General Directions: Read the literary selection “Disaster Alert,” an editorial, and then do the activities that follow.

1. The text is calling attention to flooding cited as a global concern/problem.
2. Paragraphs 1-3 are devoted to the problem faced by Thailand and Philippines.
3. Paragraphs 4-5 are devoted to measures to address the problem. The two countries singled out in these
paragraphs are Singapore and Thailand. Highlighted preventive measures include long-term water
management measures particularly building channels that divert water away from residential and
industrial enclaves to the certain agricultural lands, as well as the need for a review of the protocols
for releasing water from dams so that releases can be done in smaller increments to reduce the risk of
flooding.
4. In paragraph 4, there mentioned the editor’s suggestion regarding what might be done about the problem.
This suggestion is particularly addressed to “water czars”. In addition to the suggestions emphasized in the
text, reforestation is also explicitly suggested in the editorial cartoon.
