LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET (Week 7)

Safety Practices in Outdoor Recreation

Background Information

First aid administration is a life-saving skill that requires training, this discussion will
provide basic information and guide, so one may know how to react and respond to certain
medical and emergency situations.

If facilities are cared for and used well, they will have a longer shelf life. Others will be
able to benefit from their use. Conducting proper etiquette in the use of facilities also ensures
the safety of those who use them. The risks in using them are minimized.

Learning Competency

Observes personal safety protocol to avoid dehydration, overexertion, hypo- and

hyperthermia during MVPA participation
Demonstrates proper etiquette and safety in the use of facilities and equipment
What-to-do in emergency situation
Panic is the worst enemy of any emergency situation. It even makes a bad situation
worse, as this spreads to others as well. So, the first thing to do in an emergency situation is to
stay calm. Then, try to remember and apply the DRSABC action plan or flow that is described
as follows:

• Danger- always check first the danger and source of injury. Make sure the
surroundings are safe and out of danger, otherwise, you will also allow
D yourself to be a victim.

• Responsiveness- can the casualty hear your voice? Can they open and close
R their eyes? Are there any movements? Do they respond to touch?

• Send- send for help or shout for help.

S

• Airway- is the person's airway clear? If the person is not responding and is
unconscious, check airway by opening the mouth and having a look inside.
A Tilting the head back with the chin facing up will clear an airway.

• Breathing- make sure that the victim is breathing by looking at breathing

B signs, listening to exhales, and feeling air coming out of the mouth or nose.

• CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)- if an adult is unconscious, no

pulse and not breathing, perform the CPR until the emergency personnel or
C medics arrive.

Activity 1: Administering First Aid

Directions: Read and analyze the scenario below. Answer the questions then write it on a
separate sheet of paper.

a. What is the first thing that you should do?
b. List everything you think you would need to do as the first persons to arrive at the
scene.
Characteristics of a Good First Aider
1. Gentle- first aider should not cause, inflict pain as much as possible
2. Resourceful- makes the best use of things at hand
3. Observant- should notice all signs, aware of what is happening and what may happen.
4. Tactful- handling the victim with utmost care and in a calm manner.
5. Emphatic- should be comforting.
6. Respectable- maintains a professional and caring attitude.

Activity 2: First Aid Skills

Directions: Read and analyze the statement below. Answer the questions then write it on a
separate sheet of paper.
If you will be administering first aid, what skills should you possess? Think of three
important skills and expound your answer.

Safety and Etiquette Outdoors

There are a few common practices that apply to all outdoor areas and activities.
Following these rules helps ensure that everyone using an area will have a good time and that
the area will be preserved for others to enjoy. It’s also a good idea to learn the etiquette specific
to your sport and the rules for the organization maintaining a site as they may vary from place
to place.

Practice good hygiene and minimum health standards at all times.

Keep it up and God bless always.

1. Use common sense. Don’t go out alone and be considerate of others using the space. Learn
the specific safety and etiquette guidelines for your sport.
2. Let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to be back. Sign in on the
trailhead register, and carry ID.
3. Plan ahead. Check maps and trail guides. Don’t rely on a GPS or your cell phone–bring a
map and compass. Bring a whistle, a first aid kit, and matches or a lighter. Bring a headlamp
or flashlight in case you are out longer than expected.
4. Tick prevention. The Thangamani Lab at Upstate Medical University recommends frequent
tick checks, wearing light colored clothing to easily detect ticks, tucking your pants into your
socks, wearing long sleeves, and to use EPA-registered insect repellents and clothing treated
with permethrin.
5. Stay on the trail. Most trails are marked with signs, paint blazes on trees, etc. Keep off
private property.
6. Dress properly. Wear appropriate shoes. Dress in quick-drying layers that can be swapped
out. Dress kids in bright colors. Ensure everyone brings a waterproof layer such as a rain jacket.
7. Follow the rules of the area. Don’t start fires or set up campgrounds if it isn’t permitted.
8. When relieving yourself, be sure to do so 200 feet away from trails and any water sources.
9. Motorized vehicles are only allowed on roadways and in designated parking areas unless
otherwise marked.
10. Bring plenty of water and food. Don’t drink from bodies of water unless you have a
method of purifying the water.
11. Pack out what you bring in. Never leave garbage behind and attempt to “leave no trace”
that you were there – leave things where you found them.
12. Learn to identify and avoid poisonous plants. In our area of New York State, it is possible
to come across poison oak, poison ivy, poison sumac, wild parsnip, and giant hogweed. Skin
contact with these plants can cause very painful or itchy rashes so do not touch them. If you
find giant hogweed, report it to the DEC.
13. Be aware of your surroundings including hazards such as hanging trees or branches,
cliffs, steep slopes, loose or slippery rocks, and rapid currents or waterfalls.
14. If you get lost, stay in one place, and stay warm and dry. Draw attention with bright colored
clothing, a flashlight, or your whistle.
15. When out with a dog, make sure your pet is wearing an ID collar. Always pick up after
your dog and observe leash rules. Do not allow your dog to chase wildlife or intimidate other
visitors.
16. Don’t feed the wildlife. Wild animals may seem tame and safe, but it’s better for them and
other visitors if humans do not feed them.
17. Speak quietly and turn your cell phone down, if not off.
18. Move to the side to take breaks, allowing others to pass.
19. Alway check yourself, children, and dogs for ticks when leaving the woods. Wear a hat,
long sleeves, and pants, and tuck pants into socks in areas where ticks are a big problem.
20. Remember sunscreen and bug spray.

Practice good hygiene and minimum health standards at all times.

Keep it up and God bless always.
