1. With the wheel off the ground and the inspection covers removed, turn the cam adjusters so that a 0.006-inch feeler gauge is a snug fit
between the upper end (toe) of each brakeshoe lining and drum.
2. Turn the anchor bolts (bottom bolts) inward (towards axle) to decrease the clearance between the lower end (heel) of the brakeshoe
lining and the drum to 0.006-inch. This will cause the brakeshoe to move down and out, increasing the clearance at the toe of the lining
to approximately 0.012-inch, resulting in proper centralization of the brakeshoe.
3. Hold the achor bolts and tighten both anchor bolt nuts to 90-110 pound-feet torque after completing the adjustment.
FFPW Inside diameter of new brake drum is 14.155 to 14.165, max wear limit is 14.220

NOTES! Common Parts by Part Number. See Vintage Power Wagons for further interchange information)
The MSU-3 (rear mounted) is identical to the MU-2 except that the angle of the input drive shaft is straight-on rather than at the angle
necessary from the PTO to make the MU-2 work on the front bumper. All internal componants should be the same except where this angle is
concerned.

WINDSHIELD FRAME
Windshield Frame Disassembly
1. Use a 1/16th drill for a pilot hole (no deeper than 5/16);

RADIATOR CAPS
These are the various caps used on MV & PW Dodge Trucks since 01/01/40 through the fifties. The third cap for a radiator with a 1-1/4 deep
filler neck is the only non-standard cap used. The later 3/4 ton radiator corrected the problem and the fourth cap become the standard
interchangeable cap except for the early 3/4 ton:
Cap CC#927692 will work with all 1/2 ton's and later 3/4 ton's. The gasket fits in the bottom of the filler neck and is separate from the
cap unless stated.

GAS TANK
Bill Hirsch Automotive, 396 Littleton Ave., Newark, NJ. 1-800-828-2061. His gas tank sealer is approved for automotive as well as aircraft.
It's resistant to all fuels, even the oxygenated stuff in CA. The one to use is the Alcohol resistant sealer, product# GTS-05. You'll only
need a quart to do the job on an 18-gallon tank. Don't have your tank hot dipped. The chemicals will eat off the inside OEM coating,
instead use his Gas Tank Etch product# TE-01 for preparing the tank for the coating. You'll need some tennis balls with duck tape to seal
the holes once the sealer is inside for sloshing around.

GROUNDED FIELD CIRCUIT - Disconnect the "F" terminal wire from the regulator. This opens the field circuit and the output should normally
drop to zero.
If the output does not drop to zero, the generator field circuit is grounded either inside the generator frame or the wiring harness. To
determine where the ground is, remove the lead from the generator field terminal. If the output fails to drop to zero, the field coils are
grounded. If the output drops off, the ground is in the wiring harness.

OPERATING SPECIFICATIONS
Ignition Timing - 2 Degrees BTDC
Firing Order - 153624
Distributor Rotation is clockwise. To retard timing, turn distributor clockwise, counter clockwise to advance timing.
1. Using a test light, place one lead wire on the "AM" terminal of the ignition switch and the other lead wire to ground - no light - bad
wire or connection at ammeter. Clean/replace, retest.
2. Turn on ignition switch for remainder of testing in steps 2-7. Using a test light, place one lead wire on the “I” or "IG" terminal of
the ignition switch and the other lead wire to ground - no light - bad switch. Replace ignition switch.
3. Using a test light, place one lead wire on the "-" or “+“ terminal of the coil depending if you have a 6V or 12V system and the other
lead wire to ground - no light - bad wire or connection at the “I” or "IG" terminal of the ignition switch. Clean/replace, retest.
4. Using a test light, place one lead wire on the "+" or “-“, terminal of the coil, depending if you have a 6V or 12V system, and the other
lead wire to ground - no light - bad coil. Replace coil.
5. Using a test light, place one lead wire on the distributor terminal and the other lead wire to ground - no light - bad wire or
connection.
Clean/replace, retest.
6. With the distributor points open, using a test light, place one lead wire on the arm of the point and the other lead wire to ground - no
light – grounded terminal in distributor. Clean/replace insulation material, retest.
7. With the distributor points closed, and a thick piece of paper between the points, using a test light, place one lead wire on the arm of
the point and the other lead wire to ground - if light – bad points. Replace points and condenser.
As a general rule, the best fuel economy is found running a engine at 65-85% of the max.hp rated RPMs which is usually around 3600 rpms for

Rebuilt ----------------------------------- NAPA# 483610, AutoZone# 30-3610 (Core Charge) [The distributor is for a 225 engine. You
have to use some parts off the 230 to use the 225 distributor in the 230 engine]
Conversion - All of the internal parts of the 230 distributor will drop right into the 225 housing. The most difficult task will be to take
off the internal snap ring inside the shaft under the rotor cap. The 225 housing will need to be machined down about 1/32 of an inch in
order for it to fit into the 230 block hole. You can have this done at a local machine shop, or do it with shop cloth using the "shoe
shine" method of sanding. You will need to also swap the 230 clamp to the 225 distributor. You can now convert this distributor to an
electronic with parts from an appropriate vehicle or a Mopar Performance kit.

When replacing a distributor, do the timing off the number "1" cylinder by water pump. There are markings on the crankshaft pulley and an
arrow off the timing chain cover to time it properly (TDC). Align the pulley’s “0” or longest center tick mark with the end point of the
arrow. If you look at the bottom of the cap, you will see the raised notch. Rotate that notch to 6 o'clock. Count two posts clockwise,
the second post is for the number one spark plug wire. Position your distributor to line up with the second post. Firing order is
1-5-3-6-2-4. After you start the engine, time it to 2 degrees ATDC (after top dead center) by using a timing light or a radio.
Radio – Rotate the engine to 2 degrees ATDC. Tune your radio to a blank channel where you hear only noise. Place the radio close to the
distributor; rotate the distributor until you hear a pop. That will be the points opening and you will be timed. Lock the distributor.

OPERATING SPECIFICATIONS
Normal Oil Pressure at 30 mph = 30-45 lbs.
Symptoms - Low oil pressure usually due to worn main/rod/cam bearings.
For those of you that may need to replace your muffler with an inexpensive muffler that is norrow and a bolt on application, here are the
part#'s for Kragen
Overall length of the muffler is 22 inches and slips right over the stock exhaust pipe. Adapter/Flange is about a 70 degree angle so you can
direct the exhaust towards the side of the truck. Use high temp silicone seal for exhaust systems to coat inside of muffler/outside of
exhaust pipe. This prevents the two from rusting together for easy take off later. Truck has a nice sound with this application.

Motor Mite # 03154 & Pioneer # CA3016 both work. 100 inchs long.
The key point is to get your front end nice and tight and remove all the slop from the system. Obviously your tires need to be balanced and
somewhat true. Even with well balanced tires if the front end has sloppy imperfections, the road can set up a shimmy/vibration in the front
end which you will feel.
Trucks with the 4.89's came with the the smaller 7.50 tires AND the narrow 5.5" wheels. The wheels make the easiest quick visual reference,
http://www.dodgepowerwagon.com/glovebox/vaughn.txt 25/26
8/13/2017 www.dodgepowerwagon.com/glovebox/vaughn.txt
as there is about 1" of brake drum showing towards the inside when you look at them head on. The trucks with 5.83's came with 9.00 tires on
the wider 6.5 wheels, and they just about cover the brake drum completely when viewed head on. This is not a positive identification of the
gears in the axles, but can be used as a quick reference.
