Material Balances
1. Convert 23 lbm.ft/min2 to its equivalent in kg.cm/s2. (Shanice)
2. A 0.50-molar solution of sulfuric acid flows into a process unit at a rate of 1.25 m3/min.
The specific gravity of the solution is 1.03. Calculate:
a. The mass concentration of H2SO4 in kg/m3
b. The mass flow rate of H2SO4 in kg/s, and
c. The mass fraction of H2SO4. (Ricardo & Kiara)
3. Calculate the average molecular weight of a gaseous mixture with the following composition on
a mole % basis: CH4 = 30%; H2 = 10%; N2 = 60%. (Tashique)
4. Calculate the average molecular weight of air (a) from its approximate molar composition of
79% N2 and 21% O2 and separately form its approximate composition by mass of 76.7% N2,
23.3% O2. (Crishell)
5. A natural gas that is 100% CH4 is burned with oxygen enriched air to obtain a higher flame
temperature. The flue gas analyses as: CO2, 22%; O2, 4.4%; N2, 73.4%. Calculate the percent
of O2 and N2 in the oxygen enriched air. (Nicholoy & Leton)
6. Propane is burned completely with 20% excess air. Calculate the expected composition of the
stack gas on a dry basis. (Antoine)
7. Compressed propane has suggested as a source of economic power for motor vehicles. In a test
trial, 20 kg of C3H8 was burned with 400 kg of air to produce 44 kg of CO2 and 12 kg of CO.
Calculate the percent excess air used. (Javain & Renia)
8. 200kg of a KCl solution with a concentration of 12.5 g KCl/100g water was concentrated by
partial vaporization of water. The resulting KCl solution was transferred to a crystallizer
operating at 20 oC and the KCl crystals were separated from the mother liquor. The mass of
crystals obtained was 15 kg. The solubility of KCL at 20 oC is 34g KCl/100g water. Calculate
the mass of water evaporated. (Nadia &Glacion)
9. Wet copra consisting of 30% bone dry copra and 70% water is fed to a drier. 100kg of water are
removed during the process and the product has a water content of 40%. Calculate the quantity
of wet copra fed to the drier. Use both tie element & algebraic methods. (Michanie & Brittany)
10. Fresh orange juice containing 7 wt % solids is fed to an evaporator. After evaporation, the solids
content is 58 wt % solids. If 1000 kg/h orange juice is fed to the process, calculate the amounts
of concentrated juice produced and water evaporated. (Antonique &Rohandre)
11. In the continuous flow process below, streams 1, 2 and 3 are of unknown compositions and the
flow rates are also unknown. Calculate flow rates of streams 1, 2 and 3 and their compositions
in terms of components A and B. (Romane & Rushane)
