 +Connecting a DVD or Blueray player to the Z906

To connect a DVD or Blueray player to your Z906 speakers, first choose:

 Digital connection
 Analog connection

Digital connection

The Z906 speakers have three (3) digital inputs available to connect a DVD or Blueray player for
5.1 surround sound: two (2) optical and one (1) digital coax.

To use a digital connection with your Z906 speakers:

1. Connect your DVD or Blueray player to the Z906 subwoofer using one of the three
available digital inputs.
2. Make sure your DVD or Blueray player is configured to output one of the following
digital formats:

NOTE: You may need to refer to your DVD or Blueray player support documentation for
more information.

oDolby Digital 5.1

oDTS 5.1
3. Make sure the media content audio setting is set to the desired digital format.
NOTE: If the media content doesn't have a Dolby/DTS digital output format, the Decode light
won't illuminate. If this is the case, the Z906 should default to simulate surround sound and the
light next to 3D under Stereo will be lit. If not, you can manually set this effect by pressing the
Effect button until the LED cycles to 3D.

Analog connection

If you prefer, you can connect your DVD or Blueray player to the Z906 subwoofer using an
RCA cable.

To use an analog connection with your Z906 speakers, connect your DVD or Blueray player to
Input 2 on the back of your subwoofer and select Input 2 on the Control Console.

NOTE: If either or both the DVD/Blueray player and the media you're playing aren't in a
surround sound format, the Z906 can simulate surround sound. See Knowledge Base article
23020 for more information.

 +Connecting a computer to the Z906

There are a few different ways you can connect your Z906 speakers to your computer. The
method you choose will depend on your computer's output options.

 Digital connections
 Analog connections

NOTE: Not all computer sound cards support surround sound audio. Refer to your computer's
documentation to determine whether your sound card is capable of surround sound audio output.
If not, see Knowledge Base article 23020 for how to simulate surround sound.

Digital connections

NOTE: See the Subwoofer and Control Console images below for the location of buttons and
inputs.

To use an optical connection:

1. Connect your computer sound card to one of the optical inputs on the back of your Z906
subwoofer.
2. Press the Input button on your Control Console.
3. Cycle through the selections and choose the corresponding Optical input (either Input 3
or 4).

To use a coaxial cable:

1. Connect your computer sound card to the coaxial input on the back of the Z906
subwoofer.
2. Press the Input button on the front of the Z906 Control Console.
3. Cycle through the selections and choose Input 5 (Digital Coaxial).

Analog connections

NOTE: See the Subwoofer and Control Console images below for the location of buttons and
inputs.

For 6-channel analog (6-channel direct):

1. Match the color-coded 3.5mm outputs on the back of your sound card to the
corresponding inputs on the back of your Z906 Control Console using the provided cable.
2. Press the Input button on the front of your Z906 Control Console.
3. Cycle through the selections and choose Input 1 (6-channel direct).
For 4-channel & 2-channel analog:

1. Connect your Z906 to the sound card using either the green 3.5mm input on the back of
your subwoofer or the Aux audio input on your Control Console.
2. Cycle through the selections by pressing the Input button and choose either Input 1 (6-
channel direct) or Aux depending on where you have the 3.5mm Aux audio cable
connected.

 +Connecting a game console to the Z906

To connect a game console to your Z906 speakers, first select between:

 Xbox, Xbox 360 and Playstation 2/3

 Playstation and Nintendo Wii

Xbox, Xbox 360 and Playstation 2/3

You'll use an optical connection to get surround sound from an Xbox. To connect an optical
cable to the original Xbox, you'll need to purchase an Xbox accessory called an Advanced AV
Pack. This accessory pack is not necessary for the Xbox 360.

To configure your Z906 for surround sound with these game consoles:

1. Connect the optical cable between your Z906 and the game console. (NOTE: You can
use either input 3 or 4 as they are both optical.)
2. Press the Input button on the front of the Control Console to match the optical input you
connected to your game console.

Playstation and Nintendo Wii

Both the original Playstation and Nintendo Wii use RCA connections to output audio.

To configure your Z906 for surround sound with these game consoles:

1. Connect the RCA cable between the Z906 and game console.
2. Press the Input button on the front of the Control Console until the light cycles to Input 2
(RCA).

NOTE: Even if your game console supports 5.1 surround sound, not all media content (such as
games, movies both from a DVD/Blueray and streaming from the internet) may support surround
sound. The Z906 can simulate surround sound in these cases. See Knowledge Base article
23020 for more information.

 +Verifying which digital format the Z906 is playing

The Z906 speakers can play Dolby Digital and DTS audio. The Decode LED on the Control
Console will illuminate when it is playing either one of these digital formats.

To verify which format your Z906 is playing, you'll need to check in two places:

 Audio setting for the media you're playing. For example, DVD or Bluray discs will have
an audio setting where you can verify this.
 Audio output setting for your hardware (ex. DVD or Blueray player, game console, etc.).
Refer to the support documentation for your hardware to verify how to do this.
NOTE: When the Decode LED is illuminated, the Effect settings will be locked and can't be
changed by the user. If the digital signal is not in a 5.1 format, the system defaults to the channel
settings for the audio signal. For instance, if the audio signal is for Dolby Digital 2.0, the Z906
will default to using a 2.1 channel setup.

 +Blinking lights on the Z906 Control Console

The LEDs on the Z906 react to changes in the audio signal by turning on or off. When a change
in the audio signal happens, for example, the volume is increased or decreased, the
Decode/Effect, volume level, and channel indicators may illuminate and then turn back off five
(5) seconds after the change in the audio signal is complete.

Other actions that can cause this include:

 Changing the channel on your set-top box

 Changing the input
 Muting the speaker system

Some devices you connect to your Z906 can cause this behavior as well, depending on how they
treat silence or low audio volume in a movie or music. Other devices may completely stop the
signal stream. This can cause the Z906 LEDs to turn off and then back on again once the signal
continues. This behavior is by design.

 +Configuring the Z906 for simulated surround sound

Not all audio content you play through your Z906 speakers will be in surround sound format.

Examples of content that may not be in surround sound format include some:

 Movies streamed through online streaming services

 Cable or satellite television content
 Video game content
 DVD discs

In the instances where audio content is not in surround sound format, your Z906 is actually being
streamed stereo audio content, which simulates surround sound.

Your Z906 has three (3) simulated surround sound settings:

 2.1 - Front speakers play audio. Subwoofer is active. Center and Rear speakers are off.
 4.1 - Front/Main Left audio is duplicated to the Rear Left. Front/Main Right audio is
duplicated to the Rear Right. Subwoofer is active. Center speaker is off.
 3D - Simulates a 5.1 surround sound experience. All speakers have independent content
and the subwoofer is active.
The LEDs illuminated on the Control Console will reflect which Effect is being used and which
channels are active.

NOTE: The LEDs in the above picture above are all illuminated.

 +Setting individual channel volume levels for the Z906

To customize the individual channel volume levels on your Z906:

1. Locate the Level button on your Control Console.

2. Press the Level button to cycle through each of the different channels.
3. Once you reach a channel you want to change the level for, turn the Volume knob to the
desired level.
4. Repeat the steps above to change the level for any other channel.

NOTE: The LEDs in the picture above are all illuminated.

 +Factory reset procedure for the Z906

If you experience any issues with your Z906, you may want to reset the unit back to the factory
defaults.

To reset your Z906 to the factory default settings:

1. Power your Z906 off using the Power button on the Control Console.
2. While in the "Off" state, press and hold down the Input button for eight (8) seconds.
You'll see several lights on the Control Console light up and there will be a popping
sound from the speakers.

The factory default setting are:

 Volume = 30% (3 lights around the volume knob)

 Subwoofer, Center, and Rear = 50% (5 lights around the volume knob when channels
are selected using the Level button)
 See Knowledge Base article 23022 for more information.
 Input = 1
 Stereo Effect = 3D

Once in the factory default state, the Control Console should display these settings.
