What To Do For A Successful Interview
What To Do For A Successful Interview
Do’s
1. Make sure you completely research the property and location in advance. Do not just check
the official website but Google the property and go to reservation websites to see the
reviews. This and number 9 are the two most important suggestions! The establishment
wants to see that the position was important enough for you to learn about the property.
2. During the interview, find ways of showing others that you have done your research by
mentioning facts about them.
3. Read over your application letter and CV again before you have your interview, you should
not be surprised if they ask you questions about your past jobs. Have it in front of you.
4. Always make sure you are completely awake and full of energy. Remember in most cases
you will get the job not so much by what you know but your personality and how fast you
can think on your feet.
5. Let them know you are a team player and that you are willing to do what it takes to help the
hotel.
6. Think of a scenario where you had to solve a problem and what you did to fix it within the
work place. (This is a very popular question).
7. Think of a reason why you would be good for this particular hotel and why you want to be
there. (This is probably the most asked question “Why should we hire you?”). Show them
your passion!
8. Make sure you ask as many questions as you need to make sure you are comfortable with
what you will be doing. This is your chance to find out more information. It might be the only
chance you have.
9. BE HAPPY. Once again in the hospitality business it is all about the personality. We have
been told many times by hotels that they prefer a bright person with a great personality even
if they do not have the education because they can always train a bright person in the
technical side but they can not teach a person to be happy and friendly. Take initiative and
remember:
10. Always write an email thanking them for the opportunity to interview. Make sure you tell
them how much you enjoyed it, if you did, and how you look forward to a positive response.
Don’ts
1. Do not ask about salary or compensation. A property wants to know that your
passion is based around the industry and the hotel and not the money. Remember
that we are here to get you the best stipend possible.
2. Do not interrupt the interviewer; wait until he/she finishes his/her question before
answering.
3. Do not say yes to questions if you did not understand them. Ask for them to be
repeated but keep in mind they will most likely be repeated the same way so
listen carefully.
4. Do not ask about housing or any other benefits. You will be coming and getting
paid the same as any regular employee, which means you will not get these types
of benefits.
5. Do not ask to stay in the hotel for any period of time when you arrive. This is our
job to see if they will do it and we do not want them to think you expect to be
treated better than others.
6. Do not keep quiet. They want to know that you are a person that can
communicate with people and if they think you are afraid to talk this will not be
good as they will be afraid you will be that way with the guests.
7. Do not ask when you will be a manager. It is good to say that this is your goal
someday but do not make them feel this is what will be required. Remember this
is about an internship or management training but that does not mean
management positions will be guaranteed. Once you arrive if it is possible your
performance will dictate your advancement.
