Discussion

A boy or a girl leaves his or her childhood stage when


he or she reaches the age of 10 or 11, wherein he or she
is now an adolescent—a young adult. Adolescence is the
period of psychological and social transition between
childhood and adulthood it starts either on an earlier or
later age. Many changes occur during this period. The
changes happening to adolescents are part of growing up.
It is important to know these changes that you might be
experiencing already. Being aware and knowledgeable of
the process of your growth and development will help you
understand yourself and others better.
As an adolescent grows, he or she experiences
changes in many ways but he or she seldom notices them
because they occur gradually. Changes like growing taller,
heavier and other physical body changes are observed.
Growth is also experienced in the way a person thinks
and learns. Thus, his or her mental ability is advancing.
An adolescent also grows socially and emotionally. He
or She might enjoy going out with friends and continue
making acquaintances. He or She prefers group activities.

THE MENSTRUAL PERIOD


Menstruation is girls' monthly bleeding. When
they menstruate, their bodies shed the lining of the
uterus (womb). Menstrual blood flows from the uterus
through the small opening in the cervix and passes
out of the body through the vagina.
Starting to have menstrual period is part of
growing up for girls. Menstrual periods usually start to
occur around the same time as other changes happen
to the girl's body, such as starting to develop breasts

menstrual period is 13, but it is normal to start at any
time between the ages of 11 and 15. A small number
of girls may start before or after this. Menstrual
period continues until menopause, which is usually
around the age of 50.
Menstrual Cycle
Ovaries are small organs found in the lower part
of the abdomen of females. They are positioned on
both sides of the womb (uterus). During the puberty
of girls, the ovaries start to produce female hormones
which cause changes to the lining of the uterus. Every
month during the period, the lining of the womb is
shed together with some blood.

Female Reproductive Organ

The length of the menstrual cycle is counted


from the start of one period and the start of the next.

The average length of a menstrual cycle is 28 days,


but anything between 24 and 35 days is normal.
During the cycle, various changes occur in the body.
These are caused by changing amounts of the female
hormones at different times of the cycle.

Common Menstrual Problems


The most common gynecologic issues that females
experience are menstrual problems. These problems may
manifest when a female is either not getting her period, or
is having periods too frequently or infrequently.
Unexpected or excessive menstrual bleeding and severe
pain during menstruation are also menstrual problems.
Below are four main categories of menstrual problems.
1. Amenorrhea — it is the lack of menstruation. It
happens when a female does not get her period by age
16, or when she stops getting her period for at least three
months and is not pregnant.
2. Oligomenorrhea — it is the infrequent occurrence of
menstrual periods, or having a period only occasionally.
Possible causes of this can include: Polycystic ovary
syndrome, premature ovarian failure, uterine disease,
disorders of the thyroid gland and pituitary gland or
hypothalamus, and other hormonal imbalances.
3. Abnormal uterine Bleeding (AUB) or
Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding- It is defined as either
excessive menstrual bleeding (also called menorrhagia), or
bleeding/spotting that occurs between periods or after
menopause. It also includes a condition known as
dysfunctional uterine bleeding, which is menstrual
bleeding that occurs more often than every 21 days or
farther apart than 35 days. It can also result in periods
that last longer than seven days.
4. Dysmenorrhea - It refers to painful periods, including
severe menstrual cramps. Dysmenorrhea may be
accompanied by other symptoms, including diarrhea,

nausea, vomiting, headache, or discomfort in the lower


back.

Health Habits during Menstrual Period


Menstruation is a normal function for all females
and should never be considered a sickness. Girls may
notice signs that their period is coming for a week or
two before it starts. Most of these signs go away soon
after each period begins. Some girls may feel the
signs of menstruation before they have it. They may
experience an abdominal pain, backache, or
headache; these can be relieved by simple exercises,
and observing good health habits.

1. Girls may be tired and need extra rest just before their
period. They might have headaches, too. They should
try to get enough sleep and take a nap if they need
one.
2. The breasts may swell and hurt. To ease discomfort,
these tips can help.
a)Hug a heating pad or soak in a warm bath.
b)Try cold packs.
c) Wear a firm bra that fits correctly when the breasts
are swollen.
d)Tell their mother or other elder women if their breasts
still hurt.
3. Girls may feel pain or cramps in their lower abdomen
and even in their lower back. This happens when the
muscles of the uterus tighten to help shed its lining.
They can soothe the pain in several ways.
a)Take a warm bath.
b)Hold a hot water bottle or heating pad over the cramp
zone.
c) Relax with gentle exercise, such as stretching.
d)Sip a warm drink.

e)Check with their mother or a doctor if cramps get in


the way of their normal life. There may be medicines
that can help them.
4. It is a good idea to keep track of the menstrual periods.
Girls may use a calendar, diary, or journal. Mark the
day when the period starts and the days they have
flow. Over time, their cycle should become more even.
By keeping track, they can watch their own pattern
appear. Then they will know when to expect their next
period.
a)Drink 8—12 glasses of water a day to avoid
constipation which causes menstrual discomfort.
b)Eat a well-balanced diet. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and
vegetables.
c) Avoid tiring oneself too much.
d)Get enough exercise. Exercise more than anything,
helps prevent painful menstruation or dysmenorrhea.

Menstrual Hygiene
Proper hygiene is very important during menstrual
period. It is important to keep the body clean during the
period to avoid any offensive odor. To prevent this, one
should take a bath daily. If this is not possible, wash the
genitals frequently with soap or feminine wash and
change the pads every three or four hours to prevent
unpleasant odor, stains on the clothes, and possible
vaginal infection. Used napkins should be wrapped
carefully before throwing it in the garbage can. Do not
flush pads down the toilet. They will clog it. Wrap them in
toilet paper and put them in the trash can.

Menstruation Myths and Facts


Myth 1: A girl will become crazy if she takes a bath
during her menstrual period.
Fact: Taking a bath will actually make her feel fresh
and more comfortable.

Myth 2: Taking a bath or when in swimming pool causes


the menstruation to stop.
Fact: While taking a bath or when swimming,
menstruation may stop temporarily.
Myth 3: It is advisable for a first timer to jump from the
third step of the stairs so that her period will only last for
three days.
Fact: Just like the menstrual flow, duration of menses is
affected by the following factors: hormones, nutrition,
stress, diseases of the female reproduction areas, and
others.
Myth 4: Drinking carbonated drinks or drinks containing
caffeine or alcohol will increase menstrual flow.
Fact: This is partially true. Caffeine may cause increase in
blood flow similar to that of alcoholic beverages in
general, but it does not necessarily mean that menstrual
flow will increase.

CIRCUMCISION
Some men have a foreskin that covers the head of
the penis. Many of them have had this skin removed
through a procedure called circumcision. According to
medical experts, boys are to be circumcised when they
reach the age of 12-14, however, some parents have their
sons circumcised after birth. Circumcision does not affect
the function of the penis at all, only its appearance.
Proper Care after Circumcision
After circumcision, proper care is necessary to hasten
the healing of the wound and to avoid infection. The
following health habits should be observed.
1. Boys should avoid vigorous exercises until the wound
heals.
2. If bleeding occurs during the first 24 hours after
surgery, use a clean cloth to apply pressure on the
wound for 10 minutes.

3. Place an ice pack on the area (20 minutes on, 20


minutes off) for the first 24 hours after surgery. This
helps reduce swelling and pain.
4. Bathing or showering is allowed most of the time.
The surgical cut may be gently washed with mild,
unscented soap.
5. Change the dressing at least once a day and apply an
antibiotic Ointment. If the dressing gets wet, change
it promptly.
6. Use prescribed pain medicine as directed. Pain
medicines should be taken
7. Use clean, loose clothing to avoid irritation and to
allow the passage of air and induce healing.
8. Change underwear every day.
9. Avoid touching the wound with bare hands.
10. Wash and clean the wound regularly until it is
completely healed.
11. Eat a balanced diet.
12. Healing may take up to three weeks.

Call a doctor or surgeon if:


1. new bleeding occurs,
2. pus drains from the area of the surgical cut,
3. pain becomes severe or lasts for longer than
expected, and
4. The entire penis looks red and swollen.

PERSONAL CARE AND HYGIENE


There are different tools needed to keep a person
neat and clean. These are called grooming tools. They
are things used to make a person good looking. It is
necessary for everyone, especially adolescents, to have
their own set of grooming tools.

Things to Use for the Hair

Here are the things usually used to groom the hair. It


is recommended not to share your hair grooming
implements such as comb, brush, and clips with others,
for hygienic reason.

1. Comb — this is an instrument


with a row of long, thin teeth used to groom the hair.

2. Hair brush — this is commonly used


to remove dust and dirt. It is also used to stimulate
the scalp and oil in the hair.

3. Hair clip — this is used as an


ornament for the hair and to keep it in place.

4. Shampoo — this is commonly used


to clean the hair and scalp. It removes dust and dirt
in the hair.

5. Conditioner - This is a liquid or


cream applied to the hair while or after using
shampoo, usually while the hair is still wet, to make it
more manageable and healthy.

Things to Use when Taking a Bath


These things are used when taking a bath. Use soap
to clean the body and towel dry. Apply powder after
taking a bath and use deodorant for the underarms.

1. Bath soap — This is used for


keeping the body clean. It is also recommended to
use germicidal/ antibacterial soap to prevent germs
from entering the body.

2. Towel - This is usually a


rectangular piece of absorbent cloth that is used to
dry the body. Always use a personal towel which is
not for sharing to keep the body free from infections.

3. Talcum powder — This is a fine


powder, often scented, that is applied in the skin to
deodorize and absorb moisture.

4. Deodorant — this is used for preventing


body odor. It is usually used after bathing.

These things are used to clean the nails.

1. Nail clippers - This is a small tool used


for trimming fingernails and toenails.

2. Nail file- This is used to shape and


smoothen

clean the nails.

Things to Use for the Teeth and Gums

1. Toothbrush - This is a small brush with


a long handle and head used for cleaning the teeth.
The bristles of the toothbrush massage the gums and
help in blood circulation.

2. Toothpaste- This is a paste brushed


on the teeth to clean and protect them from tooth
decay.

3. Dental floss - This is a thread that is


used to remove food and plaque in between the teeth.

4. Mouthwash -This is a specialized liquid


that is gargled in the mouth to cleanse it and freshen
breath.

Proper Way of Cleaning the Body

1. Taking a bath regularly — taking a bath


is the most important part of everyone's life. To look
clean and fresh, do not leave this habit. Taking a bath
is like a ceremonial activity done every day. This activity
is needed to keep the body clean and to always smell
good.

2. Brushing the teeth — Having a bad breath


and food particles left in between the teeth makes a
person look dirty. Do not use whitening toothpaste
when having braces. Be sure to brush after breakfast,
after lunch, and before going to sleep. Also, be sure to
floss every day and use a bacteria-killing mouthwash.

3. Keeping the hair clean — This means


wash the hair frequently. Washing the hair every day 1,
is not necessary, but wash it at least every other day.
Another thing is to keep the hair always neat. Any
hairstyle used should look neat and tidy at all times.

4. Keeping the face clean — The face is the


part of the body most exposed to dust and dirt. It
should be washed often, preferably two or three times
a day to remove the dirt that clings to the surface.

5. Cleaning the ears — Ears need to be


cleaned regularly in order to prevent infections or
hearing loss due to excessive wax buildup.

the common cold to more serious conditions like
meningitis, hepatitis A, and infectious diarrhea.
