I’m writing this letter in confident support of Megan Ross as a future educator in your school district. I’ve
had the pleasure of being one of Megan’s mentors during her student teaching internship at Troy High
School in the Troy School District, and she has impressed me since the very beginning.
As you are well aware, the 2020-2021 school year was extremely challenging for educators. Megan
jumped in with both feet from the very start. As I approached the school year with trepidation, Megan
approached it with excitement and positivity. Megan used technology to connect with students in a
variety of teaching models this year. From completely virtual to hybrid, from A days to B days, from
synchronous to asynchronous, Megan was flexible, calm, and aware of students’ needs.
Megan is acutely aware of students’ linguistic diversity. I’m the English Language Development (ELD)
Specialist at Troy High School, and Megan taught my Intermediate/Beginner ELD course. The students
in this class represent a wide range of linguistic abilities, cultures, and academic experiences. Through
teaching this class, Megan was able to scaffold her lesson plans to reach all students. When Megan first
took over teaching duties, a newcomer student had just entered our virtual Intermediate/Beginner ELD
class. He had never taken English courses in his home country, and he had very little experience with
using technology. Megan approached him with patience, kindness, and understanding. She tried her
best to speak to him in his home language or translate for him so that he could participate along with his
peers. Megan accommodated her lessons for him so that he had his own tasks, directions, and rubrics
that were appropriate for his level. She organized her lessons so that she could go into a breakout room
with him on Zoom to reexplain tasks in a way that he could understand. Megan’s naturally caring nature
along with her ability to plan lessons for all types of students make her an excellent educator.
Megan focuses on the importance of students’ cultural diversity. Something that really impressed me
was how Megan acknowledged each student’s home country’s culture while helping them become
comfortable in the US. On Election Day in November, Megan had the idea to teach a mini lesson about
the importance of this day in the US. She gave students time to research about how leaders are chosen
in their home countries and share this part of their culture with the class. She listened and asked
students questions so that they each felt like their knowledge was valued. Megan knows that it’s
important to lift up our students’ voices so that they feel supported, heard, and important.
Megan’s confidence in planning, organization, and professional communication are extremely well-
developed for a new teacher. From the very beginning of her internship, she shared her thoughts with
confidence. She never seemed nervous or intimidated to work with experienced colleagues, even at the
district level. She independently communicated with our ELD Curriculum and Instruction Specialist to
invite her into our classroom when students were sharing projects at the end of a unit. While some new
teachers might hesitate to invite other educators into their classroom, Megan seemed to view it as an
opportunity to showcase her students’ growth. She collaborated with me in planning mini lessons and
then took over planning all of the lessons for our class within just a couple of months. She continued to
collaborate with me when she had concerns or wanted someone to bounce ideas off of, but her initial
plans were always thoughtful, level-appropriate, and interactive even before she shared any ideas with
me. Megan was organized with student data, grading work on a weekly basis while giving students
I will miss Megan’s caring calmness when she finishes her internship year at Troy High, and I know her
students will miss her too. She has truly been a bright light in this turbulent year. Her future students and
colleagues will be very lucky to have her in their lives.
I highly recommend Megan Ross for employment as an educator in your school. She is positive,
professional, caring, and extremely aware of students’ diverse needs. I know that she will be an asset to
your staff and a mentor for your students.
