COMMUNICATION:
Communication can be defined as:
“Whenever the behavior of one individual (the sender) influences the behavior of another (the receiver),
behavior can be defined as communicative to the extent that it reduces uncertainty in the behavior of another”.
Another definition can be “A process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a
common system of symbols, signs, or behavior, also techniques for expressing ideas effectively in speech or in
writing”.
There are many other definitions of communications available in different ways.
VERBAL COMMUNICATION:
Verbal communication is the one that uses words, either written or spoken. It is opposite to non-verbal
communication, which includes wink of eye, hand gestures etc. But verbal communications can be a mixture of
both which is quite more effective, (say) speaking while aiding your words with hand gestures and body
language really has a very positive effect over the audience. "Verbal" is generally perceived as of oral but the
word oral should be used in that context to avoid miss conception.
Generally speaking let’s say you are talking to a person who gives no facial expressions while he talks, it is
obvious that either you will get bored or his words will have no emotional and spiritual effect on you, further-
more you would never want to talk to such a person again hence we can say that it is actually the combination
of verbal and non-verbal communications that make a good communicator.
The best communicators are sensitive to the power of emotions and thoughts communicated non-verbally. This
is why it is very crucial to be able to read the non-verbal cues given to you from the person you are interacting
with.
For effective and meaningful communication about emotions, these three parts of the message need to support
each other - they have to be “congruent”. In case of any incongruence, the receiver of the message might be
irritated by two messages coming from two different channels, giving cues in two different directions.

Verbal: “I do not have any problem with you!”
Non-verbal: avoiding eye-contact, looks anxious, has a closed body language.
It becomes more likely that the receiver will trust the predominant form of communication, which to
Mehrabian’s findings is non-verbal (38% + 55%), rather than the meaning of the words (7%).
The goal is to be a skilled reader of non-verbal cues to the point that everyone you meet is an easy to read for
you. With that goal in mind we need to recognize that people communicate on many levels. We need to watch

for their facial expression, eye contact, posture, hand and feet movements, body movement, and placement.
