Unit 1: What kind of person are you?

1. Building Vocabulary: Descriptive adjectives

2. Reading Skill: Indentifing topics and main ideas
Every paragraph has a topic and a main idea.
The Topic Usually, you can say the topic in one or two words. To identify
the topic, ask this question: What is this paragraph about?
In this paragraph, the topic is “my sister.”The topic repeats in the
paragraph.
My sister, Hoa, is very popular. Everyone likes her. Why? For one thing, she is
very outgoing. She laughs a lot, and she tells jokes. She makes peole happy. For
these reasons, my sister has a lot of friends.

The main idea Usually, you can say the main idea in a short sentence. To
identify the main idea, ask this question: What is the most important idea in
this paragraph?

In the paragraph above, the main idea is “My sister, Hoa, is very
popular.” The other sentences in the paragraph explain this idea.

3. Grammar: Present of be; Simple present affirmative statements


Notes: Statements with be can be followed by nouns (a student), adjectives (tall),
or prepositional phrases (from Vietnam)

Unit 2: Who are your friends?

Photographs and art can help you understand an article. When you preview an article,
look carefully at the photographs and art.

1. Building Vocabulary: Word families


Word families are groups of similar words. Word families include nouns, verbs,
and adjectives. When you learn one word in the family, it is easy to learn other
words in the family.
Help (n) ---- help (v) ---- helpful (adj)
Friend (n) ---- ----- friendly (adj)
When you learn a new word, learn the part of speech. Is it a noun, adjective, or
verb?

3. Writing Skill: Editing for capitalization and punctuation
After you write, edit for correct capitalization and punctuation.
Capitalization Rules
Capitalize the first word in a statement or a question.
Capitalize proper nouns: the names of people, places, or things.
Capitalize the days of week and the months of the year.
Punctuation Rules
End every sentence with a period (.).
End evey question with a question mark (?).
4. Write: Write sentences to describe three friends.
Brainstorm: Follow these steps
In your notebook, draw three idea maps like the one below. Write the name of one
of your friends in each of the center circles.
