Hour: 2nd
1. What has the author revealed about this character? What are some words and phrases
that describe the protagonist’s physical appearance?
We don’t know her name yet, but she is poor as the author said, “she dressed plainly because
can’t afford nice things”. She is naturally good looking with her natural poise, mental
cleverness, good taste that she could easily pass as a higher-class woman. It is also revealed
that women have no family rank or social class.
2. Why do you think there is so much description for the woman and not her husband?
I think that the husband has such a small description because he is not the main character, but
the static character who doesn’t change much throughout the story.
What I know about the woman: What we know about the husband:
The women aren’t happy living so poorly The husband is happy with the small
with the same things. She also daydreams things, he says that there is nothing
often of having a fancy life better than a good stew
3. What is important to the main character? Make a prediction about what will happen
next.
It seems that it is important for her to be famous and important like her friend. next in the
story, I think that she is going to talk to her husband and ask him to buy her something (like this
sort of thing).
4. What motivates Madame Loisel to borrow jewelry from her friend rather than wear
flowers as her husband suggests?
I think she is excited to borrow jewelry from her friend because maybe she has been eyeing a
jewelry for so long and she can finally ask to borrow it. Or maybe it was because she knew her
friend was rich so she would have a lot of jewelry to pick from.
5. Why is Madame Loisel so happy at the gala? What brings her this joy?
She is so happy to be there at the party because this is just what she has been dreaming for her
entire life, the prettiest one, the one everyone wants to be with. A specific object that brings
her joy would be the necklace because she wasn’t just satisfied with the 400 francs dress, she
also wanted an accessory
6. From what point of view does the narrator tell this story? How does this point of view
affect the story?
a. First-person,
b. second person
c. third person limited
d. third-person omniscient
This POV affects the story in a good way because we also get to see how the husband/any other
characters in the same situation would be like. Like she is disappointed, but he is tired and has
work tomorrow.
7. What does the word catch mean in line 174?
a. A snag,
b. a fastening device
c. an unexpected problem
d. a husky/unclear voice
8. Does Madame Loisel’s behavior suggest that she is a dynamic or static character? Use
words or sentences from the text to explain your answer if needed.
She is a dynamic character because her attitude towards the problem changes and she is
determined to play her debt. In the text it says, “with sudden heroism” and also that she
“learned to do the heavy housework” and bargained with the food dealers so she could save up
every last bit of money to pay the debt. She also looked like a peasant women not caring who
saw her.
9. Do you think Monsieur Loisel is a static or dynamic character? Consider whether his core
character traits have changed as you explain your opinion.
No, I don’t think his character has changed because he is still a good man and is working hard to
pay off the debt. He is still a static character.
10. What do you think about the line “How little there is between happiness and misery!”
Do you agree or disagree, why or why not?
Yes, I agree with what Madame Loisel means by this because in that small moment when they
got in the cab, she had checked for her necklace or made sure her necklace was there the
whole time, she would not have been troubling herself or her husband.
Just in an instance, her whole life has changed.
11. What do you think motivated Madame Loisel to finally reveal the loss of the necklace to
her friend?
I think Madame Loisel finally wanted to reveal to her friend what happened because she felt
bad that she’s keeping a secret from her good friend. Also, Madame probably waited this long
so that her friend doesn’t call her a thief or get angry and since she paid of the debt, she is safe
to tell.
12. What has a greater impact on this story-the importance of status or the role of fate, or
chance?
I think that the importance of status has a greater impact on the story because if madame
Loisel wasn’t so poor and unhappy, she wouldn’t have had the desperation to borrow her
friend’s jewelry and face her fate. In the beginning of the story, she and her husband were fine,
but she could see that since she was blinded by her misery of not having fancier things, and at
end she sees what she has gotten herself into when her and her husband had to work for 10
years trying to clear their debt. A line from the book is, “How little there is between happiness
and misery!”. Just In the matter of a few hours her mindset and her fate had changed that
night. Another piece of evidence is that in the first paragraph, the author wrote how she is
naturally good looking with her natural poise, mental cleverness, good taste that she could
easily pass as a higher-class woman, and 10 years later, she became a heavy, rough, her skirts
askew like a peasant woman. Her friend, Madame Forestier who probably is the same age as
she, looks just as beautiful now like 10 years before.
13. At the beginning of the story, how are Madame Loisel and her husband different?
a. She is hardworking; he is lazy.
b. She is positive; he is negative
c. She is unhappy; he is satisfied
d. She is practical; he is impractical
14. The story’s point of view allows readers to know the thoughts and feelings of
a. The narrator
b. More than one character
c. None of the characters
d. All of the characters
