Other Problems
Q 1. Steam enters a turbine at a static pressure, a static temperature and a flow velocity of 60 bar,
550 oC and 200 m/s respectively. At the turbine exit, the static pressure, static temperature
and velocity are 7 bar, 300 oC and 250 m/s respectively. Heat transfer during expansion
process is neglected. Draw the T-s diagram of the process and calculate: (a) the total pressure
and total temperature at the inet, (b) the total pressure and total temperature at exit and (c)
total-to-total efficiency (d) total-to-static efficiency. Use steam tables for the calculations.
Q 2. Air flows through an air turbine where its stagnation pressure is decreased in the ratio 5:1. The
total-to-total efficiency is 0.8 and the air flow rate is 5kg/s. If the total power output is 405 kW,
find: (a) inlet total temperature, (b) actual exit total temperature, (c) actual exit static
temperature if the exit velocity is 100 m/s and (d) total-to-static efficiency of the device.
Q 3. An axial flow pump with a rotor diameter of 30 cm handles water at the rate of 2.7 m 3min
while operating at 1500 RPM. The corresponding energy input is 125 J/kg, the total-to-total
efficiency being 75%. If a second geometrically similar pump with a diameter of 20 cm
operates at 3000 rpm, what are its: (a) flow rate (b) change in total pressure and (c) input
power
Q 4. An axial flow turbine handling air operates with a total pressure ratio of 3:1 and an inlet total
temperature of 1000K. The impeller diameter and rotational speed are 30 cm and 16000 RPM,
while the total-to-total efficiency is 83%. Find the power output/(kg/s) of air flow, if the rotor
diameter is reduced to 20 cm and the rotational speed is 12000 RPM.
Q 5. A small scale model of a hydraulic turbine runs at a speed of 350 RPM under a head of 20m
and produces a power of 11.2 HP. Find (i) the unit discharge, the unit speed and the unit
power assuming a turbine total-to-total efficiency of 0.79 (ii) the power output of the actual
turbine which is twelve times the model size, assuming that the model and turbine efficiencies
are related by Moody’s formula, (iii) what type of turbine is this?
Moody’s equation is given as, η=1−( 1− ή ) ( D́ /D )
where,
 efficiency of prototype of diameter D
’ efficiency of model of diameter D’
Q 6. In a mixed flow turbomachine, the rotor speed is 4800 RPM. The radius at the inlet is 7.5 cm
and the exit radius is 15 cm. The fluid with a specific gravity of 0.81 enters the turbomachine
axially. The relative velocity at he exit is also axial and equals the axial velocity at the rotor
inlet in magnitude. Find: (a) the change in the total enthalpy from inlet to exit of rotor, (b)
power/(kg/s)of fluid flow, (c) the change in the total pressure, if the total-to-total efficiency of
the machine is 0.8.
Q 7. In an axial flow turbine, the flow exit angle of the stator and the relative flow angle of the
rotor is 20o. The velocity magnitude of the fluid at the exit of the stator blade is 1410 m/s. The
flow coefficient is 0.7 at the entry and 0.76 at the exit of the rotor blade. Find the inlet rotor
blade angle, power developed by the stage for a mass flowrate of 2.6 kg/s and degree of
reaction.
Q 8. The axial component of the air velocity at the exit of the nozzle of an axial flow reaction stage
is 180 m/s. Stator blade inlet angle is 27 o. Find the rotor blade inlet and exit angles if the
degree of reaction is 50% and the blade speed is 180 m/s.
