fourth were Salvador and Gualberto. T heir mediocre living was not a hindrance for Manuel to
attain his dreams especially in literature.

Leon Brought Home a Wife (And Other Stories) published by Philippine Book Guild in 1940.
These stories were written when he was 22-29 years old. This collection of stories won first
prize in short story category during the first Commonwealth Literary Contest in 1940.

of the country and led a division of the Marking's Guerillas. He was captured by the Japanese

Maria, from Manila, is a woman of sympathy. She is committed to Leon even though
she is worried that Leon 's family would accept her in spite of her social status, knowing that
Leon and his family live in a rural area of La Union. They even tested Maria to see whether
she was worth being the wife of Leon. It is somehow a revised version of his life that links this
to the life of the author, where he, from La Union, went to Manila and married a girl named
Lydia Villanueva.. Arguilla, just like Maria, was concerned if he would be accepted by Lydia's
family.
It reflects the culture of Ilocanos for being simple, hardworking, and have high
respects to their parents. It shows that parents are very hard to impress as well as getting
their trust. One should prove their worth if you want your parents to have a permission to
marry your chosen loved one. Another value within the story is living a life of contentment.
Ilocanos are well known to be simple yet they are contented for what they have. They are
happy with small things and appreciate what they have and how they live life.
The name of the main character, Leon, could have been taken from the author’s
name, Manuel. It could also simply mean Noel spelled backwards. The story mentioned that
Leon and Maria had lived in Ermita, Manila. Because of this, Maria may refers to Lydia
because she and Manuel lived in the same place.
