Chapter 6 Linear Equation
Exercise
Solve the following linear equations.
(a) 4x – 1 = 11 (b) -1 + 5y = 14
4
(d) – 10 = 6
m x
(c) +3=9

x+ 8 3+5 a
(e) =7 (f) =9

(g) 4(h-1) = 8h (h) 4x – 5 = -3x + 8
2(m−1) 4k
(i) + 4 = 10 (j) 4 - + k = 10

From 1 2 - 1 => 7g = 7
x = 12 - y 3 g=1
Substitute y = 2 into 3
x = 12 – y
x = 12 – 2
x = 10
(a) 4x – y = 6 (b) y = x +2
5x + 2y = 1 2x + y = 11
(c) 5a + 2b = 9 (d) x – 2y = 6
3a – 2b = 15 2x 5y

(e) 2h + 3k = 16 y+ 2 z
3h – k = 2 (f) =4

Simultaneous Linear Equation (Graphical method)
Example
Solve the following simultaneous linear equations
2x + y = 3 1
x–3=y 2
From 1 y
x 0 2
y 3 -1
4
when x = 0, 2(0) + y = 3 3
y=3 2
1
when x = 2, 2(2) + y = 3 x
4+y=3 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
y=3–4 -1
y = -1 -2
(0, 3) ,(2, -1)
From 2
x 0 3
y -3 0
Answer: x=2
y = -1
When x = 0, 0 – 3 = y
y = -3
When x = 3, 3 – 3 = y
y=0
(0, -3) , (3,0)
Ans: (x = -1, y = 2)

2. The sum of two numbers is 64. If 5 is subtracted from each number, the bigger number
becomes twice the smaller number. What is the difference between these two numbers?
(ans: 18)
3. The average age of Mrs Hong and her daughter is 30 years. Now, the age of Mrs Hong is
three times the age of her daughter. In how many years’ time she will be twice as old as her
daughter.
(ans: 15 years)
4. Tan and Lee are comparing the number of keys on their keychains. If Lee has 4 more keys on
their keychain than Tan, and two of them have 18 keys combined, how many keys does Tan
has?
(ans: 7)
5. Tickets for a play were RM2 for each child and RM4 for each adult. At one showing of the
play, one adult brought 4 children anf the remaining adult brought 2 children each. The total
tickets sale from the children and adult were RM60. How many children and adults attended
the play?
