New Milford High School
At New Milford High School, we recognize the importance of educating the whole child. As such, social-emotional
learning represents an essential component in providing a balanced education and preparing our students to meet the
demands of college and career in a rapidly and ever evolving society. Research shows that social-emotional learning
is critical to learning academic content knowledge, as well as acquisition of interpersonal and self-regulation skills
necessary to succeed in college and/or career.
We are excited to announce that this year we will begin a partnership with Dylan’s Wings of Change to bring the
Wingman Program to New Milford High School. The Wingman program is a grass roots, student led program that is
based on and evolves with the needs of students, the school, and the community. Wingman is a unique youth
leadership program that not only helps students realize the connections that exist between peers, but also develops
social and emotional skills through team bonding and trust building activities. In fact, Wingman builds on the
foundation of skills introduced and explored in grades K-8 through the Choose Love program. Wingman inspires
children to be more empathetic, courageous and inclusive through on-going student-led activities aimed at building
community, increasing empathy and accepting differences. This program is year round and will include the entire
school community. Additionally, this program allows us to better utilize our students as leaders in the school and
larger community, while examining and working collectively to improve school climate and culture.
We understand the importance of social-emotional learning and taking steps to ensure that our school and community
are a welcoming place for everyone. With this in mind, we will be introducing Wingman via presentations by Ian
Hockley, Executive Director of Dylan’s Wings of Change. Student presentations will take place during the school
day on November 14, 2019. Additionally, we will host, in conjunction with Ian, a workshop for the community at
6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at NMHS.
The mission of the New Milford Public Schools, a collaborative partnership of students, educators,
family and community, is to prepare each and every student to compete and excel in an ever-
changing world, embrace challenges with vigor, respect and appreciate the worth of every human
being, and contribute to society by providing effective instruction and dynamic curriculum, offering a
wide range of valuable experiences, and inspiring students to pursue their dreams and aspirations.
We hope that as a member of this collaborative partnership that you will be able to join us for the workshop on
November 14th at 6:30 p.m. as we begin shifting our work relative to school climate and social-emotional learning to
better meet the evolving needs of our school and local/global communities.
Sincerely,
