Objective :
To determine the grain size distribution curve of a sand sample by which sand can
be classified and their engineering properties assessed ,This test is that it
performed to determine the percentage of different grain sizes contained with in a
sand .
Introduction :
A sieve analysis (or gradation test) is a practice or procedure used (commonly
used in Civil Engineering) to assess the particle size distribution (also called
gradation) of a granular material. The size distribution is often of critical
importance to the way the material performs in use .sieve analysis can be
performed on any type of non-organic or organic granular materials including
sands, crushed rock, clays, granite, feldspars, coal, soil, a wide range of
manufactured powders, grain and seeds, down to a minimum size depending on
the exact method. Being such a simple technique of particle sizing, it is probably
the most common used in practice .
Procedure :
In our experiment we have six Sieve analysis, or we have been recorded weight of
all empty clean sieves and recorded weight of dry sand , it must be All sieves
should be clean before operation , the dry sand had been putted in the sieve and
sieve was covered by cap ,the stack of sieve had been placed in the mechanical
shaker and had been shacked for 10 min ,the stack of sieve had been removed
from the mechanical shaker and the weight of all sieve with it is retained soil had
been recorded carefully . And with not forget the weight of pan with its retained
sand .

We conclude that sieve analysis is Test shows that the distribution of
grain sizes effects the properties of sand and this sieve
analysis procedure can be used by people who are working in the
laboratory like government laboratory and private independent
laboratory, The error in this test was if the sieves weighted before
cleaning it , or The result of the test was fault, because the correct
weight of sand was not used in this test.in the test we classifying the
sand very easy by the test and we can say this test is very important
and facilitates our work at the building and another areas of building.
in this experiment we know how the grain size analysis used to
identification and classification of sand ,and how determine the present
retained and present passing .
