No-one can doubt that e-books are here to stay. E-book sales have already overtaken sales of
paper books in the USA, and soon the rest of the world will follow. But what impact will this have on
the environment?

Optimists claim that e-books are environmentally friendly. Firstly, no paper is needed and therefore fewer
trees need to be cut down. (1) , as the carbon footprint of a paperback involves paper
production, printing, shipping and the destruction of at least 25% of books, which are never bought,
e-books must be greener. (2) , once you have an e-reader, you can download thousands
of books and read them on one device. (3) , the carbon footprint of an e-book will only
involve the initial purchase of the e-reader and battery charging.

(4) , pessimists only need to identify the mountains of obsolete computers filling
our landfill sites to set alarm bells ringing. How can e-books be more ecological, they argue, when we
consider what will happen as people upgrade, buying smaller and more powerful devices to read their
e-books on? Outdated e-readers will join the heaps of computers and multiply the carbon footprint of an
e-book well beyond that of a conventional paperback.

Proposal for Leaver's Dinner Menu

lntroduction

Chinese theme
This is an exotic and original option. Sorne of our students have eaten Chinese food, especially takeaways, and would
< enjoy the variety of dishes. However, other students may be reluctant to try it if they've never had it befare.

lndian feast
This is also an ethnic choice, which would be very popular with a great many students. The variety of meat and
vegetarían dishes is appealing. On the other hand, it may be too spicy for sorne of our students.

American alternative
Everyone leves burgers, chips, pizza and hotdogs. Having said that, this is a rather informal choice and not really
appropriate for a Leaver's 0inner. lt probably wouldn't feel special.

Mediterranean choice
You can't go wrong with simple chicken, fish, vegetable and pasta dishes. They are healthy, varied, delicious and
everyone leves them. Moreover, the majority of students are familiar with the food from this region.
