertheless, we
will always be preparing ourselves towards serving the community. May Allah S.W.T.
bestow His blessings upon those who contribute to the success of the project and bless
all of our efforts. InshaAllah.

“Indeed, as for those who have believed and done good deeds, We do not let the reward
of anyone who does a good deed go to waste”. [Quran, 18:30]
