EXPERIMENT 2
Results
1. Draw the truss and indicate the loaded joint.
2. Calculate the average force in each member for each load increment.
Remember to subtract the initial reading from the data acquired for each load
increment.
3. Fill the results in Table 1.
4. Plot the graph of forces in the members verses the applied load for the
experimental and theoretical case.
5. Determine the percentage error by calculating the slope of each graph.

EAT 251_Structural Theory
1. Draw the shape of the portal frame under test and give the important
dimensions. Indicate the position where the frame is loaded.
2. Calculate the stiffness (i.e the load per unit deflection, W / δ) of the frame at
the point of loading
3. Using the data in the Table above, draw the graph of load verses
displacement at the roller support. Draw the best fit curve through the
plotted points.
4. From the graph determine the stiffness of the frame at the point of loading.
5. Plot the graph of load position against displacement
1.0 DISCUSSION
1. From the result of this experiment, deduce the relationship between load
and displacement at the roller.
2. If aluminum were used how does this effect the displacement. Give your
results in terms of % increase or decrease.
3. Describe briefly the effect of load position on the roller displacement.
4. Comment on the accuracy of the experimental results.
5. List the probable factors that affects the accuracy of the results and steps to
be taken to overcome it.
