Making Up & Handling of Non-Mag Drill Collars

Most, if not all of SLB’s MWD & LWD tools are made out of Non Magnetic Material. Many stabilizers
that are supplied by SLB are non magnetic as well. The benefits include less magnetic drill string
interference. The negatives include occasional collar & thread damage.

Below are guidelines for better rig practices, to ensure NO DAMAGE to NON-MAGS .

1. All NMDC’s inc. tools should have thread protectors or lifting subs attached. If tools arrive
at the rig without protection, an RIR (Risk Identification Report) will be written by the SLB
engineer.

2. Tools should not be moved (including Picked Up & Laid Down) without protectors. This is the
responsibility of the SLB engineer and Drill crew. It should be the sole responsibility of the
SLB eng to provide such protectors; some of them are of a special/dedicated type.

3. If steel slings are used, the placement of which are important on some LWD tools. Consult an
SLB engineer first.

4. Placing the slips around some LWD tools also requires guidance of an SLB engineer to ensure
there is no sensor damage. SLB engineer to issue tool drawings which clearly shows the
driller where the slips can be set as well as information on whether auto slips (PS 30) can be
used, in addition to supervision of operation at ALL times.

5. Visually inspect threads prior to Making Up. (Do not wipe off dope as this also removes the
Rocol).

6. Use Kopr Kote pipe dope, supplied at the rig site. This protects the threads from galling.

7. Make Up NMDC’s with chain tongs. If the iron roughneck is to be used, ensure the spinning is
gradual and monitored. DO NOT CLAMP the upper spinners around the tool unless safe to do
so – ask the SLB engineer present. The Chain tongs should be the primary tool to be used
whenever making up connections, Iron Roughneck if not possible with chain tongs. Start
gradually to minimize the possibility of X-threading

8. Have the driller stab the connection in gently. DO NOT DROP the collar into place. NB The
threads will have to take the weight when spun in since the TDS rotating head is not designed
to be used for spinning in tubulars.

9. The correct TORQ will be specified by an SLB engineer, for each connection. Do not assume
they are all the same. DO NOT OVER TORQ.

10. Make sure that all threads are clean if, for instance, subs have been removed, and left to roll
around the pipedeck during battery handling.

Makeup of Non Mag Collars
– Information for Driller

Schlumberger use Non Magnetic material in many of their collars. We

need to be careful with this, and take the following precautions:

- Schlumberger connections arriving at the rig are ready

for make up – no need for doping on Rig Floor. Check for
any shipping damage.

- A Schlumberger (Drilling and Measurements) engineer

is to be present at all times on the rig floor during collar
handling.

- The engineer will give you the correct torque to use.

- If additional dope is required, use copper based dope if

available (Kopr-Kote). Do not wipe off the dope already
on the connection – this removes ROCOL treatment &
could cause galling.

- Start each thread manually using chain tongs where

possible.

- Use the spinner carefully at slow setting, and make sure

the placement is correct to avoid sensor damage.

- The key thing is: Be Gentle!
