Sims explores the racial and gender experiences throughout just the Chapter 1 of the book

Women of Blaxploitation. During this time period of the 70s Blaxploitation was a genre of film
that made it so African Americans were able to express themselves and show their true colors
rather than what the whites were making movies about. This book on the other hand opened up
the opportunity for African American women during this time period to pave a way for
themselves and make a “name” to change their standards that society had put on them. The
typical role of women was three different types. The heroine, the honey or the ho and I think just
by those names you can tell what is meant. The heroine was the main character that was a
woman fighting crime and being the hero throughout the film. The honey was where the woman
in the film was the wife of the main character of the film and then the ho was when the main
character was having an affair with a woman. The role was mostly positive and had some
attributes to the film but on the other hand if the woman was the ho in the film they were not
much of an attribute to the film they were kind of just there. I would say that women during this
time played a role of almost being an accessory in most films. I feel as though most
Blaxploitation films really had main characters that were males so they were not always the
heroine in the film. Women of Blaxploitation shows though that women during this time and for
this specific genre opened up many opportunities for other women.
Throughout the film of SuperFly the whole movie is about how the characters are being
motivated by the drug dealing game and specifically the dealing of cocaine. Although Priest is
really trying to redirect and get out of the game of crime he still was involved and everyone
surrounding him is motivated by that. Dreams play a huge role throughout the film in terms that
Priest has dreams of having a better life for himself! The life of being involved in drugs and
crime is not for him anymore and he wants better. After realizing this it turns his whole life
completely around. Now Priest ends his love affair because it is not what he wants anymore as
well as he completely gives up the drug ring after one final task. I feel as though Priest’s dreams
are what completely navigated him to choose a different path for him and his love Georgia.
Throughout the film the characters emotions truly display the states that they are in
currently. When it comes to Priest he doesn’t want to be in the drug game anymore of selling
cocaine and that shows through him not budging on what he wants to do. When it comes to
Eddie he isn’t ready to leave this lifestyle and it truly shows through him being so stubborn with
Priest in not doing this final task. He also ends up snitching on Priest to the policemen about his
plan in order to get Priest in trouble. That shows the audience completely his emotions and
feelings that he does not care about Priest and just cares about the money strictly. Then on
another hand there is Georgia who is showing the emotions of wanting Priest to not be involved
in all of this because she hates the life of crime, although she loves Priest she wants him to give
this up and is happy when she finally hears that he is. The emotions of the characters truly do
show you the states that they’re in and what they want.
