Career in Nursing
(1)Neonatal Nurses work with newborn babies who are born sick or prematurely. Often,
premature infants have breathing problems which can be life-threatening if they are not treated
promptly and monitored. Also, ill babies must be fed in a spesialised way in a hygienic
environment that is warm. These patients have a wide range of physical and mental health
conditions so (2) Learning disabilities nurses work with (3) Mental Health Nurses face a
complex and difficult area, working with GPs, psychiatrists and psychologists to care for patients
with mental illness. Conditions range from personality and psychological disorders to neuroses
and psychoses.
The (4)Paediatric Nurses faces a wide range of situations, including babies with heart
complications, teenagers with broken limbs and child protection. Health problems can affect a
child’s development socially and educationally so the nurse’s role is very important. (5) Adult
Nurses work with adults with diverse health conditions. They work in hospitals, clinics or the
community. Many patients are elderly, others have disabilities or have a terminal illness so it
may involve shift work to provide 24-hour care. (6) Midwives are spesialises nurses who assist
mothers and newborn babies during and after the birth. They give advice on hygiene,
breastfeeding and the post-natal well-being of the mother and baby. They work both in hospitals
and in the community.
(7) School Nurses usually work for the national health service (NHS) or schools. They provide
health and sex education in schools, carry out developmental sreening (testing all the students)
and administer immunisation programmes. (8) Theatre Nurses are qualified nurses that have
completed additional training to care for patients of all ages at the different stage surgery. Based
in
hospital, they work in operating theatres, anaesthetic/recovery areas and on specialised wards.

Patient: Oh, Janet. It’s so painful. I know they said I was ready
to leave hospital

Nurse : I can see how you might think that. Unfortunately, shoulder
operations take a long time to heal. Can you tell me how painful

is the worst pain you can imagine.
Patient: Yes, I remember the pain scale. They use it all the time in hospital.
It’s a 7 this morning. No, actually it’s an 8. I never know what
the difference is.
Nurse : Well, if the (4) Pain stops you from moving around then it’s
severe pain. It’s different for everyone but severe pain is
anything between 7 and 10. What does the pain feel like?
Patient: It seems to (5) Ache most of the time. It’s a really sharp pain
when I try to lift my arm.
Nurse : Are you able to do (6) Exercise the physiotherapist gave you?
Patient: No, I can’t do them. I try to but I can’t manage. It’s too painful.
Nurse : Are you taking your painkillers before you do the exercise?
Patient: No, I don’t want to take too many painkillers. It’s not good for you.
Nurse : I understand your concerns but the thing is that shoulder
operations are very painful. But it’s also very important that you
do your exercises, so your shoulder doesn’t become too stiff.
Patient: Oh yes, I think that the (7) Physiotherapist mentioned that to me.
I really try to do them but it hurts a lot.
Nurse : Yes it is quite difficult at first. That’s why it’s important not to miss
