PROBLEM 2

Design a lag-lead compensator for the system shown below. The system will operate with 15% overshoot and 3-fold
reduction in settling time and 8-fold reduction in steady-state-error. Also fill-in the blanks.

K
( s+ 4 )( s+ 8 )

Outlined is the steps you need to take to design the lag-lead compensator. Be complete in your solution.
a) Step 1: Evaluate the performance of the uncompensated system to determine how much improvement in
transient response is required.
a. Draw the detailed root locus of the uncompensated system together with the ray from the origin
representing the poles with 15% OS.
b. Obtain the closed-loop poles of the uncompensated system with 15% OS.
c. Obtain the gain, K o , for the uncompensated system with 15% OS.
b) Step 2: Design the lead compensator to meet the transient response specifications. The design includes the
zero location, pole location, and the loop gain.
a. What will be the closed-loop poles of the lead compensated system?
b. With -20 as the lead compensator zero - Obtain the pole of the lead compensator.
c. Give the open-loop transfer function of the lead compensated system. (Ignore the imaginary part.)
d. Draw the lead-compensated system root locus together with the ray from the origin representing the
poles with 15% OS and the closed-loop pole of the lead compensated system.
c) Step 3: S_______ the system to be sure all requirements have been met.
d) Step 4: R_______ if the simulation shows that requirements have not been met.
e) Step 5: Evaluate the steady-state error performance for the lead-compensated system to determine how much
more improvement in steady-state error is required.
a. Did the steady state error improved or worsen after the addition of lead compensation? By how much
factor? (Show your solutions.)
b. By how much factor should the lead compensated system’s error needed be improved to achieve an 8-
fold reduction of steady-state error of the original uncompensated system?
f) Step 6: Design the lag compensator to yield the required steady-state error.
a. Obtain the lag compensator pole and zero.
b. Obtain the lag-lead-compensated system’s open loop transfer function.
c. Draw the block diagram of the lag-lead-compensated system. Complete all labels, signals, parts of the
block diagram.
g) Step 7: S_______ the system to be sure all requirements have been met.
h) Step 8: R_______ if the simulation shows that requirements have not been met.
