    Introduction
    Over the last 3 decades,the annual number of deaths in children less than 5 years of age, has
    decreased by almost one third. However, this reduction has not been evenly distributed
    throughout the world.Every year more than 10 million children die in developing countries,
    before they reach their fifth birthday .In mid 1990s the WHO, in collaboration with UNICF
    and many other agencies responded to this challenge by developing a strategy known as
    “IMCI, the objective of this strategy was to reduce death and frequency and severity of illness
    and disability and also to improve growth and development. This system has been adopted in
    India as IMNCI.

    IMNCI Guidelines
    Careful and systematic assessment of common symptoms and well selected clinical signs
    provide sufficient information to guide rational and effective actions.

    1. Heath problem or problems of child


    2. Severity of child’s condition
    3. Actions that can be taken to care for the child

    IMNCI Promotes
    1. Adjustment of interventions to the capacity and functions of the health system.
    2. Active involvement of the family members and community in the heath process
    because parents if correctly informed, can play an important role in improving health
    status if child.

    Essential Components of IMNCI Strategy


    a) Improvement in case management skill of heath staff through provision of locally
    adapted guidelines.
    b) Improvement in overall health system.
    c) Improvement in family and community health care practices.

    Principal of Integrated Care


    a) All sick young infants age up to 2 months must be examined for signs of “possible
    serious bacterial infection” and all children of 2 month to 5 years must be examined
    for “general danger sign” which indicate the need for immediate referral or
    hospitalization.
    b) All sick children must be routinely assessed for major symptoms, nutritional and
    immunization status, feeding problems and other problems.
    c) Only a limited number of specific clinical signs are used to diagnose the diseases.
    d) IMNCI guidelines address most common, but not all major pediatric problems.
    e) IMNCI procedures use a limited number of the essential drugs.
    f) It encourages active participation of caretakers in treatment of children.
    g) IMNCI include counseling of caretaker about home care including feeding, fluids and
    follow up.

    IMNCI Care Management Process


    1. Assess the young infant / child.
    2. Classify the illness.
    3. Identify the treatment.
    4. Treat the young infant / child.
    5. Counsel the mother.
    6. Provide follow up care.
