CHEM3403 – Material Balance Tutorial – 2 – 2021
1. Ethylene oxide is produced by oxidation of ethylene. 100 k mol of ethylene are fed to a
reactor and the product is found to contain 80 k mol of ethylene oxide and 10 k mol of
CO2. The reactions are:
C2H4 + ½ O2 C2H4O
C2H4 + 3O2 2CO2 + 2H2O
Calculate the:
(a) % conversion of ethylene
(b) The % yield of ethylene oxide (Lab Group 1)
2. Ethylene and oxygen are fed to a tubular reactor with silver catalyst to produce
ethylene oxide. This product is absorbed in water and converted to ethylene glycol
(CH2OH-CH2OH). If there is 90% conversion of ethylene to ethylene oxide and 65%
conversion of ethylene oxide to ethylene glycol, calculate the initial amount of ethylene
supplied to the reactor. (Lab Group 2)
3. In the manufacture of benzaldehyde, 100% excess dry air is fed along with
toluene to a reactor containing a catalyst. The reaction is represented as:
C6H5CH3 + O2 C6H5CHO + H2O
A side reaction also takes place:
C6H5CH3 + 9O2 7CO2 + 4H2O
If 13 % of the toluene supplied reacts and 0.5% of it reacts to form CO2 and H2O,
calculate the composition of the gas stream leaving the converter. (Lab Group 3)
4. Natural gas of unknown composition is burned with air. An analysis of the product gas
gives the following results:
0.130 mole H2O/mole flue gas
Orsat analysis of flue gas: 1.5% CO, 6.0% CO2, 8.2% O2 and 84.3% N2
Determine the ratio of hydrogen to Carbon in the gas. What is the likely formula of the
hydrocarbon gas? (Lab Group 4)
5. (a) The feed rate to a refinery distillation column consists of a mixture of propane, butane
and pentane in equal weights and is fed at a rate of 10,000 kg/hr. The overhead contains
90% propane, 7% butane and 3% pentane and is produced at a rate of 2800 kg/hr. A side
stream leaves the distillation tower at a rate of 3500 kg/hr and is fed to a holding tank
from which it is withdrawn at a constant rate. The side stream contains 20% propane,
70% butane and the rest pentane. Draw the process diagram and calculate the weight of
the bottoms stream and its composition. (Lab Group 5)

(b) If the holding tank is 3m in diameter and during a particular 1 hour run, the level rises
3m, at what rate is the side stream being drawn off? Assume the density of the side
stream to be 37.51 kg/m3. (Lab Group 6)
6. (a) The flow chart below represents a simple chemical process in which reactant A is
converted to B according to the equation: A B.
Use the data provided to determine the:
i. Overall conversion rate of A;
ii. The single pass conversion of A. (Lab Group 7)

7. Cyclohexane (C6H12) can be made by the reaction of benzene (C6H6) with H2 according
to the reaction:

C6H6 + 3H2 C6H12

The overall conversion of benzene is 95% and the single pass conversion is 20% as shown
in the figure below. If 20% excess hydrogen is supplied to the process in the fresh feed and
the recycle stream is 22.74 mol % benzene and 78.26 mol % hydrogen, determine:
i. the amount of hydrogen supplied to the process;
ii. the amount of benzene and hydrogen in the stream leaving the process, and
iii. the ratio of the recycle stream to the fresh feed stream. (Lab Groups 8&9)

Lab Group 10:

Present a simple material balance problem that illustrates use of ‘degree of freedom analysis’ in
determining a solution. Discuss the advantages of carrying out degree of freedom analysis.

Lab Group 11:

Summarize the essential aspects of Material Balance that one should review in reparation for
exams.

Lab Group 12
Prepare a comprehensive Table of Conversions for the various units. Exclude units that are rarely
used.
